Can someone (or has someone) contact(ed) Michigan?
-
Did Michigan send out offers? I don't remember seeing that on the board.
-
I wonder if that extra 10k is the reason why you're the only one who has heard from CUNY so far.
-
There are PhD programs that make 30k?!? I make about half that and it's not like I live somewhere cheap (my rent is about 1100 per month). Oh and I'll add that I was accepted to 5 PhD programs last time around and none of them offered 30k (even one in NYC). Maybe programs have gotten wealthier in the last couple of years.
-
I'm guessing they have two left to send: one for me and one for you! They're just taking a while because they want to get the wording just right.

As time goes on, it really looks like I'm going to get shut out this year. It just sucks because I'm already in a damn PhD program. I could keep living my dream if this wasn't such a miserable place to be. I just wish I chose a different school the last time I did this...

For UT-Austin, maybe I'm just not looking at the right thing but under status for me it says "In review." Am I looking in the right place? Ah limbo...
-
I think I remember seeing an NYU waitlist. Anyone want to claim it?
-
Farewell Notre Dame. 9 more schools left to hear from (though 2 have already sent out acceptances and waitlists).
-
Congrats to all the NYU acceptances! You've won!

I had a rough time at undergrad for my first two years and ended up dropping out. I went on to get my MA from a Leiter department and am now in a PhD program in a Leiter department (of course now I'm striking out big time trying to get into a different department). I'm only saying this to point out that it is possible to overcome bad semesters and still end up in graduate school.
-
Thanks for doing this but UGH! The torture!
-
My vent for the day: Come on CUNY!!!!! Start calling more people aka me!
-
Ah! Congrats! I'm anxiously staring at my phone hoping to join you.
-
No I applied to regular old Philosophy.
-
I'm hoping for Toronto and Notre Dame.

That's definitely the kind of thing to ask departments about. They'll usually be forthcoming with that information. I'll add another question to consider: are the students that get placed under a particular advisor (or advisors) or is everyone generally successful?
-
I just got my rejection from them too. Like you, it was expected for me (given that the waitlists and acceptances went out). There's still hope for us at other schools!

I'll depart from the themes of this thread. Ruth Millikan is kind of my hero. I love Language, Thought, and Other Biological Categories. For an even clearer view of her theories, I recommend Language: A Biological Model. I used to do a lot of work on Millikan and I genuinely miss it. I think I'll return to that soon.

Yeah I keep checking my phone in hopes that Notre Dame's Philosophy admissions info comes out. Oh the waiting!
-
Waitlisted at WashU! That's 3 waitlists for me! Now if only I could turn some of those into acceptances...

I've already shared this advice in personal correspondence with people from the board, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. Don't make the same mistake I did and go to a program you hate! Here's a couple of ways to use your visit time to make sure the program is right for you. First, make sure the professors are the same on paper as they are in person. What do I mean? Well, although they may have published extensively in area X, they may no longer have an interest in it and don't want to take on any students who work on it. They may not give you a straightforward answer if you ask them about this (at least they didn't with me). You can also inquire about what that prof's students are researching and use this to gauge what your research may end up looking like. Second, again regarding professors, how do they relate to the students? Are they controlling or do they let their students formulate their own ideas? You can tell this at least partially based on how closely the students' research matches the professor. If every student is basically a clone of the professors without making much in the way of original contributions, that's probably a red flag. Third, note how the students socialize. Do they segregate based on interests? Do they seem uninterested in work that doesn't relate to their own (not that they have to be over the moon for other work but they should still at least respect it)? Do they make disparaging remarks about their colleagues? Fourth, I know diversity isn't a huge deal to everyone but the lack of it (and the lack of willingness to do anything about it) can be a red flag for some of us. Ask if they have a MAP chapter. If so, ask them what sorts of activities they do. If not, ask about starting one and gauge their reaction (a negative reaction to that could be a bad sign). That's all that I can think of for now. Those are the things I wish I had known about my department before joining.
