  1. Oxford: bigger cohorts, but about half the pricetag for an overseas student trying to attend (and paying full fees) as compared to Cambridge.
  2. I have offers to both for PhD study, both with the supervisors I've wanted to work with. The biggest issue for me to make the choice right now between the UK, US, and another overseas university is all about money. You have to pay tuition (~ 19k pounds/year for overseas students) and some other fees as well. UK schools do make offers to a lot of students each year but only very few get scholarships, and it's these people who go -- generally speaking, one would feel a little uncomfortable being the only person in a department who isn't getting any funding because that could potentially negatively affect job prospects. Re. other differences: less teaching requirements, little to no coursework, and much LESS politicised than the US universities.
  3. My three options are on three different continents and there are a LOT of factors, some qualitative and some quantitative, that I am still trying to wrap my head around. I've got some chats with current students set up but I think at this point it's going to be up to how I click with the POIs when we meet in person. Most of these are all happy problems, of course, but they are going to decide THE REST OF MY LIFE!
  4. Hi! I'm a Republican China person. I got the acceptance last week and an email from my POI today. From what I know they're taking up to 4 people for China/Japan/Korea.
  5. At the interview they told me they're taking 10, spread out across all the geographical focuses. It might still be early, but it might also be because not everyone is lurking around on GradCafe like we are...! The DGS also said that the formal email with the $$ package is coming in a few days. So I guess we should expect to see some more news then.
  6. Still just says "submitted" on ApplyWeb. Same thing for my other application that I got rejected for last week.
  7. What do you mean by application status? And all the best! fingers crossed for you
  8. Just received a very happy email from the Penn DGS! Fellowship/stipend for 5 years and summer travel support. Really exciting news after being rejected by Princeton last week. Are there... any other potential members of the cohort around here?
  9. Hello all! Thought I'd stop lurking and join in. Did an interview with Penn yesterday over Skype and I was a bit taken aback about how formal it was. They wanted to know very very deep details about my proposed research and current research (I'm currently finishing up a research masters with a hefty thesis and plenty of archival work) that felt a bit more like an oral defence than anything else. Overall I don't think it went badly, but I was surprised. Has anyone else had similar experiences with REALLY FORMAL interviews?
