Canadian Political Science Programs- Fall 2017 cycle
somuchtoread replied to somuchtoread's topic in Political Science Forum
That's awesome!!! Mine is IR too. UBC is my first choice for personal and family reasons but the two people who could supervise my research weren't taking on new students when I inquired before the application cycle. I wasn't too confident of my chances but I sent in my application anyway. Hoping for some kind of a miracle...haha..fingers crossed! -

I know!!! Definitely the most generous out of the other ones! I wasn't expecting it to be that much but it's great for prospective students I guess. -

I haven't contacted UBC so thanks for getting in touch with them and U of T as well. I'm waiting to hear from both of them too! Fingers crossed. -
I have just been accepted to McGill's PhD program and although I'm still waiting on other offers, I'm quite certain that I will end up in McGill. Looking into renting options etc. Where do people ususally look? Craigslist? Kijiji? Thanks

So sorry to hear Don't lose heart though. There are lots of excellent programs you're waiting to hear from. Sometimes it's just about that "fit" and you never know which program you might be a great candidate for. Sending lots of good wishes you way! -

Thank you! Looking forward to having all offers/rejections in so that I can make a decision. Status still says "under review" on the portal but I got an e-mail yesterday saying the application was successful and they'll send the official letter soon. -

Just received an offer from McGill!! Really excited because my research interests are an excellent fit with the department and overall Montreal would be a great place to live in but I still slightly prefer UBC for family reasons and U of Toronto for the university and department strenght. Aaaaaaghhhh!! So many decisions to make!! -

Exactly what _Dreamer_ said below. The Canadian system isn't all that different. Some of the scholarships require Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency but other than that it's pretty much the same. I'm waiting to hear back from UBC as well. Just got accepted into the University of Calgary program yesterday. -

I don't know faculty in poli sci since my degrees were in other disciplines so I'm afraid I can't comment of Dr. de Rooji. Definitely don't think a degree from SFU will disadvantage you in any way in future. If you maintain a good academic record, get SSHRC, have good references and manage to present at conferences and/or publish, you could be a great candidate at the top schools. For funding, Cambridge offers the Gates scholarship and you also have the Rhodes and Commonwealth scholarships if you meet the eligibility requirements. -

SFU is a decent school. Considering it's a young university, it has persistently been ranked as the best comprehensive university in Canada. I think in the years to come it will definitely be counted in the top league, at least in Canada. SOAS is a different world altogether though. I had a chance to visit SOAS last summer and just roaming around campus was an amazing experience. Plus the added benefit of being in London and the exposure that comes with that. As a campus it is much smaller but at a global level you can feel the impact in terms of its research quality. I focus on South Asia and there are many renowned scholars in my field who studied at SOAS. It's a shame that schools in England have poor funding at graduate level. -

I know! I had to write the GRE only for McGill. it's actually $250 to write the GRE and you're paying $50-$100 for test prep material...not to say the hours you have to put in to write the exam required by only one school. It was a frustrating process but McGill is one of my top choices so I went for it. Glad it's done. Waiting for the results now with a baited breath. -

Nice! Congratulations! I did my undergrad and my first MA from SFU. I see that you also have an offer from SOAS which is a great school! Do you have a preference between the two? -

Offers may depend on funding sometimes but don't worry. Canadian universities routinely admit international students and you haven an impressive profile. For what its worth, York isn't my first choice so if I get into my top 3, I will be giving up this offer. -

My topic bridges IR/Comparative. I just received an approval e-mail from the program director yesterday. Official offer to follow. I'm guessing they are only just beginning to roll out offers so hopefully you'll hear in the next few days as well. Good luck! -

Just got an acceptance from York. Waiting to hear back from the rest. -
Haven't seen a thread for the 2017 cycle so I thought I'd initiate one here. Anyone in the process of applying? I have just submitted my application to UBC and am currently working on ones for U of T, McGill, York, Calgary, Alberta and possibly Queens/Victoria. Here are my stats: Undergrad GPA: 3.6/4.33 (3.88 in last 2 years) MA (International Studies- Course Based): 3.55/4.33 MA (Political Science): 4.0/4.0 Scholarships: 5 in second MA (including SSHRC); 2 in first MA and and 3 in BA Other Awards: Rhodes Finalist, Dean's Honor Call, Best Poster Presentation Award Publications: Three published, one of them is single author; 3 submitted Conferences: Presented at two academic conferences Research: Worked as an RA in 2 semesters Enthusiastic reference letters I would appreciate any comments/evaluations? UBC is my first choice but the profs that work in my area aren't taking on PhD students so I'm not sure about what my chances are. Of course would be happy to have an offer from Toronto and McGill as well. Where is everyone else applying to?

Just got an e-mail about status-change this morning and got the offer when I checked! I have accepted it. Good luck to everyone else on the alternate list!! I thought I wasn't going to get it but it happened so there's definitely hope for everyone.

Thanks for the encouragement. Really hoping a definitive answer comes along soon because waiting until Jan 2017 seems too unbearable.
