Quite realistic. There are a much of apartment buildings. In my time here I've only stayed in the same one (which isn't a one bedroom) but my friend has an apartment he likes at Ivy Hall which is reasonable and right near campus.

I would not do this. Maybe for your program it makes sense if you're going to have an internship in the city for a lot of the time, but my friend does this now and while there are certainly more things to do in Philly than in Newark - you spend a lot of time in traffic.

This is all quite helpful. Newark craigslist seems a bit "dead" but perhaps some things might open up over the summer. What would you say is realistic for a one bedroom apartment? I've been looking around and have found some in the 1,110-1,200 range, but that seems stupidly high for Delaware.

  2. Looking for any advice on living in Newark! I'm moving in the fall and am hoping to find a one bedroom apartment in a relatively quiet area that's walkable (within 25 minutes) to campus. Is this realistic? I've been told that the majority of the students in my program commute from Philly, but that just seems insane to me. I have a friend who lives in Wilmington and am considering if I should just live with him and commute? If anyone has anyt thoughts about the area, I'd love to hear them!

I emailed them yesterday and was told that while they have sent out acceptances, all other notifications will go out after April 15th. I find this a tad unethical, as most schools require you to accept financial packages by that date. I just accepted an offer at another school, but was curious to hear back since it was the only program to which I applied that failed to send any form of notification.

I was first told the same thing by the department admin, but then I emailed Margaret Werth (Director of Graduate Studies) and she provided additional clarification and informed me that the admin was wrong.

  4. Does anyone have any news on Delaware? It seems one person was sent a rejection and that there were a few admits in February, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has heard anything. I contacted the department, and I was notified that I am on the waitlist. So, if you were accepted and aren't going, please let them (and me!) know. :)

  5. I think it also depends on your internship, study abroad, and professional experiences. I was in a similar boat as you, but I was able to get a stellar internship between my junior and senior year and then another right after graduating. I've worked 'in the field' now for two years, and took the time to build my resume after I completed my undergraduate degree in 2013. I applied this last cycle and received great offers for both PhD and Masters programs. I ultimately chose the terminal Masters, because I think it will be better for me in the long run, but I still intend to go for the PhD. It isn't all about your undergraduate institution - every one has unique experiences that will make them stand out for one reason or another. Now, I must add, I had some fabulous professors at my state school who are well known and respected in their field, and I'm sure that helped me in my application process.

Hey I see you decided on Williams (I think I know who you were from the admit visit). Congrats! I'm in off the waitlist and desperately trying to make my final decision.

Does anyone have any advice for Brown PhD vs. Wiliams MA?

    thaaaanks :)

I know exactly who you are from that Brown vs. Williams! What did you end up choosing?

  7. I was admitted and went to the open house as well. For the past few weeks, I have been waiting for them to figure out my aid package. If I'm not offered a full fellowship (or at least a tuition wavier), I won't be going to Williams even though it is my top choice at the moment. I'm wondering if this might be the holdup for other folks as well.

Hi all! I'm a longtime lurker and now emerging looking for help making my decision. @rococo_realism, what are your decision issues?

My problem is mainly taking an MA and hoping to improve my PhD prospects, versus taking one of the good PhD offers I have now.

This is my problem. I'm still waiting for my MA offers to come through with their funding packages. If it's terrible, then I'll just take the PhD offer that I have and run with it.

I would think long and hard about your professional goals and whether BU is going to be the best place for them. If the Williams offer is unfunded, then it's certainly more tempting to take the BU offer. I'm in a slightly different situation - I only applied to MA programs and was accepted and funded at Williams. All of the professors and museum professionals that I've spoken with about it have basically said that a degree from Williams is the gold standard, and that it will definitely help to open the door to the doctoral program of my choice. One former visiting professor at Williams told me that the year they were there, the program sent 3 students to Harvard and 2 to Yale, and there are currently at least 6 Columbia doctoral candidates who went through the program, or attended Williams as undergrads.

If you are happy going to BU and are happy with the job prospects that will bring, then go for it, but if your goal is HYP, then Williams would certainly help.

Thank you for the advice. I am currently on the wait list for a fellowship, but the director of the department said that he is optimistic that I will receive funding. So, we will see. I think I'm leaning this direction. I just needed some reassurance (and thanks to the folks how PM'd me) to help carry me this direction of the funding comes through.

I'm late to this conversation, I know, but I'm still waiting anxiously myself. I've got a lot on the line waiting for a decision (esp. summer fieldwork plans) and I don't know how much longer I can put these other plans off. Any advice (esp. with maybe reaching out to the faculty program coordinator and politely asking what's up?)

I sent an email yesterday to the graduate adviser just to ask what's up. I haven't heard back yet, but I can PM you if I hear something!

  11. Hi there! I lived in Dallas for a while and am familiar-ish with everything. Generally, if you stay north of I-30, you're good, unless you live in Oak Cliff which is a fun area. For your first year, you might want to try The Village. It's a huge area of tons of apartments that are mostly students. They aren't too expensive and it's in a safe area. My guess is it would be 20 minutes to commute during non-busy hours. You could also try Uptown (pretty expensive though), Oak Lawn, Knox-Henderson or Greenville. Those are all a little bit farther from you, but I don't really know of too many places in the neighborhood of where you will be. I also never had a problem with car theft (and don't know anyone who did?) and I lived 'on the edge' of sketchy neighborhood for a while. Feel free to PM me if you find a place or two and I can tell you about the area.

How can anyone look at this list and start a PhD program with plans to teach? Right now, your odds of getting a tenure-track job are effectively zero. Invest six to eight emotionally draining years of being exploited for cheap labor... your odds might scratch 20%, if you're in a top program. And there are students taking on mountains on debt for MAs (very, very cheap programs for schools to run, by the way) to improve their odds of getting into top PhD programs... so they can improve their odds to 20%. A 20% shot at a job you cannot possibly know you will enjoy.

But if you're reading this, you're probably the exception, not the rule.

I think it's also worth noting that there are many institutions that have hired new PhDs who were not included in the survey. My undergraduate institution added three tenure track jobs during the time period, hiring from UNC, Penn State, and Harvard. But because my institution was not included in the survey, these hires do not appear on this list. I think these numbers are deflated due to the sampling. The list also doesn't take into account curatorial positions in the field. So cheer up everyone! There's hope after all!

  13. @Tiners Congrats! I was admitted earlier this week to their Art History PhD program. BU is pretty high on my list and they offered me the Dean's Fellowship which includes a stipend for five years and a tuition waiver. I'm still waiting on three more schools before I make a decision too, but I'm excited about the prospect of living in Boston. One of my favorite cities!

Can anyone offer any insight into the job prospects for people graduating with a concentration in Northern Ren?  It seems there are a lot fewer of us compared with people working on modern/contemporary art.  Would you say that's an advantage or are there a lot more jobs for those concentrating on modern/contemporary? thanks

I would say it's pretty good, but probably not much different. When I was applying to schools, my mentors thought that I would have better luck getting in than someone who does 19th century - contemporary just because there are so many more people who want to study in those fields. So in applications, I would say Northern Ren has a better chance of getting in but probably equal job prospects?

  15. I am interested in the Early Modern Period and cultural exchange between republics (Venice, Dutch, etc.) and their more religious counterparts. It's pretty broad, but I wrote my undergraduate thesis on Venetian Church Architecture from 1480-1560 and changes that occurred in architecture, linking them to outside, protestant influences. I hope to focus more on 17th Century Dutch in graduate school.
