I'm in the same situation. I applied to a master's program, and I will go if I get funding (provided I don't get in to a PhD program.) If that doesn't work out, I will have to take a research job and will likely apply again next year after improving my stupid GRE score, if I am even physically able to do that .

I would consider propaganda of most kinds to be dangerous. However, it seems that modern cinema, especially in the US, is quite positive. I think this is further true for television. Actually, one of the reasons why I like TV so much is because I consider it a barometer for cultural ideas and opinions. This is especially true for taking the stigma off of gay relationships. When I watch Modern Family, for example, it makes me hope that people watch it and realize that gay parents are fully able to raise happy, healthy children. I imagine it's also helpful for gay teens who watch shows like Glee to realize that they are not alone. So, in short, I believe that cinema is more a force for good than bad.

Haha yeah I noticed that too but didn't say anything because I clearly am so lost in this application process.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I'm going to hold out for a little bit then email them.

As someone on the exact same waitlist as you, I say accept this other offer But in all seriousness I want to let you know that I emailed UMass and if you haven't heard yet, it means you aren't in the first round of acceptances. Also, if your perfect school is the one I am thinking of, then I grew up in the town right next to it so feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the location and the surrounding area. Especially if you like bargain shopping, I know all of the great places to go.

Glad to hear that Charlotte is nice. I applied to UNCC and emailed the DGS with some supplementary materials and she seems really nice. Things are looking really, really bad for me PhD-wise (with BU basically being my last hope excluding my Indiana WL) so hopefully I'll get in to UNCC and with some kind of financial aid that is not in loan form. I'm from Boston so I know firsthand that it's a great city to live in, especially for sociologists. If you do get in (and I hope you do, I hope we both do) then feel free to ask me any questions about the city.

Well, that doesn't sound too bad. From what I saw, UNCW looks like it does an excellent job training students for research positions. I didn't apply there because I was a pretty poor fit, but I would have otherwise. Also, you'll be in sunny NC!

My admittedly unresearched hypothesis would be that more people are simply going to college nowadays and therefore more are applying to grad school. But I'm sure other factors are at play. Maybe if I actually get into grad school this can be one of my sociological pet projects.

If you mean UMass Amherst, then I applied. When I found out that others got in, I emailed the grad director who informed me I did not make the first round but he would let me know in April if they would initiate a second round of acceptances. He was really nice, so if you want, I would suggest emailing him as well. Let me know how it turns out.

What's the story behind your avatar or username?

My username is a portmanteau; I will leave it up to the reader's imagination as to which two words compose it. -
Thanks for letting me know. Hope I get in. I like the program a lot!

Hello again everyone, I tried to stop myself from making this post, but alas, my willpower only held me afloat for so long. In any case, Indiana is probably my only chance at getting into a PhD program this year, though there is still some hope at a few other schools. Is anyone who is waitlisted/accepted surely not going? Or, if you do not care to divulge that information, does anyone know of anyone who has gotten off of this WL? No pressure on anyone, of course. I'm just wondering my chances. Thanks so much!

I hope to see you too! If I don't get in (which seems quite likely), I may may be doing a master's at UNCC or UNCG.

Wait-listed: Contact department or sit on your hands?
joops replied to hobokennojokin's topic in Waiting it Out
I don't think it's a bad idea to send a quite email as long as it's super polite. -
I too have heard only rejections (and one wait-list.) I'm not ready to give up the dream though, so I sent out an application to a master's program yesterday.

I emailed the DGS at one of my schools and got this: "Unfortunately you are not among our first round of acceptances. Sometimes we initiate a second round after people in the first round have made their decisions. You will hear from us in the first week of April if you're selected in the second round." Does this look like a wait list, or do you all think that this is a response to anyone who inquires? He was very cordial with me and replied in such a timely manner, I really didn't want to be pesky and ask for clarification. So, naturally, I came here to vent my nervousness!

Hey, at least you've got two acceptances under your belt already!

Has anyone heard back from UMASS?
joops replied to Poj's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Did you apply to UMass as an undergrad? If so, they may have sent an email to the one you used years ago instead of the one you gave them for your PhD application. It happened to me, but with a confirmation email. I don't think they have sent out acceptances for soc yet. -
So, as I was reading these boards the other day, I noticed that a number of people use chocolate as a coping mechanism. Later that day, I was talking to my mother, and she told me that the price of chocolate might rise. Personally, I prefer shopping for discount clothing as a vice, but I wanted to post on here to warn chocolate lovers that they might want to stock up now. Here is an article: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/WorldChocolateShortageAhead.aspx Good luck to everyone!

Send me my damn rejection so I can get on with my life.

I think their system is buggy. I'm getting the same page when I log in, but I managed to somehow direct myself to a page where it still tells me that my application is in review. I did email the gradsec over a week ago asking about my status and she has not responded. I'm going to refrain from criticizing because I cannot be entirely sure how long this process takes or what bureaucratic hoops departments have to go through to contact applicants. I do, however, wish this process were faster. -
Haha when I read this, a flood of emotions came over me. I'm also wait listed at Indiana and it seems likely that the only way I will be getting into a PhD program is off of that wait list. So when I read "I was tempted to leave my name on the list, hoping for an eventual acceptance (if only to boost my acceptance percentage)" I thought, "THE HORROR!" But then I read the last part and I must say I am very greatful for your act of kindness toward strangers. I hope everyone who gets into a school to which they do not plan on attending (especially at Indiana!) is as thoughtful as you. Best of luck in all of your endeavors.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question but I would like to wish you the best of luck.

Yes, the exact same situation happened to me. I'm betting worriestoomuch is right. Isn't it ironic, though, that someone who worries too much is on here calming other people down
