  1. Well, it's not until the very end and it's more of a weird wording error than a typo. The rest of the SOP is fine, so I'm thinking I should be okay. Good luck with Berkeley, have you heard back yet?
  2. Yikes. I just noticed a huge typo in an otherwise decent SOP to BU. Arrrrrrghhh. How did this happen? I read it over like a bajillion times!
  3. I do an impression of an old Jewish man named Shlomo who is from Long Island and has a Long Island accent. Recently I've started doing an impression of his wife, Ethel, who also has a thick LI accent. Sometimes I turn it into a little comedy sketch and make them talk to each other. I was crazy before I started the application process, but doing this impressions seems to keep me from going clinically insane. Also, it makes my co-workers laugh. As the wait grows longer and more tiresome (I have yet to receive an acceptance), Shlomo and Ethel's back story gets more detailed.
  4. Thanks for the update. I applied too. I hope we all get in and funded!
  5. Hey, thanks. yeah, I could use an extra shoulder right now.
  6. Thanks, Faculty. This makes me feel more confident about getting an MA first. Hopefully, I will get into a PhD program, but if not, I'm not going to give up.
  7. Are you waiting for an official rejection from UNC because you haven't heard anything from them, or did you get an email? I applied as well and haven't heard anything. I emailed the department sec today and I will be sure to let you know if she says anything about a second round of offers.
  8. Awww, thank you. And yes, there is hope. I really do like Indiana's program and I think I'm a great fit. I'm so sorry to hear about UT-Austin, I know how much you wanted to go there. I hope everything works out for you.Good luck!
  9. Rejected at Ohio State. Very sad.

Nowhere yet, and it's really stressing me out. Getting a PhD in sociology is all I want to do with the rest of my life. All I want is to get in SOMEWHERE, because I'd be happy to go to any of the places where I applied.
  11. Not to be a creeper, but you are so funny! I hope by some twist of fate we both end up at Indiana.
  12. Also, www.neopets.com I find it oddly soothing.
  13. Heh, yeah. I do quite like their program though. I emailed the grad sec and she just said that completed applications were ready for review by the committee, and that she didn't know when they'd meet.
  14. I was notified of my status on a wait list at 8:49am on a Saturday.
  15. My dad just send out a picture to me and a bunch of my relatives of my family wearing funny hats. Whenever someone replied, they would reply to all. I filtered those messages faster than you can say "I HATE FALSE ALARMS!"
  16. I email the graduate secretary at a school where two positive responses were given on the results page. She was quite polite about it and said that "The completed applications are now ready for the Committee to review. I do not have the dates as to when the Committee will be meeting." I'm wondering about the discrepancy, but as fall as I can tell, I'm still in the running. Thoughts?
  17. I can commiserate. I'm doing a year off right now and I feel like time has all but stopped. Also, I'm wait listed at one school and pessimistic about the others, so I am really in limbo until April 15th.
  18. Waitlisted at Indiana. Oy vey.
  19. Okay, will do. This should be an awkward email... "hi, your website says one thing but someone says something else...help?" In any case, thank you so much for your help.
  20. Thanks, SocCard. However, when I looked at their website it said that the deadline is November 15th. Do you have information to the contrary?
  21. I feel the exact same way! Have you heard anything from Georgia yet?
  22. Hello again everyone, As predicted in my last post, things are not looking good for me. Others have received acceptances from many of the places I applied, while I have heard nothing. I know it is still somewhat early, but I am going out of my mind and would feel better if I had a plan B. Can anyone suggest any masters programs with deadlines of around March 1st or later? Some very kind members here have suggested UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte, and Loiusville. I already plan to apply to UNC-Greensboro. I am an MA resident, so cost is obviously a factor, but at this point I will do whatever it takes to realize my dream of becoming a professor. About me: I have a BA in soc (3.71 cum, 3.92 major; 650V 490Q (yikes!) 4.5AW; 3 solid/excellent LORs; two internships; PBK; my writing sample is a qualitative analysis of Amish dialectology. I am interested in culture, social movements, and religion. Some members have warned me that if I get a masters, I will have to retake some courses at a PhD program. I am prepared to do this, and I thank these members for their advice. Am I correct in assuming that a masters will help me in gaining entrance to a PhD program? I would retake the GRE prior to applying for my doctorate. Thanks to all.

Do you have any research experience or internships? I applied to UNC as well but haven't heard anything yet, which is probably bad. I think it was my AWFUL quant score.
  24. Thank you! I'm giving myself until February 7, at which point if I do not have an acceptance I will kindly ask my reccomenders to submit their letters to MA programs, probably including the one you suggested. Thanks again!
  25. Not pathetic at all! Might I suggest filtering facebook messages/bank statements/whatever emails? You can have it so they are marked as read upon their arrival. This will minimize, though not totally diminish, the chances of false alarms.
