  1. I'll be starting at UC Davis (S-Wing) in September. Very excited! Went out to visit campus and check out housing in the area a couple of weeks ago, and my wife and I absolutely loved it. Is anyone else here going to UCD?
  2. I turned down an offer from Riverside last week, so if you were on a wait list, hopefully they've taken you into consideration now. It sounds like a great program, but I got a slightly better offer elsewhere. And I wouldn't jump to any conclusions if you still haven't heard from them. Like most academics I know, they can take several weeks to reply to emails. But the people I spoke with at UCR were extremely nice, which made it extra hard to turn down their offer.
  3. I just officially accepted my offer from the sociocultural wing of the anthropology department at UC Davis. I received the offer in January, but I had to wait for and weigh some other offers. To the member who was waitlisted and hoping for one of us to turn down the offer: sorry. Hopefully someone else makes room for you. If not, I'm sure you'll be in a great program somewhere. Good luck to everyone!
  4. I got my Penn rejection yesterday, too. I was really hoping for an Ivy League acceptance, but none worked out. I got into two ethno programs and an anthro program, and I'm leaning more toward the anthro degree because it seems like it could be better for job prospects in the long run. Still not Ivy League, but the program seems like a good fit, and one prof in particular that I am really excited about working with. @NightGallery, I'm in much the same boat as you are. Mid-30s, family to support, and an MA that I could probably leverage for a decent non-academic job (not Ivy League, but still). Nevertheless, I'm going for it. I know I won't be guaranteed a university position when it's all said and done (and that's part of the reason why I'm most likely going with anthro over ethno), but I have to go for this one last big attempt. I'm not saying you should give it another go, just trying to say I know it's a tough spot to be in.
  5. Got a rejection letter from Brown (ethno) this morning. Still waiting on Penn, but someone sent me a private message letting me know that Penn's visit week for musicology is this week or next. I'm guessing that means ethno, too, since they're all part of the Graduate Group in Music. I'm still holding onto a sliver of pretend hope, but I'm finally realizing I'm just not Ivy League material.
  6. Any word from Penn yet? I haven't heard a single thing from Penn or Brown, and it's getting pretty late in the game.
  7. Hello, all! I'm having some trouble deciding between two PhD programs. Both have offered me very similar funding, both are in great locations, both have faculty with whom I would be thrilled to work. I have weighed all the pros and cons, and it all comes down to one big difference: one is an anthropology program, and the other is ethnomusicology. My research interests can easily go in either direction, so I'm not really worried about which discipline is a better fit for what I hope to study for the next several years. The issue I'm struggling with is the long-term value of each degree: will I have more job opportunities and flexibility with one degree than I would with the other? Is this something that could change in 10 or 20 years? I know ethnomusicologists who teach anthro courses, and vice versa. I am currently co-teaching a "world music" course with an ethnomusicologist who got his PhD in anthro, but his undergrad degree was in music. There is a lot of comfortable overlap between the disciplines, and I plan to be a lifelong SEM and AAA member, but I guess I'm worried about appearances. When I start applying for teaching positions in a few years, which degree is going to look better? (Assume both universities and their faculty have equally good reputations.) Thanks!
  8. Still nothing from Brown or Penn? I'm considering writing to writing to my POI at each of these programs. I don't want to come across as that annoying, pushy applicant, but the clock is ticking. I've been accepted at UC Riverside, and if I'm going to spend a lot of money to fly across the country to visit UCR, it has to be next week (for several reasons). Is there a tactful way to ask, "What the E sharp is taking you so long?"
  9. Just received my rejection letter from Harvard (CSR - Americas) this morning. Not too surprised after all this waiting, but it was my top choice, so I'm saying lots of bad words on the inside. Best of luck to everyone else!
  10. Someone got into Brown's ethnomusicology program. I still haven't heard from Brown or Penn. Does anyone know anything?
  11. Just received generic rejection email from UT Austin, Butler School of Music. This was expected, as the division head had told me before I applied that they were only going to admit one PhD applicant, and it would most likely be someone from their MA program. Still waiting on Penn and Brown.
  12. That was my point exactly. None of this is consistent or makes any sense, so I'm not drawing the conclusion that no interview = no consideration. I've received 3 offers with no interviews at all. Not sharing any false info, just speculating based on the info I have. My near future hangs in the balance, so I think I'm justified in a little speculation.
  13. Thanks for your reply. I applied to CSR, RitA subfield. Still no notification, and I haven't seen anything in the Results Search except for one rejection on Feb 2.
  14. Ah, somebody said "last week" last week! This wait is excruciating. Anyway, I didn't get an interview, so I'm not optimistic. Then again, I may have read a post in this forum about Harvard not doing interviews. Any idea? You seem to have some inside info, theophany.
