That's great. Did you value the other recommender more, or are you happy with this one too?

See, you're even much more advanced than I am despite your impediment!

He actually reached out to me and offered. I should have asked him to begin with, but since he's not on my thesis committee, I didn't include him initially.

It's all good. Emailed can get lost or be confusing. I'll just try to go to their offices in person later on today. I have to TA today, so i'm bound to seem somebody haha.

I slept and i'm less worried now. Sometimes a lack of sleep (hey papers, i'm talking to you) leads to paranoia and and confusion. I'll just chug my coffee and pray it works out.

Gosh, I was obviously half asleep when I wrote this. *Emails and *see

    Anyways,

    thanks for the emotional support!

Good lord. I wish I could say or do something to help. Really, really sorry to hear about this. I think you have to get in their faces at this point. If they agreed to write for you, and they're not even giving you the common courtesy of responding to emails, maybe they have to see that you're a real, live human being, whose life is being drastically affected by their negligence. I know it's a busy time of year for everyone, but man, this stuff is life-contingent. They should be ashamed.

At this point, I'm going to ask for letters from other people. I don't want to burn bridges, because I will be taking courses with all of my recommenders this spring. I'm going to chat with the head of my department and see if he is willing to help me out. It will be super last minute, and I fear that it may make my other recommenders look bad. :/

I'll send another email tonight. :/

What's up? Are you still waiting for them to submit their LOR's?

I'm taking Columbia off my list. I need to concentrate on my finals, and I just don't have the right feeling with what I'm finding on their websites!

Yeah. I've actually had a few programs email to say that they're missing letters. I had another program give me a deadline for when LOR's should be submitted. Another program wanted all the LOR's in by the deadline and my LOR's didn't respond to numerous emails reminding them to pleeeaaassseee upload the letters because if they don't then my app would be thrown out. No response and no submission. I'm actually really upset. If i'm doing everything I need to do, why can't they upload the same letter a few times?

  5. For the vast majority of programs i'm applying to, i've read a good sized amount of work by POI. How would you determine fit if you don't read their work? I actually removed a school from my list because although the POI states that he's an Africanist (ad the school labels him as such), he is actually anti-africanist (all of his work argues against that categorization...yet he's labeled as one). Makes no darn sense. I wouldn't have realized that if I hadn't read his work.

So...if your final letter-writer starts uploading her letters, leading you to finally go out and buy all of your letter-writers wine...only to see that she stopped after four uploads...do you withhold the wine?

    Asking for a friend. ;)

Better yet, what can I buy my LOR's? What are good gift ideas? Besides wine lol

Dammit. This is really, really shitty. Do you have a potential backup LOR writer? Someone who you have a good rapport with whom you can turn to in a crisis? If there's anyone, then you can explain the situation. It's a very busy time of year, but you might find some legitimate sympathy. Writing letters for good students is literally part of their job. So long as you've been good to your LOR-writers, there's no good reason for them to not write for you in a timely fashion.

Really sorry about this, BR. :(

It's okay. I can't do anything about it. I'm just going to do relax. I had somebody email me an hour or so ago saying they would do it....the deadline has passed and it was a place that needed it in on time. I contacted the department and they said they wouldn't penalize me (especially since my application was submitted over a week ago).

I'm just going to chill and watch some netflix and eat a burger or something.

  8. I'm just here to chat instead of losing my mind over applications.Maybe I should post this in the chat section lol.

This season I heard people talk about looking for non-theory heavy departments. What in the world does that mean? How does one study literature without theory? Is that a thing? Wouldn't we just call that New Crit.? Are there people out there reading books without using theory? I think that i'm surprised only because I was taught to use theory starting in highschool and anything besides that doesn't exist in my mind anymore lol.

I'm just here to ramble. Ramble with me. Enlighten me. Let's just talk about the stuff we love and ignore the applications that are out right now :P:P:P

That's really weird. This seems to suggest that they pick out favorites before the 15 December deadline, which makes the deadline disingenuous. I can't think of another reason why a school would urge applications decently before the deadline is up.

I'm applying there and I did not receive this email.

Augh! I'm in the same boat! You have ALL of my commiseration!

I've sent several emails to one of my recommenders over the past few weeks, and she has been unresponsive. Worse still, I received an email from Northwestern asking about my lack of uploaded letters, since their deadline is tomorrow. Apparently Northwestern is one of the programs that doesn't give a lot of leeway to LORs being submitted after the deadline. It makes sense, given that they traditionally make their decisions in January, but it's a bit frustrating nonetheless (although Nathan Mead is one of the best graduate admin people out there, IMO -- always on the ball and pleasant to deal with). One of my three recommenders has now uploaded her letter, but it's been radio silence from the others. If they don't get their letters in this weekend, I can likely kiss Northwestern goodbye. :(

I could go on a mini-rant about having application deadlines at the busiest time of the academic year...but that's a post or thread for another day.

I spoke to one writer in person and he brushed me off as he left his office.

I'm so frustrated. This really isn't fair. I barely have money for applications, and to potentially not even have it reviewed because of zero LOR's being in is so darn upsetting.

I'm trying. I'm putting in the work. I really am. I just need to get a chance by having these applications in front of the adcom.

  11. I'm getting a bit nervous over here.

I've done everything on my end, but 2/3 recommenders aren't responding to emails, haven't submitted a thing, and are totally unavailable. This really worries me, especially because one of my programs requires that letters be in by the deadline. :/

I've called their offices a few times today hoping to get ahold of them, sent weekly emails etc etc. It's a ghost town over here.

Funny! I'm not sure. . . I don't think I have a doppelgänger - what is your intended focus? :) I selected many of the programs because of POI, but also because of their solid programs in general.

Personalizing each application is the most difficult, though hopefully the most rewarding. Due to the structure of my MA and because I've taken a year to be an instructor, I've luckily had a bit more time to prepare than most. Even with all the extra time, I still feel woefully unprepared.

On an unrelated note, the .hack series is the shiz. It's been a long time, but I still remember staying up until midnight/1:00 a.m. watching it on Toonami and playing the games on PS2.

I'm so glad that you figured out the reference! BlackRose from .hack was my favorite.

    I'm an Africanist/ afro-modernist, so we're not twins I guess. lol.

Good luck with this season :) !!

Applying to seventeen schools. Almost finished.

Didn't think I'd be back at Grad Cafe so soon, but good to see all of you again (and welcome to those who are entering the fray for the first time).

Are we secretly the same person? Why are we applying to similar programs and the same number of programs? haha

I've only finished two apps. I'm really trying to personalize each one and it's taking so long.
