  1. Thanks to both of you It's to Virginia Tech (gotta update my signature), where I visited and fell in love. I still have eight pending responses, so I don't want to make my final decision until I hear from more, but it's definitely my frontrunner
  2. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! "I am pleased to inform you that the Math Department will recommend thatyou be offered admission and a graduate teaching assistantship." *happy dance*
  3. Yep, I can definitely relate to that. Stress that I can do something about? No problem- that's why I want to go to grad school in the first place. But if I'm helpless and just waiting? I'm not going to be in a good place.
  4. I only applied to one school last cycle because they said they had rolling admissions...and I applied last May for the fall semester. Needless to say I wasn't successful. Emailing the professors to let them know was awkward, but I knew I'd be applying again which made it a little better. It helped to know that they've all been through this before- they know it can be a rough and not terribly straightforward process.
  5. That's a little weird- is that a small department?
  6. I sent my first impatient email today One of my applications didn't even say "under review by the department" or really anything at all, so I figured that was a good enough in to ask when I should expect some feedback. Of course, the response was vague and gave no real answers, other than that I'm still up for consideration which I guess is positive! And the response was also copied to the pure math overseer, so I may actually get a more substantial response. At the weekend visit, I asked some of the other prospectives whether they also had the vast majority of their schools not respond yet, and I was one of several, so my spirits have been bolstered a small amount- hopefully enough that the rest of this waiting doesn't drive me to insanity...no promises, though!
  7. - A professor who constantly nagged me to apply for grad school. Even if it is a year afterwards, his support has been incredibly important in the application process. - My other primary professor and honors adviser for their LoR's and positive feedback/support. - Improved mental health- I know a year ago, when I was planning to be in grad school, I 100% would have dropped out and hated myself for it. - A flexible job/boss that has let me do whatever I need to apply to schools. - A job that pays enough that I can afford applications, the move, etc. - A healthy body so I can run. - Gradcafe, for commiseration and support. - My curiosity, for causing my interest in math/education to continue longer than perhaps it should have
  8. I work from home right now doing transcription work for a really small company. I let my employer know since a couple months ago, I was responsible for 40-50% of the output, but things have been growing very rapidly, which means my leaving won't be as much of a problem, which is good.
  9. @thepinkdragon76 - Here's to an eventful and positive week! All the subtlety in communications without any promises is starting to feel rough for me, and it sounds like that's what your experience with that school has been as well.
  10. After a couple days of insanely packed schedules, my first (and possibly only?) visit is over. While the program coordinator didn't say it outright, there was heavy implication that we would all be accepted, and should hear back in the next two weeks for sure, most likely next week. I'm super excited- I fell in love with the school, the faculty, the students, the program...I could definitely see myself spending the next 5+ years there
  11. Just came back to complain that I'm still waiting on those dang nine decisions...2/11 is not an acceptable rate for this late Grrrrr
  12. I applied to a total of 11 schools this cycle for pure math- the schools are all listed in my signature. I've gotten one acceptance with funding (but for a master's), one rejection, and every one of the other nine has yet to give any decision. The one positive thing is I have a visit at Virginia Tech this weekend, so that seems promising. But to hear absolutely nothing from eight of them seems insane. Are math departments just slower to put out decisions than most programs? When should I expect to hear back (and should I contact schools to ask when I will hear back)?
  13. Yikes! What is a professor doing disappearing for two weeks in the depths of a semester? What a crazy situation, hope that you can get it resolved super quickly!
  14. You can click on the top of the textbox itself and press "delete" (not backspace) and it should go away. It's a little touchy, but it works
  15. I agree with everything but this- we're a month out from the final notification date, and I still have only two official decisions out of 11- I'd agree if schools were more reasonable about when they actually sent out their acceptances. And those nine missing schools, only one is an implicit rejection (waitlist and acceptances already posted)- the other eight have had no results posted, so I know it's the schools taking forever.
  16. I think part of it is they don't want to send out mass rejections and find out not enough of the accepted/waitlisted students would be attending. Although I guess that depends on the size of the school's waitlist. A big portion of the time taken is the sheer number of competitive applicants. When you have 10-ish spots for a program with possibly in the hundreds of applicants, most of which who are well qualified, I can't imagine the nightmare the process must be.
  17. You can check out here (http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php) to see whether the schools you applied to have sent anything out yet this year. If there are acceptances and wait lists posted for this year, and you have yet to hear anything, that does not bode well for your application in most cases. However, if nothing at all has been posted, it's more likely the school just hasn't sent out any decisions and you're still totally in the running. Some fields take a lot longer to get stuff out than others, so I suspect you're fine- I'm in a similar situation right now, have only hear from 2 of 11, with one more expected rejection based on this year's results. Hang in there! A couple weeks from now, everything should be much better
  18. One of the schools I've been expecting a rejection from (a bunch of acceptances and waitlists posted a couple weeks ago, but nothing else) had exactly *one* person post a rejection. Sometimes I really don't get this process!
  19. I could see them sending things via mail and email on the same day- then they would have one time where they could tell anyone who emailed them what their decision is, instead of people trying to figure it out themselves (as we all try to do...).
  20. That's a great idea! It can be rough on off-days for running, since exercise in general helps a ton with stress/waiting anxiety for me, so yoga is definitely something I'll try in the downtime.
  21. That's an interesting way to do it, asking a person not directly in the program so there are no possible negatives! The whole situation sounds quite strange to me, though. I probably would've contacted the program director by now, but would've been torn about it.
  22. http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php is always the best place to check (and restricted to your specific program)- most of the people who regular this forum also tend to post their results
  23. I did get one email at 10:30 PM (EST), and I've seen a couple people post things with other pretty late times, but I don't think I've seen any in the early or mid morning.
  24. Man, three good rejection quotes in one! Right after it... To to poster below, it's refreshing to know Harvard rejected a racist like you. ...coming from another person who was accepted to the same program. Mmmm, karma.
  25. Depression doesn't mean you're necessarily sad. As someone who's dealt with it for as long as I can remember, my worst bouts tend to be where I'm utterly apathetic, and often cynical. From this post, this definitely sounds like you could be depressed. Keep in mind also that depression in a lot of cases has nothing to do with whether your circumstances are positive or negative- everybody feels down when things don't go their way (i.e. they were rejected everywhere they applied), but if everything's going the way you had hoped, and you're still feeling down, it's time to see a therapist. Trust me, it's 100% worth it.
