Anyone else accepted to UT Health?
drunkenduck replied to drunkenduck's topic in Public Health Forum
I agree completely. I was hoping it would get me excited about attending, but it left me feeling kind of like... uh oh ? . During the breakout section, I asked how many students would be in my cohort, and they refused to even ballpark it, which seems like a red flag. They also suggested that they were accepting many more students than normal this year, which makes me worried that they aren't going to be able to support us all. And during the Q and A, one of the students, when asked why he picked UT Health, said "it's no Johns Hopkins but it's cheap".... um what. Overall I'm feeling a little underwhelmed and I'm just hoping that this is the right choice. -

Me either. I really want that in-state tuition! -

My acceptance came like three months ago, so I'm guessing you're either rejected or possibly waitlisted. I'd email them and ask for an update! -

I'm still waiting to hear from one last program, but I'm pretty sure I will be accepting UT Health! -
I applied to UCLA community health, too. Based on what I've seen on the results page and this forum, I'm really expecting a rejection at this point ?I agree that they should be more considerate and just tell us if we're not getting in!

I wouldn't tell them that you've changed research interests, considering you're trying to convince the adcom/POI that you're incredibly dedicated to your research topic! And it could make it harder for them to pair you with a POI.

On Feb. 5th, I asked UCLA CHS for an update and they said "The department of community’s health sciences is currently making selections. You can expect a decision within the next month." So, I'm expecting a rejection within the next 4 days ?

You bring up a good point, I have been focusing mostly on funding and ignoring the other pieces of the puzzle! In truth, this program has the best research fit out of all the programs I applied to. I have kind of a niche area, and the professor who would be my advisor is doing exactly what I want to do. I kind of forgot about that in my concern about funding, thank you for reminding me! -

@brightbluebirdsThanks for the information, that jives with what I've been able to piece together as well! I've also heard that a lot of students get jobs at the Anderson Medical Center, because they pay better than the assistantships (although that's not much help to you in Austin). The lack of tuition waiver is a little worrisome to me, because it doesn't seem very supportive, you know? And I've heard so many times that one should never pay for their PhD... Austin does seem like a cool city to live, though! I live in the Midwest, so Texas is going to be a big change for me. Granted, after seeing Texas in the news so much recently, I'm a little less excited about making the move ? @DrPH21 Thanks for responding! It's low on my personal list as well, but I'm starting to think it's going to be my only option ? Congrats on your other acceptances! -
I started a new topic for people who are considering UT Health, if anyone is interested in chatting about it!

I was accepted to the Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion PhD program a couple of months ago, and I was wondering if anyone else on here was accepted to the school of public health, and what are your thoughts on the school? I'm not sure what to think about it! It's ranked 23rd, which is pretty good, but they also don't guarantee funding, which seems kind of sketchy. Any thoughts? Pertinent information? Will you accept your offer or no? I'd love to chat about it.

Congrats!! Was it a personalized email or auto generated?

It's totally fine to politely decline an interview request, and you're absolutely right that they'll appreciate you allowing them to direct their energy towards a candidate who might say yes.

I asked a program director for feedback, after interviewing and then being rejected. She just said that I had a strong package and in a non-Covid year they might have been able to accept me. So it wasn't super helpful, but it was nice.

I keep getting emails from them inviting me to their virtual open houses, and I keep thinking I'm getting a decision! ?

I think Tulane PhD results should be coming out any time now. Anybody hear anything?

When a program funds you, they become invested in whether you succeed or not, because their money is on the line. When students fund themselves, the program has much less to lose if the student doesn't excel. Do you really want to invest tens (maybe hundreds) of thousands of dollars, plus years of your life, into a department that doesn't want to/can't invest in you?

???

Fit is 80% how similar your research interests are to a prospective advisor's and 20% how well they like your personality.

At least half of each my my interviews was me asking questions to the faculty. It's pretty normal. I think that in most cases, the main purpose of the interview is to make sure you seem like a chill person to work with and to recruit you.

You click on your username in the top right corner, select "account settings", and then on the left, it will say "signature", where you can put whatever you want to be your signature.
