Admittedly, my guilty pleasure for animal history IS my research focus so.... Other areas that I really enjoy, albeit not sure if you would call them guilty: 1. I really love African history especially the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s history. 2. The French Resistance has always been a favorite of mine, especially when focusing on young women and teenagers who joined the Resistance to dismantle traditional roles for young people and women in France. 3. I really like sports history, especially Formula One history and football history. 4. I’m really fascinated by the family life and divorces during wartime for some reason, mainly the divorces. It just fascinates me how women can divorce their husbands and only inform them by a simple letter while they’re on the front lines.

I received an email from the department informing them that I didn’t get in. They were very nice about it and said that they unfortunately only had 10 spots for admission. They did say that they liked my application so that was nice.

I know this thread is a few years old, but I’ve accepted a PhD position at Kansas State for fall 2019 in their history department. Ill be moving from Indiana and I’m just wondering how Manhattan is. Is it easy to get around without a car the first year? Are there apartments close to campus that are pet friendly? I’ll have a cat with me. The campus looks really nice from pictures that I’ve seen.

Well, I didn’t get into IU. A bit bummed because it was my daddy’s alma marter and it would have been a nice tribute to him in the wake of his passing. Ah well, Kansas State seems like a better fit for me anyway. It’s a smaller department which I like, they have the WWII Studies association, enviornmental history professors, a vet school whose library I can utilize and my adviser matches up very well for my project.

Awe, thanks. If you end up at NIU, I would be happy to tell you about it in depth and in person next fall. -

One thing that my adviser told me and that has really stuck with me is to not compare yourself to others in your cohort. I’m the only one in my department whose research focuses on animals. I love it, but my cohort doesn’t understand sometimes why I’m doing animal history as opposed to traditional military, political, gender, etc history. Everyone in your cohort has unique research and that should be celebrated rather than torn down or feeling like you’re insignificant compared to others. -

I heard back from admissions at IU. The second round of decisions will go out in early to mid March. I was told to contact them if I have not heard anything by the end of March.

So I’m still waiting on a response from IU. I’m wondering if I should email their graduation admissions director though. My father unexpectedly passed away the day that NIU’s semester started, so I’m taking a leave of absence this semester and I’ll finish my MA in the fall. Would it be rude to email the admissions committee at IU to inquire on the status of my application and if I’m accepted, to kindly ask them to defer it to fall 2019? I haven’t heard anything back from them so I’m assuming that I am waitlisted, but I don’t want to prevent someone from being accepted this year that can take my spot.

I’m still trying to think if I should just accept K-State’s offer or still wait IU’s decision. My application still says submitted which is really frustrating for me. Kansas State seems like a bit of a bigger fit for me though.
-
I don’t know if this helps, but I applied to Kansas State’s history PhD program and I received an acceptance email last Friday. So, decisions are slowly going out which is good.
-
Thanks for this. I appreciate the update.

Ugh. That’s annoying. I picked IU because it’s in state and close to home. K State does seem like the perfect program for me though, but I’m unsure if I should commit to them without hearing from IU.
-
I really wish IU would release their decisions soon. I would like to be able to tell admissions at K State whether I am truly deferring for next year or not. Ugh. Waiting for the decision from one school is torture.

Has anyone heard a thing from Indiana University (IU)? I received my acceptances from Kansas State and Northern Illinois University. I was rejected from Purdue sadly. My MA is being done at Northern Illinois now, so I’m looking to Kansas State or IU for my PhD. I’m hoping that I hear from IU soon so I can get in touch with Kansas State. Though I am looking to defer my admission to next year.
