  1. Admittedly, my guilty pleasure for animal history IS my research focus so.... Other areas that I really enjoy, albeit not sure if you would call them guilty: 1. I really love African history especially the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s history. 2. The French Resistance has always been a favorite of mine, especially when focusing on young women and teenagers who joined the Resistance to dismantle traditional roles for young people and women in France. 3. I really like sports history, especially Formula One history and football history. 4. I’m really fascinated by the family life and divorces during wartime for some reason, mainly the divorces. It just fascinates me how women can divorce their husbands and only inform them by a simple letter while they’re on the front lines.
  2. I received an email from the department informing them that I didn’t get in. They were very nice about it and said that they unfortunately only had 10 spots for admission. They did say that they liked my application so that was nice.
  3. I know this thread is a few years old, but I’ve accepted a PhD position at Kansas State for fall 2019 in their history department. Ill be moving from Indiana and I’m just wondering how Manhattan is. Is it easy to get around without a car the first year? Are there apartments close to campus that are pet friendly? I’ll have a cat with me. The campus looks really nice from pictures that I’ve seen.
  4. Well, I didn’t get into IU. A bit bummed because it was my daddy’s alma marter and it would have been a nice tribute to him in the wake of his passing. Ah well, Kansas State seems like a better fit for me anyway. It’s a smaller department which I like, they have the WWII Studies association, enviornmental history professors, a vet school whose library I can utilize and my adviser matches up very well for my project.
  5. Awe, thanks. If you end up at NIU, I would be happy to tell you about it in depth and in person next fall.
  6. I’m from Indiana, South Bend isn’t all cracked up as ND fans like to think. Haha
  7. One thing that my adviser told me and that has really stuck with me is to not compare yourself to others in your cohort. I’m the only one in my department whose research focuses on animals. I love it, but my cohort doesn’t understand sometimes why I’m doing animal history as opposed to traditional military, political, gender, etc history. Everyone in your cohort has unique research and that should be celebrated rather than torn down or feeling like you’re insignificant compared to others.
  8. I heard back from admissions at IU. The second round of decisions will go out in early to mid March. I was told to contact them if I have not heard anything by the end of March.
  9. So I’m still waiting on a response from IU. I’m wondering if I should email their graduation admissions director though. My father unexpectedly passed away the day that NIU’s semester started, so I’m taking a leave of absence this semester and I’ll finish my MA in the fall. Would it be rude to email the admissions committee at IU to inquire on the status of my application and if I’m accepted, to kindly ask them to defer it to fall 2019? I haven’t heard anything back from them so I’m assuming that I am waitlisted, but I don’t want to prevent someone from being accepted this year that can take my spot.
  10. I’m still trying to think if I should just accept K-State’s offer or still wait IU’s decision. My application still says submitted which is really frustrating for me. Kansas State seems like a bit of a bigger fit for me though.
  11. I don’t know if this helps, but I applied to Kansas State’s history PhD program and I received an acceptance email last Friday. So, decisions are slowly going out which is good.
  12. Thanks for this. I appreciate the update.
  13. Ugh. That’s annoying. I picked IU because it’s in state and close to home. K State does seem like the perfect program for me though, but I’m unsure if I should commit to them without hearing from IU.
  14. I really wish IU would release their decisions soon. I would like to be able to tell admissions at K State whether I am truly deferring for next year or not. Ugh. Waiting for the decision from one school is torture.
  15. Has anyone heard a thing from Indiana University (IU)? I received my acceptances from Kansas State and Northern Illinois University. I was rejected from Purdue sadly. My MA is being done at Northern Illinois now, so I’m looking to Kansas State or IU for my PhD. I’m hoping that I hear from IU soon so I can get in touch with Kansas State. Though I am looking to defer my admission to next year.
  16. So, I've been accepted into a MA program for this fall and I'm super excited. However, I'm also a bit apprehensive. My focus during my undergrad was in the American Civil War. I did not complete a thesis during that time but my favorite professor allowed me to give several speeches to the local civil war round table where I attended college. The school I was accepted into sounds wonderful. It's in IL and they also have a public history program which I'm looking into. I've accepted a TA position and I'm heading up soon to look at the campus. The only issue is that there is no true civil war historian on staff. There are a number of falculty that specialize in military history and the study of violence, as well as a few professors specializing in nineteenth-century American history. I'm just wondering if I may have made a mistake by heading to a school that does not have a true, dedicated historian in what I want to focus on. Edit: I should have mentioned that I am considering obtaining a doctorate degree and I'm worried if this may hinder my admissions in anyway.
  17. I did my undergrad at Purdue in history! You'll love it! We have wonderful professors in the department. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about campus!
  18. This thread is making me feel better. I switched my major from animal science to history during my sophomore year at Purdue because my grades were awful and I didn't like my courses. My final undergrad GPA was 2.95 and my major GPA was a 3.4. I've done volunteer work at a local historical society here in Indy and a former professor has allowed me on two separate occasions to give speeches to the Tippecanoe Civil War Round Table despite not having a pHD. I applied for a museum studies MA program at IUPUI and I'm anxiously awaiting a decision. It makes me feel better to see people with GPAs around mine, getting accepted.
  19. Hi all. I'm new here. I'm waiting to hear on an a decision from IUPUI on their museum studies program. Anyway, I originally have my BA from Purdue (Boiler Up!) and I applied to IUPUI for museum studies in hopes of maybe becoming a museum curator. I've been volunteering at the Benjamin Harrison Home since 2012 in Indianapolis and I've had an intern with the curator learning curating practices. But there is still a part of me that wants to become a historian. My focus was the civil war and the western theater while at Purdue. My question is that if I am accepted into IUPUI's museum studies program is it possible to switch majors before classes start and not lose time? I would want to switch into Public History with a Museum Studies certificate track as public history is actually a decent route to take if you are considering a historian route. (I.e: you can still do a thesis and still get historian training without a traditional history MA). Would it be frowned on switching majors if I am accepted? Or is it rather common?
