Claimed over on FB by a few folks fwiw
-
I'm sure the folks will post here soon-- Yale acceptance (and multiple WL/rejections) are confirmed via the FB group. Check the portal!

I'm interested to see what happens this year with "over accepting" while expecting a certain number to decline. I know one place did this last year and almost everyone accepted (whoops) which contributed to a closed admissions cycle this year. The extension of the spreadsheet is putting together a 1 page summary outline that departments can use/adapt that captures this type of information along with pertinent application information (e.g., what does "official" transcript mean for your application, what is the application fee, are there fee waivers available, deadlines since a few too many departments ended up having 2 different ones listed this past cycle across pages on their websites, etc.). At this point transparency in the process will make everyone happier I imagine and in a digital age having folks update their information (e.g., Stanford may no longer want 2 official hard copies of transcripts but still had that one their website until this year) would be kinda nice.

Right now for predictions it looks like 75% of schools are within a week of the predicted date and 95% have been within 2 weeks (n=41). So, who knows ??♂️

This year it's going to be...different potentially. U of O apparently is accepting 1 person it seems. University of Washington has historically had cohorts around 4-5 in size but for two years in a row we've gotten lucky with some funding elements that allowed us to bring on more folks. Schools also tend to have a limit on how many international students they can admit every year so, for some folks, that might also make things more chaotic. After a quick look at past trends (which are rough since we don't always have the number of how many students get accepted each year for all the schools) I would expect that places will be forced to reduce their incoming cohort sized by at least 1-2 folks at minimum and/or they will only be able to make initial offers but not pull from a waitlist in some cases (hopefully rare cases but it did happen last year).
-
A gentle reminder that this is the rejection thread. Admissions are, and always have been, a chaotic shot in the dark for everyone applying with a ton of variables including arbitrary ones like who read the sample, who remembered to show up to the faculty meeting, who is on the admissions committee, etc. in addition to the application itself. Folks are invited and encouraged to take a look at the conversations from years past on this matter and to take the conversation either to DMs or the venting thread. This isn't the place for it. L

Someone on the FB group appears to have claimed an acceptance back on the 6th via phone ?

How much information should I let schools know about my other options?
MtnDuck replied to millionrubios's topic in Philosophy
I minor point for folks who are admitted to US based schools to add on to Philokev's response. Many US departments cannot require an admitted applicant to accept or decline their offer on a timeline before April 15th. On or after April 15th it's a bit more dicey (I have one colleague who was accepted to both Cornell and Berkley on the 15th and both said they needed to hear back by X time), but if a school is saying "you have X number of days" and requires a hard yes/no before the 15th (yes if it's two weeks from the 15th then "you have 2 weeks makes sense"), they may be going against pretty well established practices through the CGS.. For US based schools, I would recommend checking to see if they are a signatory to the April 15th Resolution. It doesn't hurt to share the good (other acceptances and waitlists) but be vague on the bad. You aren't required to share everything but if it does turn out that you get into other places sometimes that can help with additional funding! It's also okay to be a bit vague ("I've heard positive news from a few places and am currently weighing my options financially, with respect to fit, location, etc." or "I'm waiting on a few more places and want to wait until I hear back just so I can know about all my options") since they don't need to know everything. Know that sometimes departments will ask that you keep them in the loop since, in the past, there have been problems with folks not letting departments know they will not be accepting an offer/not taking themselves off of a waitlist. Folks not keeping them up to date messes up the process and can limit their ability to bring in a full class. -
It was claimed on Facebook fwiw
-
Here is the past data from Fordham (unless I misentered something which has happened before). They usually released by mid Feb or so but have gone as late as March 1st ??♂️
-
The timing is about right but yeah a direct claim would be nice ? Are you the person that heard via phone on the 6th by chance?
-
You probs already saw this on the FB group, but it's up to two acceptances and it sounds like a few folks were asked to send in a second writing sample a while back (and not all of them have heard back)
-
I don't think OP is on the forum (or minimally didn't post it to the results page). It was a direct report from the FB page though I think only one person reported hearing back and there were no other reports of a waitlist. I just followed up with them and it's an early fellowship offer fwiw so I've updated the spreadsheet and the color-code!

Since we have a number of new folks on the forum and there have been a number of questions about what the spreadsheet is and what the FB group is, seems best to make a brief post with links to connect folks with the resources! Here's the spreadsheet: Philosophy Admissions 2020 Spreadsheet If folks want to share the spreadsheet, feel free to do so using bit.ly/PhilAdm (this is so I can see how many folks access it but I just see the # of clicks). For the last three years I've used the spreadsheet to track A/W/R after folks applied. As things are released, and as we receive credible information about what all has been sent out, I'll update the spreadsheet with that information. The first two tabs are dedicated to tracking releases and predictions of when things will come out. The middle two tabs are the application requirements for PhD and MA schools with deadlines and other information. Aside: Part 2 is a survey of how many schools folks applied to/barriers they encountered so feel free to fill that out if you have time/bandwidth. More info on that can be found here. _________ The Facebook group is Philosophy Graduate Applicants. Folks can join by clicking the link (but be sure to take heed of the questions folks are asked to answer when they click join or you may not get added). The FB groups is a rad space to find other folks who are applying and ask questions. As with the forum just don't be a jerk/be charitable as we're all in this together! -L

Here you go: https://www.facebook.com/groups/philgradapp If you join be sure to fill out the questions or it won't go through (had that happen to a few folks recently). Also note this is a Philosophy Admissions group (I just noticed that it looks like you're mostly applying to non-Philosophy programs?)
-
Here you go: bit.ly/PhilAdm

First, congrats! Second, thanks for hopping into the forum to confirm--I'll go ahead and update the spreadsheet now that it's confirmed ? Just to check-in, did they mention a fellowship at all in your email? (sometimes those go out first and if so I note it on the sheet)

Any idea if Berkeley decisions will be delayed this year?
MtnDuck replied to NeedAnAcceptance's topic in Philosophy
Here is the link to what @a ravenclawis pointing to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/philgradapp/announcements -
I think it's unlikely. They do usually release on a Friday so it could be an early fellowship offer and the fact that they delayed the semester start may mean they read through things faster so it's not impossible that it's true. However, if so it would be their earliest release ever by almost two weeks.
-
Unlikely. I think someone is being an jerk and submitting BS reports. Same with the CMU one tbh though they had some additional info...
-
Claimed over on the FB group. Also the mod says no one is in the waiting list for the FB group. Can you check to see if you got accepted/check that the questions were answered when you clicked join?
-
Might take a while if all the mods are in class/offline. Next time I see one of them on I'll DM them to let them know someone is waiting to join!
-
-
May be missing a few of them though for the interviews (we've had some schools do surprise interviews last year that weren't interviewing in years past). For the spreadsheet the link folks shared works, though if you share it to other philosophy folks feel free to use this one: bit.ly/PhilAdm (helps me see how many clicks it gets ?)
-
Someone else made a note about fellowship decisions getting released first for Duke, so you might not be out of the running yet!
