2017 Acceptances
orphic_mel528 replied to JessicaLange's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I am an Early Modernist! So there's a very good chance we might end up at the same conference someday. -

The standard goodbye for academics is, "I'll see you in another life/conference." -

Please tell me I can keep both of you when all this is over. It doesn't have to be like Casablanca. -

I got one, too! I actually laughed out loud at the reason for rejection. I didn't take it personally, but I also didn't particularly see the reason for including it. It wasn't nearly specific enough that if I had been shut out this season, I could have applied that information to improve my chances next go-around. Oh well. Sharing with all of you this little piece of tao from one of my favorite musicians, Joe Walsh. It's been helping me keep things in perspective for years: "As you live your life, it appears to be anarchy and chaos, and random events, non-related events, smashing into each other and causing this situation or that situation, and then, this happens, and it’s overwhelming, and it just looks like what in the world is going on. And later, when you look back at it, it looks like a finely crafted novel. But at the time, it don’t." For those of you who are having a tough season: keep writing your novel, even when it seems like Lemony Snicket is showing up every other day, intoning why things are not going to work out how you expected or hoped. You're gonna be okay. -
BA and MA at Same University

I've never heard of this being frowned upon, and have seen it in many faculty profiles. I really wouldn't worry about it.- 11 replies

Congratulations! I live 20 minutes from Villanova, so if you have any questions about the area, feel free to reach out. -

Unless they have something phenomenal to offer me by way of funding, I'm pretty much decided on UMASS for a number of reasons. -

Dr. Bovilsky, mainly. I would honestly be surprised if either offered me admission, just based on resources. -

I have to admit that both universities were safeties for me--not because they don't have great programs, but because they don't have a lot of support for Early Modernists like myself. Thanks for the info! -

Am I the only person who applied to University of Washington and University of Oregon? Rejection and inclination have both pretty much made up my mind, but I don't think I've seen anyone else who even applied there. -

Sorry to hear about this bit of carelessness. Maybe they were trying to tell you that they have faculty with similar interests, but none who have the time/resources to invest in you this cycle. We often don't know from our side how many people a professor is supervising, or whether they're busy with their own research, or even about to take a sabbatical. Either way, I'm sorry for your disappointment, and they could have been more attentive, for sure. -

It was less resembling the prunes and more consuming them medicinally for regularity, but either way. -

Ah now, Bradley. Thanks for the compliment. We geriatrics were in another thread earlier today talking about prunes; sorry you missed it, but I think @Wyatt's Terps took down minutes. -

Look at all your glorious mathyness. @positivitize is actually my long lost twin. It's like the Luke and Leia thing, but without the awkward, socially unacceptable kissing that we'd all have to pretend never happened. -

I see we've skipped the entertaining hallucinations phase and gone directly into the paranoid conspiracy phase of the season, which I feel is a mistake, as I really wanted to see Bing-Bong again. -

In all seriousness, any more buzz around Rutgers? I see 2 acceptances on the board, but nothing else. Considering the timeline, I'd think all their offers have gone out now, no?
