that is a good point. It is a Friday! Don't think about it until Monday. Wouldn't it make the recruitment visit awkward then?
-
You have until April 15th. I do not understand why anyone would want to accept any offer now even if you do not have competing offers until you visit (unless you do not plan on visiting).
-
trolls. 11 entries and not a single claim on here.
-
gradcafe's been down the last few hours.
-
did the Harvard Gov. poster get it confused with Harvard PEG (can confirm through SO that they are out)?
-
subfield or overall? I would say the higher ranked one, but if it is a Duke/UNC type distance from each other (not the best example) then go to the one with more money because you can take courses at either dept (from what I've heard).

Comparing departments: alignment of interests vs. attention?

I will ask about advising at recruitment events. Co-authorship is nice, but if you have a really good advisor, s/he should be able to guide you on how to publish on your own. I was told that on the job market solo articles count for more than something co-authored with an advisor. -
the norm seems to be $300-$500 for airfare and either you stay with a current grad or they book a hotel room for you (covered and not part of the $300-$500 for airfare/gas/whatever).

a lot of programs/faculty like to talk about how underranked they are on USNews. Georgetown IR is the only one that truly is. IMHO.
-
that is a lot for one field. Similarly ranked programs get a little more than that for the entire department.
-
do they distribute the list after they've informed those who are admitted or before? I'm hoping that Stanford and Michigan release today.

Keohane is retiring soonish (source: faculty at Princeton) This has been rumored for years. Don't count on it. Congrats!
-
Acceptable, yes. Might want to hold off on that for a week or two and just enjoy that you have somewhere to go in the Fall! Faculty moving is normal and I'm not sure how forthcoming they would be with that info. Grad students may be a better source of info.
-
Safe to assume rejection for Duke and Columbia if you haven't heard anything.
-
bumping this.
-
I'm sorry, but I have to know. Did you end up buying the book?
-
Thanks for the information!
-
Mine too. This is why I prefer it when the DGS or someone from the department emails those accepted.
-
that can't be ruled out.
-
the info the poster provided I've seen before. It is likely it is not a troll.
-
Having an acceptance lessens the blows of rejections. Doesn't mean you stop caring.

Frank profile evaluation (Political Theory)

other side of the coin: He is likely to complete a PhD and he has already demonstrated that s/he enjoys academic work. S/he also demonstrates that s/he could make a contribution to field (assuming SOP and writing sample are good). Having said that, this is something that needs to be directly addressed in your SOP. Maya Sen at Harvard got a JD before entering a polisci program. I don't think adcoms would hold it against someone. It does need to be addressed. -
I would say something along the lines of "at this time, I have chosen to explore other options" or "I have chosen to go into a different direction with my academic career". I don't think I would even bother with #4. It would be kind of rude to bring up rankings, fit, or personal life. Not sure quite what to do, but sometimes leaving things unsaid is better than digging yourself a hole.

I'm waiting to visit schools before asking for more money. I may end up not liking the place after I visit, so why waste the energy haggling now? I haven't been admitted to a school yet with a waitlist, so I don't feel guilty about taking my time. If there was a waitlist and the school was ranked lower and not the best fit, I would decline without visiting. No reason to voice financial concerns if you still would not consider them over your other options if they gave you more $$$.
