  1. At my undergrad institution, a lot of people did first field American and second Theory, so I don't think it will be too much of a problem provided this is not your main person.
  2. How are you thanking your letter writers and when?
  3. It is a relief because you are done, but at the same time your fate is now sealed (somewhat).
  4. Just submitted my first app! Going to feel great once everything gets in!
  5. 1. Yes, but make sure s/he isn't your main person. 2. I hope so. I certainly am. 3. I'm skipping the question out of laziness, not knowing how to answer it, and being fully confident it will not impact my application.
  6. I would say wait until Monday or at least Saturday due to Thanksgiving...That is what I am doing anyways.
  7. Yes they all should even if instructions are not 100% clear.
  8. Thanks for this. I would definitely include in your SOP the faculty you want to work with/why you chose that school. Reasons for undertaking graduate work = your research interests/questions, then move on to research you've already completed (either in undergrad or in an MA program), and then end on how this particular institution will help your professional goals (this is where you bring in the faculty). Just a regular SOP.
  9. anybody worried that their POI is either leaving the department you are interested in or potentially facing tenure denial?
  10. Can you post the directions from whatever application you are looking at? Your question isn't that clear.
  11. Count me out (at least until I have at least submitted my apps)!
  12. you have a great profile. Don't worry about the private sector experience. It will not hurt you.
  13. @krapp I'm using an old paper that needs theory and quant work beefed up a bit. Starting a new paper would be impossible and probably not a good idea (at least for me).
  14. I got tired of working on the SOP, so I am finishing up/editing my writing sample.
  15. Some of this, but if you have applied before your old documents should now be considered rough drafts and you have to devote your life over the next few weeks to them to pull it off. Understandably, it is hard to work on something that you've already been rejected for, but you can wade in your sadness about last cycle after you are done applying this cycle.
  16. It isn't too late to ask, but getting very close. All letters should be asked for by Monday (IMO). Most professors probably aren't going to write them until a few days before the due date...
  17. You should regard their responses as being professional. They don't want to be negative in case you are admitted, but they don't want to bring your hopes up in case you are rejected. The Cubs won and Trump won...I think you should apply to a wide range of programs as you never know.
  18. I disagree. Spoke to my letter writers about this. Under review =/ accepted and no one I know thinks of it this way. Does it matter more than listing it as a working paper? Probably not. As I've said before only thing that matters is an acceptance not whether it is under review, but we aren't job applicants. *edit Sorry, forgot about desk rejects. If it is under review you will receive confirmation of it from one of the editors. So maybe write "submitted at" instead of "under review"?
  19. Mine is 2 full pages. Don't trim it down unless necessary. Keep all academic related points towards the top and the less relevant for the end (at least that is what I am doing).
  20. Congrats on the improvement!
  21. I've done the same as you (minus the link, which is a great idea). Hope that is enough.
  22. thoughts on a table of contents for the writing sample? I currently do not have one, but it is unlikely for the whole sample to be read. Thought it may be easier for them to jump to certain sections that they are interested in and my be helpful for those not in my sub sub-field.
  23. That is a good point. I guess it depends on framing.
  24. For the CV, are you guys only including academic related items? I don't see the point in including work experience, which, of course, is non-academic.
  25. Not forced or irrelevant. Go for it.
