  1. Haven't seen examples. Have seen comments of people already in programs to not worry about this. I have no idea how to fix your problem. Sorry.
  2. I agree with much of this. 1) if you don't have quant training, it is going to be tough to teach yourself in such a short amount of time and turnout a paper. 2) I think it is possible to throw together an excellent writing sample. Depends on how much time you spend on it each day. I think the writing sample is meant to demonstrate your ability to 1) think and 2) ability to write an academic paper. I would not worry too much about it being quantitative or comparative in nature. It is not great, but it is what you have. Make it clear in you SOP as to why you are moving from philosophy to comparative.
  3. It is my understanding that they do not combine scores from different tests.
  4. I would not send the 153Q, but that is my opinion. I did well on the AW (5.5) the first time. The second I got a 4.5, but I did better overall in quant and verbal, so I am refusing to retake over the AW. Of course, AW is not as important as the other two scores.
  5. I think the best thing to do is to be honest in the CV that it is under review and email the DGS with an updated CV whether the news is positive or negative. Every single academic has experienced rejection. It will not hurt your file. It will show that you are trying and that is a part of the game.
  6. I would say it only matters if it is accepted, but we are grad school applicants not graduate students looking for a TT job! Submitting a paper is a wonderful signal.
  7. Just email the DGS if anything changes. It is unlikely it will because the review process takes forever and possibly to your benefit if it doesn't (under review > rejected, IMO).
  8. Just spent a small fortune sending out GRE scores.
  9. Thanks for starting this! I'm still working on rough drafts of everything!
  10. No DGS is going to tell you to not apply.
  11. I don't see why would need to talk about why you picked Z school. I don't understand what you mean by faculty not being understanding of English not being your first language. I think any program would recommend that you work on your English. I don't think switching programs will solve that. The faculty will treat you like everyone else because they want you to get better, so you can be competitive. Your reasons for leaving your current program don't seem that serious, tbh. I see no reason to contact a DGS to discuss it. How do your research interests fit in your current program?
  12. I was told that no one cares about your second field. Not even when you are on the job market. EXCPET at liberal arts colleges where they may want you to teach IR courses in conjunction with CP or possibly methods. I doubt anyone on an admissions committee would take your 2nd field choice in consideration for admittance. I have no direct experience with this, however.
  13. Because it is the internet? idk. Do as you wish.
  14. GRE score and stellar SOP. I also recommend decreasing the amount you reveal about yourself on here.
  15. when you say doesn't belong in grad school you mean in terms of overall grads, gre, etc.?
  16. How true are the numbers given? A friend already currently attending a program (a T20) said that his program only gets about 150 applications each year and admit ~40. On the website of this school, it says they get 300 applicants each cycle... Not that any of this matters.
  17. How can you see which professor is about to leave?
  18. THANKS!
  19. Sorry for bumping this thread. Graphs are a no go in a statement of purpose, correct?
  20. My undergrad profs said the same thing. They want even farther though and said that not just simple things like regressions and time series, but more advanced quant methods. Do you have any thoughts on this?
  21. Agree with PizzaCat93, you should also see if the Sociology departments at the schools you are looking at lean quantitative or qualitative. Could potentially take a qualitative course in another department.
  22. why don't you create one thread to discuss stipends? If you do a search, there is plenty of info floating around here.
  23. I would like to know more as well. Seems odd that there is no funding for the first year. Usually have to worry about funding after the first few years.
