  1. Great idea!! Will be keeping up w/ that thread! I'd personally love to workshop SoPs
  2. Alas the wait continues. Also not to be a super creeper or anything, but I just saw your research interests on your page, and they sound really cool and somewhat similar to mine!! Would love to connect some time! Im primarily interested in food and culture, and how that they are mediated in online platforms-- broadly speaking of course. :-)
  3. Any news from NYU from anyone? Haven't seen much if any updates on the results page from NYU-- not even on the rejections front.
  4. Thank you both for your insight! I really appreciate it. I have to admit that I didn't put as much effort into my SoP as I probably should have, although I don't believe that I lacked seriousness while working on it. In the future, I know that I will refine it. I especially like what you said @rkstahl about focusing on one project. I will be more detailed for sure. Thank you very much also @farflung ! You give me hope that I will succeed in another round. I'm looking forward to taking a year or two off at the moment. I hope everyone receives answers soon! I think we can all agree that disappointing answers are better than none....
  5. Congrats to all of you getting interviews, and a special congrats to those who have gotten acceptances!! I have a question about the substance of applications. I'm asking not because I'm salty that I've gotten 3/6 rejections so far (LOL), rather I'm asking so that next time around I can have a better sense of what I need to be doing. Have any of you published anything? What would you say were some of the strongest points of your application/CVs? For example, I (thought) my SoP was very well written and outlined 2 good examples of projects I have and could undertake in the future. Also, I will be presenting at an international conference this spring; have received 2 FLAS fellowships, am editor for an art platform, and have research experience in a relevant field, and a bit of research experience in Anthro (I'm a Linguistics major!). I keep hearing about my peers publishing papers and all, which is FANTASTIC!, but I wonder if that's what places like Berkeley typically look for/admit. Thanks, and may the adcoms smile upon our apps favorably michelle
  6. Yess can someone pls claim? Also-- do y'all think that they are only accepting people they interviewed? Personally I didn't get an interview, so that's why I'm asking lol. I've already accepted I'm not getting in anywhere this cycle -which sucks!- but I'm looking forward to some time off from school. But anyway........
  7. I love this so much!!!!!!! Thank you for posting. You totally just made my day!!!! Sending you positive and encouraging thoughts your way ❤️
  8. We are in the same boat, then. My program (Anthro) is 'supposed' to have a feb/march notification window, but I've received swift rejections. Definitely sharing the same concern about interview invites right now :/
  9. I would like to add something: my mentor, who is my biggest intellectual inspiration, told me this evening that her first time around applying to grad school, she got rejected by everyone. But, seeing where she is now, and what an amazing human being she is as well, it is starting to seem that not getting in this first time is not....the end of the world, contrary to popular (my) belief.
  10. I applied to six, and the two that have responded so far have rejected me. One of them is my alma mater-- ouch! Anyway, best of luck to all of us, though personally I am slowly coming to terms with a possible reality that doesn't include grad school, at least this year. :-)
  11. @kekology4 ah hope so! Best of luck @TakeruK true all very good points, thx!
  12. Hello my nervous peers, since im religiously checking my email these weeks, I thought I'd take a moment to ask you to speculate about the following as we communally procrastinate and await messages of admissions and rejections. I submitted an app to UCLA's anthro program in December. Shortly thereafter, I received an email notification from Academia.edu telling me that someone from LA googled me and incurred upon my Academia profile. If you're not familiar with Academia it's a website where you can publish/share your research. I don't have anything uploaded; I just have it to follow certain researchers and publications. Do admissions overlords google potential students? What could that mean? Is this common? Best wishes, fellow budding scholars
  13. Haha good luck to you! Good question--what stage of grief is this? I don't know, but if I figure it out I'll let y'all know after I finish this slice of ice cream cake. Stress eating is not a thing right?
  14. Hi! I just heard back from the first two of 6 programs I applied to...rejected to both! I have the same concern as you... if I haven't heard back from other schools- is that a rejection too? I heard some people got interview invites to Berkeley today.. :/
  15. I love this and I feel this! I just got rejected from UOregon's Anthro program. That's 2/6 rejections so far (rest are pending). I supposedly had the strongest apps for the two schools I've gotten the No from, so I think, unfortunately and realistically, that I won't get in anywhere else. I'm definitely bummed, but I'm trying to look on the bright side: I can have a puppy now, do yoga, plant a garden, read for FUN-- who knows! A 9-5 job for a while might be just what I need right now. I feel really burnt out as I start this final semester of college. I think this is a blessing in disguise. The hardest part might be telling my Rec letter writers that I didn't get in (anywhere..). It's embarrassing! How are you all coping with this? What are your plans? I'd like lastly to note that I will be moving to Oregon and looking for jobs there..just because I can. Young, childless, degree-holding, and with a positive attitude: things could be worse?
  16. @ThousandsHardships thanks for your feedback! I agree, my statements of purpose have to be very high caliber. I'm very excited about writing them, and I hope that that good energy can translate into good writing. Everyone is telling me that I should have a prof look the statement(s) over before submitting, and although I concur, I almost feel like I'm asking for so much already? IDK. Maybe when my anxiety subsides, I can find a professional pair of eyes. Actually, I emailed someone on campus who posted about grad school app consultations. This is their focus of research and work, so I hope they will email me back soon so that they can take a look at it for a small fee. Anyway, thanks again!
  17. @jujubea yay thanks! im currently working out my statements of purpose. i have a small rough draft lying around somewhere on my computer, but it's not anything substantial. im hoping on getting this written out by nov 17 because i'll be out of the country for about a week. im also thinking about what i will submit as my writing sample. definitely will be polishing that up. i suspect it will be a sociolinguistics paper.
  18. hi everyone, i would also be interested in exchanging my SOP. im applying to anthropology!
  19. hi everyone, i juuuuust joined this site. i ran into it today between classes while trying to ease my ever present anxiety about the app process. im procrastinating a lot of work right now, so i thought i would do something relevant instead of watching another episode of criminal minds-- i don't have many episodes left!!! i'm hoping i can get feedback from y'all: do you think i have a competitive application? am i applying to programs that are too far out of my reach?? this haunts me constantly.... i want to apply to NYU, WashU, UIUC, IU-Bloomington perhaps UT Austin... and idk maybe more, but I haven't identified those yet. i'm looking at sociocultural anthro programs largely centered around food / tourism / national narratives, focusing on Latin America (Cuba, Peru) + american cultural imperialism. so, in the simplest way that i can, here's the bulk of my app: (note, i am NOT coming out of college with an Anthro BA but rather a Linguistics BA) -3 minors in Anthro / Latin American/Caribb. studies / Russian lang. and lit. -have been a research assistant since sophomore year to many projects (all linguistics/phonetics) -1 (semester long) internship in LING research (assistant) -bilingual editor (unpaid) at online art platform for latinxs to share their work -1 (year long) museum internship on campus. researching artifacts for gallery -have received FLAS fellowship twice to study Quechua -will have worked (remotely) at an important R&D company based in california -1 really really really amazing letter of rec. 2 that are also great, but one more than the other. -3.6 ~ 3.7 GPA -waiting to hear back from a conference to present at a panel in south america (on food aka super relevant) -GRE is next week. thinking i'll do really well on vocab/reading areas, not so much on math.... so like, idk so much about this. deff a weaker point? aaaaand, well, i think that's all that's really relevant. some days i feel like i have an okay chance at some places, some days im absolutely sure everyone will reject me. lol. what do you think guys?
