  1. That was really good! GIS is a really important tool and I'm glad you hammered on that. Do you use ArcGIS? I also enjoyed the three monitors you had in your office or wherever! I also liked the orangutan around your neck! When I get a chance to log-on and stuff, I'll vote three times! Good work!
  2. Reposting the two spreadsheets^^. In response to your question, you can check last year's spreadsheet and it'll say whether they were an alternate then offered an award. I think there are stats on that in one of the tabs!
  3. Thanks for doing that! I couldn't edit my first post ... so we're gonna have to repost. And I hope people stop randomly deleting things. I left a nice message on the spreadsheet to those people who like messing things up.
  4. Well, I know for both NDSEG and NSF you CANNOT have both. You cannot even defer NSF for two years to take NDSEG and then NSF. (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/how_to_apply/new_features_for_2011_nsf_grfp) But I see where you're getting at. What if you have a yearlong federal fellowship and take that and then defer NSF. I don't know if you can do that ... I currently just got the Fulbright and so I"m already assuming I can't get the NSF ... which sucks. I applied for all these fellowships (NSF, NDSEG, EPA) and can only take one ... at least it's Fulbright and it'll be out of this country ... but yeah ... hmm ... it's a good question though.
  5. I read somewhere ... last year's forum maybe ... that they send out stuff at the beginning of the week ... so maybe the next wave is coming soon ... ie. should be receiving Wed-Fri. I received mine Wed ... I think and it postmarked and sent the Friday before. Okay. I lied. Maybe they sent the next wave out Friday and it takes a while ... I still don't understand why certain things take as long or as short to get to their destination. My parents work for the post office and even they don't know!
  6. I wonder how many emails she gets in an hour? Lol. She probably gets as many as my advisor ~25/hr .. and might be a slow day ...
  7. Oh, okay. This makes more sense then. She definitely is VERY smart! Hmm, did you say you couldn't get the spousal stipend? Or that you couldn't get the Fulbright together? It seems you've basically laid out what you plan to do and it does make sense and it's logical. And yes, with her scores and GPA, that's a definite in for grad school! So it seems you should see if your gf is willing to wait a year for grad apps. Then sit down and talk with her and think this through one more time before making a final decision. But I'm also glad you two are very supportive of each other. It's just that there are lots of what if's in the equation.
  8. Okay, so I wouldn't know much about relationships, but I mentioned this to my officemates, and we've been talking about long-distance relationships and this for like the past hour! So, I think we need to know more about your situation. Is your gf trying to get a residence permit to work or study in the same country as you? Have you been in a long distance relationship before? Does she have her MA/PhD or in the process of getting one? When you go to your MA program, will she follow you? If this is too personal, it's okay. Thinking like an engineer, I need variables! Personally, I think the Fulbright is an amazing opportunity. Even though you got accepted into a top-notch MA program, I think the Fulbright would provide a better experience. You gain cultural competence and you may even come up with new ideas for your research. Furthermore, you only live once. I've heard this many times. How many times in your life will you get to live abroad for almost a year? Once you get into the drudgery of a PhD and work, it'll be difficult, unless you will be working abroad. So I guess the question is, how important is the Fulbright experience for your professional and personal growth? And does your relationship outweigh that? If your relationship is truly solid, and if she didn't get a permit, then you should take the Fulbright and it should be okay. Like someone mentioned, it's 10 months, not 5 years. If "she's the one", then you'll have 50+ years with her. Not considering relationship, if you are on the fence about Fulbright, take it, because I like said, you live only once, and it'll be an experience of a lifetime.
  9. Fulbright will send stuff by snail mail. But in the case of a certain specific program (i.e. Austria) you might be a preliminary email. For example, I got my acceptance in a large manila envelope last Wednesday and received a follow-up letter from the German Commission last Friday/Saturday with more details. If you look at the spreadsheet, this is why we ask what type of package people receive b/c it basically says your status ... which is kind of interesting b/c you know your status by what package is in your mail! Eek!
  10. We just need to send back that medical form filled out by a physician, right? And when they say three weeks, they mean like the letter can be postmarked w/in three weeks or like they must receive it within three weeks? I just hope they can fill everything out during this silly exam. And then we can get more info ...
  11. Thanks! I don't think we had to fill out an extra form. You guys filled out the 'PAD', right? BUT I think you will find out within the next week and week and half. I found the spreadsheet from last year and it seems ETAs to Germany were notified a week or a little under a week after Full Grants! Very exciting! BTW, where did you study abroad? You mentioned you were in Germany for a semester? Was that as an undergrad?
  12. Last year's spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets2.google.com/ccc?key=taWW8xiKve1Tm6Ow6bHdhYA#gid=0 This year's spreadsheet (remember to update + don't mess with the columns and rows ... ): http://spreadsheets1.google.com/ccc?authkey=CNHpkd4P&key=tyJ1HIbZ4lEWDG1vRUaAbnw&authkey=CNHpkd4P#gid=8
  13. Thanks! Don't worry, you'll hear soon. Do you know when last year's applicants found out? I don't have the spreadsheet handy ... but this envelope basically had a letter saying "good job" and then a medical form I need to have filled out in three weeks! So not too exciting! Apparently most of the meat will come later. So once you get your package/letter, schedule a physical exam ... ugh.
  14. O-M-G. I was already nervous to check my mail today. I stayed home and didn't want to drive to campus to my office. Of course, there's a large manila (I guess there is only one L ... hmm ..) envelope from IIE. Letter postmarked March 10th. Check your mail. If it can reach Pullman, WA (literally, middle of wheatfields) in a week, then you guys should be getting something soon (if you applied to European countries). I'm so exxxxxxcciiitted!
  15. I think we've beaten this subject to death, but as someone alluded to, I really think it depends upon who you are submitting your CV to and what for (ugh I ending sentences in prepositions ... anyways). So you'll always have your long CV with EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING including declined awards. If something calls for the NSF-style one-pager CV, then most likely don't put the declined fellowships. But if you're applying to something and you know putting that you declined an NSF fellowship would help you network or something, then yes it's okay. But it does depend. Obviously you will never send your entire 5-6 page CV, unless you really need to. It's more like a way to keep track of stuff. And as someone mentioned, if you declined a major fellowship, you probably received a more prestigious one in place or one that provided more money. Personally, if I got NSF, EPA STAR, and NDSEG (all three ... most unlikely! ha!) ... I would accept NDSEG and the decline the others. If I were submitting an abstract for an environmental conference, I might add I declined the EPA STAR, but not NSF. I dunno, I think I'm just rambling ... I'm just a first-year PhD student ...but just my thoughts ...
  16. I'll be in Bonn, a definite college town, so I think I should be okay. It's kind of funny. I contacted the prof who I want to work with and he was telling me how everyone rides their bicycle since it's a "small town". Only in Germany would they say a small town is 200k+ people! Ha! If he only knew my college town was 24,000 INCL the students ... And party supplies? That sounds like money well-spent.
  17. Oh! That sounds much better. And yes, Berlin is extremely doable on 800 Euros! Dunno about the West, like in Cologne and Bonn, where I'll be. I mean, if you wanted to eat a döner every night for dinner like my friend did for two weeks, you can definitely save money ... but I'm not so sure about saving your health ... haha.
  18. Isn't that pretty good? But then again, those Norwegian countries have a higher standard of living. I heard Germany was only 750 Euros ... which is like nothing ... but maybe it's more? Does anyone know how much the stipends are for different countries?
  19. All fixed, hopefully. http://spreadsheets0.google.com/ccc?key=tyJ1HIbZ4lEWDG1vRUaAbnw&authkey=CNHpkd4P#gid=8
  20. Congrats! Oh man, I am scared to check my mail now. I went back home for a few days and came back here (I go to a university 5 hours away) because I was getting anxious ... but I'll wait until the mailman comes ...
  21. Thanks guys for keeping an eye out on the spreadsheet. I haven't had the time to go through previous versions, but it seems people took care of the "mess". I appreciate the email I got to take a look at this. I suggest everyone checking their information. I might restrict access tonight to just see what kinds of options I have in terms of making sure this sh*t doesn't happen again and to clean up the mess w/o 20 people looking at the sheet. It's really annoying. Anyways, thanks guys! AND in regards to posting the link ... I could edit my first post and add the link there if you guys want that, so it'd be at least the first or second post of this long thread. thanks again. EDIT: Where did the first two rows go? ARGH.
  22. Congrats to everyone that's moving on! VERY EXCITING! Now you can plan your life! Man, I went home for a few days (spring break) thinking I'd get something in the mail, but am soooo nervous for getting back (I go to school 5 hours away) and checking my mail!!! Ahhh ... LOfi, did you apply for a DAAD grant? (you're applying to Germany, right?) Again, CONGRATS everyone and don't forget to update the spreadsheet: http://spreadsheets0...=CNHpkd4P#gid=0 EDIT: check your information on the spreadsheet to make sure it lines up with your name. Some people may not have added an entire row when inserting ... someone else was doing my research in civil engineering in Germany ... and I thought, wow these are similar ... well, until I saw the email. ; )
  23. Lol. Good story. I had to explain to my mom what Fulbright is, why I'm applying, and explain my whole educational career plan for the next 4 years. It was quite difficult. But I kept reiterating this letter part ... about calling me if I get something from Fulbright etc. BTW, what country did you apply to? EDIT: Looking at the spreadsheet from last year, it seems some people were notified at their current address ... hmm ...
  24. It's funny, I get daily emails with summaries of chats from this thread and the NSF GRFP. There was a lot of action before I posted the spreadsheet, and now it's "died down" a little. This kind of reminds me of the 'calm before the storm'. Also, I'm soooo nervous to find out the results. I know German applicants found out around this time ... I just hope my mom doesn't just think the Fulbright package is just some other piece of mail to throw on my bed!
  25. All, Someone brought to my attention that people were changing people's names on the spreadsheet to offensive words (e.g. line 8 and 18). So please look over the information on the sheet to make sure the information is correct. I have the ability to revert and see older editions and can look up who these people were before they were so pleasantly changed by some very nice people (NOT). I might need to restrict access to this spreadsheet if this keeps happening. But really, how old are we? Whatever. Right now the sheet is public. But I think I'll just keep a better eye out and look through more editions throughout the day. Thanks! crimson
