I can second MarthUser's statement. Of course, you want to be as strong a candidate as possible, but it really does change significantly depending on the application year, to a level that it is out of your control. I know for a fact that there were stronger candidates than me on paper at a few different programs I got into, but when the time came the fit that I had was much better than others. Smarts and drive will probably get you the interview, but being interesting, having good questions, or at the end of the day just being an actual, socialized human being is often what will get you through the door--again, in my own experience.

I decided to go ahead and let them know about my other offer. We'll see what happens.
And I probably shouldn't be so cagey with you all here (this forum has been a really helpful resource during my process)... I'm another of the Emory waitlisters, and have been offered a spot at Hebrew Union College (Hebrew Bible). I think I'd be happy at HUC, but Emory is the better program, with a better shot of opportunities on the other end of the PhD.

You should not feel bad at all for making the other program wait until April 15. They understand. They may be anxious to know, but if they adhere to the April 15 resolution that every program worth anything adheres to, then they're not going to hold it against you for waiting to hear about waitlists (they can't.) Like menge said, make the best decision for yourself. If you would choose one of the waitlists over the school you have an offer from, then wait and do not feel bad about it.

Just got a call from Baylor. He stated that out of the two Theology spots they have offered, one has been accepted (for those waitlisted in Theology at Baylor...)
