  1. @Schopenhauerfanboy Yes, of course, I only applied to those departments I thought would be a good fit for me. My problems are now 1) coming to terms with where that department is located and 2) what if the fact they admitted me is a fluke?! Though I do not want to doubt an adcom *Praise be to Adcoms*
  2. @Schopenhauerfanboy Since you use the phrase the "decision will be made for me," I'm curious how you (and anyone else) feels about that? I know there are a lot of factors to consider, but the possibility of the decision basically being made for me makes me nervous
  3. Awesome!! congrats!
  4. Completely serious here: This is the best thing I've seen on any of the forums. Something we should all strive for.
  5. I think it's about 1) doing the right extracurriculars, such as those you mentioned, and 2) marketing any extracurricular to show how it has provided you with the same skills one needs for a phil phD. In the same vein as applying to college the first time, liberal arts departments might be wary of someone who hasn't done anything with their time because, while much work is done independently, cooperative work within a department gives way to cohesion and creativity (both in the department itself and individual research). (edit) oops forgot to answer the question, so yes, I think they count for something. Perhaps they are used more as tie-breakers where GRE scores and writing samples are the make-it-or-break-its.

  15. One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were spreading throughout town. Nobody with pyromania thought grilled cheese would spontaneously erupt into nine identical squirrels! Nevertheless, the penguins elucidated the benefits of sparkling water from Iceland. Suddenly, Iceland exclaimed, "Enough!!! No more penguins. Kill all of the arcades on Monday because King Arthur suffered from sphenisciphobia." Tragically, everyone forgot lasers
