Bibica got a reaction from The0ry in Welcome to the 2016-17 cycle!
I wish I'd never found the results page. My SO also hates that I am constantly refreshing it, even on weekends lol.

Why should you feel guilty? You've worked hard and you've earned your acceptances. To me, there's nothing wrong with having pride in oneself until you use it to hurt other people. I don't see you doing that. If anyone interprets it that way, it's because they're feeling badly about themselves, which has nothing to do with you.
Without going on a full rant: the "humblebrag" accusations drive me batshit. If you've worked hard to be/get/do something, then you have every right to delight in that. What, are we never supposed to feel good about ourselves? Pssht. Go on, girl.

@nate3869, I would love to claim one of the Harvard acceptances, but they would need to send me one first Until it's been confirmed here, I'm sticking with the trolly-troll hypothesis.

I know man. Not pressing the up arrow button when someone's being an ass is some real Hedonic calculus.
For real though, here's an actual puzzle: what kind of person starts publicly sobbing about downvotes on a website called "the grad cafe" and then shits on someone who tries to answer their question about it?
Nah I just flip a coin.

Bibica got a reaction from Lalbadshah in Stanford PhD Stipend- sufficient?
I think you don't need to pay nearly that much to live in Stanford, but you'll need to keep yourself on a tight budget. First, are they paying for healthcare? If so, the highest cost estimate $38000, should be decreased by about $5,000. Second, you will hopefully get some more money for summer support. Let's say that brings you to $30,000. Next, there's no reason why you should be spending more than $50/week on food for a single person. For 52 weeks, you'll be spending $2,600 for food a year, not $7,760. Even if you want to give yourself a $3,500 food budget, as long as you don't eat out much that is MORE than manageable.
Rent is the largest expense. They have you at $16,440 a year (or $1,370 a month) for rent. It might be easier to find a place for less if you are willing to have roommates. Look on craigslist and network with current graduate students to see if you can find a room for $900 to $1200 a month.
It won't be easy, but learning how to budget is crucial for life as a graduate student.
EDIT: Do keep in mind that your stipend might be taxed. Talk to the financial aid office for information on that. California taxes are crazy high, relative to the rest of the US.

Just received the most concise rejection letter so far (JHU, via application portal): " Unfortunately your application into Ph.D. in Political Science has been denied. Political Science Department".

I know the intel says next week, but if Harvard could surprise us today, that'd be great.
At this point I almost miss the trolls.

And another Friday rolls around after another (for me) completely silent week.
If it wasn't for checking my applications every ten minutes I would think I hadn't actually submitted them!

Bibica got a reaction from changeisgood in Range of funding for PoliSci Programs
If it is a school that you're excited about attending, it is absolutely okay to haggle for more funding. Especially if you have an offer at another university that gives you more funding. I spoke to someone in my university who handles this sort of stuff and she said that they'll almost always give an extra $1000-3000 to someone who says that funding is preventing them from accepting.
Keep in mind that before they accepted you, you were trying to convince them. Now THEY'RE trying to recruit YOU. They've already decided that they want you, and that gives you some bargaining power. That being said, it is important to be polite about it, and it would definitely help if you visit first.

Bibica reacted to guest56436 in accurate ranking of top polisci programs
So you would rather trust prospective grad students opinions about something they haven't even experienced before rather than systematic surveys distributed to professors throughout the field?
Well all know there are flaws with ranking systems but nonetheless they have been shown to correlate fairly well with placement.

Mine too. I don't think it's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm thinking it just means they're done reviewing and we can expect a decision soon.
