  1. I no the sting. UNCG was my number 1 . I even drove to NC from NJ for a weekend to tour the campus and look at apartments to see if I could picture myself living in the area and my boyfriend and I both fell in love with NC. They got back to me and denied me. Said they loved meeting me but my GRE was too low and if I apply again next year that the rest of my application was impressive. All because a dumb standardized test. It really hurt, in fact I cried. But now thinking about it, it's for the best. I love the location more than the program itself. I know how you feel though because its pretty shitty. Try to keep your head up. We have about 2 to 3 more weeks to hear back from schools
  2. I just got this email today as well!! I hate SOPHAS!!!! But I would assume they'd interview us. However, it is worded in an obscure manner so I am not positive. I would call to check in on this but I am at work until 8pm :-(
  3. Yes!! Well I am not sure If they call and email, but I got a call at least :-) so I'd assume they call those who they will interview
  4. Got a call from Rutgers today!! Interviewing on the 27th!
  5. I read this book! It's amazing!!!!
  6. As long as it is In complete status you are fine! If does NOT need to be verified according to USF. I called and they said my SOPHAS was complete, even thought it still says verifying and the school said that is all they need. However, I never got any sort of confirmation when it went complete, like no email or anything, did you receive anything?
  7. Thank you! I'm a little bummed that all of my applications are submitted except 1 with the old personal statement. So fingers crossed that this new one will land me an interview!
  8. Thank you all so so much for your responses! I certainly elaborated on 2 specific shadowing experiences, however I think it was to "Dry" if that makes any sense, like it wasn't so exciting. I will certainly be making another edit on this statement before submitting my last application. I think I will add as well how I am a first generation college graduate and how I took a year off in order to gain experience in knowing how competitive the field is and most importantly to save 2 years worth of rent and bills so that I do not have to live off of loans. Saving money was important to me and not getting in any extra debt, as I grew up with not much money and at my families lowest point I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment with my mom and 2 sisters. I think my hardships has certainly motivated me to succeed and this is something I should talk about in my statement. I also debating discussing a program called" AVID". I was the first every south jersey class to be in AVID (we were a trial). It was a class meant for student not working to their abilities who needed extra guidance and tools, yet had potential to be successful students. I not only stuck with the program (it started when I was in 7th grade) but I also became the student representative of the program and had to deliver a number of speeches to the board of education on why they should continue to fund this program. Despite me being young when this all began, this program truly impacted how I am as a student and a person today. It gave me motivation and self confidence to be successful. On top of that I have so much pride in this program that I am working with a pediatric nurse practitioner to start a similar program for children in our area. I believe these are all things I should discuss that may make me stand out in my personal statement, rather than just "i love genetic counseling, and I no it from shadowing" hhaah. I think I need to discuss who I am and how I became so motivated and hard working and than lead into how my experiences verified my belief that this is the correct field for me. I just was hesistant to discuss the AVID program as it began in 7th grade...
  9. Hey Guys. Would any of you mind telling me how you formatted you personal statement? I know many schools had specific questions to be answered, but it's hard to not restate aspects of your resume (which they tell you not to do) when you are told you should talk about shadowing experiences. I had many people review my personal statement but I could still use some guidance considering I am putting in 1 more application and Incase I reapply next year. Hearing what other students did, especially those of you who are getting interviews, would be so much appreciated! Thanks!
  10. Did you study differently for the GRE? I am nervous that if I retake it I wont do much better; I am not a good standardized test taker. As for SOPHAS I would say contact the director of the GC program for assistance. If they cannot work with you, I know that you can call SOPHAS and ask for a refund and you fill out an application stating why you need a refund. I only know this because I had feared my transcripts would not be received in time either so I asked SOPHAS if they were not received if I could try to get a refund. Best of Luck. I also applied to Rutgers, so fingers crossed for us both there!
  11. Since you applied the last 2 years, did you receive feedback from any programs on why you weren't accepted? I am awaiting feedback from UNCG since I was rejected from them this year. I am nervous my GRE scores may keep me out of all programs but time will tell!
  12. My GRE scores are even more mediocre with a 144V/147Q/5 So don't be too hard on yourself haha. I am thinking if I do not get any interviews or acceptances this year I will certainly need to retake them. Best of luck to you!!!
  13. I am certainly into Prenatal as well! Before I settled on wanting to be a GC I was torn with reproductive medicine. I certainly want to deal with families and planning. I love learning about cancer as well though since it effects almost everybody to some degree, and has effected my life twice with people very close to me. Time will tell where we land :-)
  14. I applied to Rutgers and USF! SOPHAS was the death of me! I still didn't get confirmation from the school despite me having everything in. It was so expensive too!!! I'm just hoping I get an interview somewhere, even if I don't get in this year, an interview will give me good practice and some confidence. I no they give feedback if you get rejected so that's always nice. I am nervous my GRE scores will keep me out of every program this year despite my experience and GPA but time will tell!! Best of luck with SOPHAS, I submitted my transcripts on the 4th and it was just received on the 25th. They said from the day they receive the transcript, they have 12 business days to process it :-( hence why it took them so long.
  15. Yeah experience is certainly a huge component of this process I feel like. I also think the personal statement was a huge component. It's so hard to talk about yourself on 2-3 pages haha. Going to the NSGC's AEC is great!!! What a cool opportunity to have!
  16. That's great I'm excited for you!! Did you have a lot of shadowing experience? My GRE scores were poop (144v/147Q/5A) but my GPA was a 3.549. I hope to hear good news back from them but after my first denial I am super bummed and kind of lost all hope because of my scores
  17. Congratulations! Did they email you or call? If you don't mind me asking what were your GRE scores?
  18. Don't be hard on yourself, my first reply was a no to my number 1 school. Its crappy but we know how competitive this is. Many people have to apply more than 1 year sadly. But lets see what others schools say before giving up hope!
  19. What is the "unmatched applicant process" I actually never heard of this until this blog! Could you explain it to me please!
  20. Yeah It seems different for sure, but I was debating applying just as a "safe" school. But I am unsure. Does anyone know anything about U of South Florida? I did their application via SOPHAS (which is a money scam and awful!!) After paying to have my transcripts sent to SOPHAS they make you enter every single course and its code and grade your received anyway! OR you could pay $90 to have them enter it for you (on top of the $135 application fee for SOPHAS) and than I had to do a supplemental application for the specific genetic counseling program which cost an addition $35. 1 of my transcripts was sent on 1/4/17 and STILL not received. I'm getting so frustrated!
  21. Yeah, I've also heard mixed things about GRE scores, I just couldn't financially take it again so soon ( I took it in October). I have been working 2 jobs to put aside 2 years of rent money because I assume once in the program, we cannot hold a job in order to afford rent and I refuse to live off of loans. Luckily my Boyfriend of 4 years will move with me where ever I get accepted, so that will help with money, but saving money ASAP was my primary goal. If I do not get accepted anywhere this year, I do plan to retake the GRE. I have not seen Twice Born. Just looked it up though and it looks awesome!
  22. Hey Guys. Late to the thread but wanted to talk with other nervous applicants. I have a BS in Biology and minor in Psychology I was a research assistant for 1 semester in a psychology lab Graduated Cum Laude with a 3.549 GPA. My GRE scores made me cry except my writing which was a 93% (I had a 144 verbal and 147 math). I shadowed at CHOP (neurology and metabolism clinics) and at MD Anderson cancer center. I had lunch with 2 cancer genetic counselors from Virtua hospital. I have volunteered at a crisis hotline just over a year now. I have worked for an Endocrinologist for the past year as well. This Is my first year applying. I applied to U North Carolina Greensboro, U South Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth, U South Florida, Rutgers, and Arcadia. I heard back from my top school today (UNCG) and did not get accepted :-(. Waiting on the others with my fingers crossed. Has anyone looked into the BayPath Genetic Counseling program? It's new but it's the only program I've seen where most of it is online; seems strange for a Genetic counseling program and I was wondering if anyone applied to them or has much information on them ? Their program doesn't begin until October! So Far: Applied: 6 Rejected (1/6): UNCG Interview(0/6):
