  1. Hi everyone. I also would be happy to share any advice or help in any way with people considering applying for programs next cycle, in particular if you are someone like me with a nontraditional, non-biology or genetics background (my degree is in English!). I was accepted to 4 programs this cycle and was wait listed at a 5th, which was all of the programs that I interviewed with. This process was definitely at times overwhelming and I appreciated this forum in not feeling isolated during this process, as I am a few years out of college so didn't have friends going through similar things at the same time. I did not have extensive lab experience or shadowing experiences, but was focused on highlighting my strengths and focusing on what I was able to bring to the table, and think being able to create this narrative was really important. I don't know how often I will be checking in here over the next year, but if you are reading this in the ~future~, please feel free to PM me and that will send an alert to my email. Good luck to everyone!
  2. Thanks everyone who joined the FB group so far! I am having trouble adding people, but if you search for 'Genetic Counseling Class of 2019' it should come up now!
  3. Awesome! Configuring it now and will add you guys in a few!
  4. Hey everyone! So glad again to hear that waitlists have showed some movement and that so many people will be starting in the Fall! I saw that there was a Facebook group for the Class of 2017 with students from all different programs where they were able to share articles and resources, meetup at NSGC events, etc and was interested in creating one for our year! I created one for the Class of 2019, but Facebook will not let me publish the group until I add at least one other person to it - womp. But if anyone is interested in joining, send me a PM and I can add you and then people can search for us!
  5. Hey Everyone!! Congratulations to all those getting spots today =) This morning was a total blur of emotions. I turned down a position at Brandeis earlier today (I really loved this program, but the move to Boston just wasn't ideal for me with all the other factors). I am currently deciding between two other programs - both great opportunities, but very different in terms of cost which is making me want to take a little bit of time to decide. I plan on sleeping on it and letting the programs know first thing tomorrow - since it is a major decision and one that I was waiting on financial information on. I would imagine that waitlists would have a lot of activity in the morning for this reason. Thank you to everyone here for all of the support and encouragement throughout this process! I am so, so excited for the next 2 years.
  6. @GCInTraining, that is awful! Glad you are ok. What is everyone doing today? I had a bachelorette party last night, but had the foresight to drink a lot of water and stop for empanadas on my way home, so feeling pretty good today! I think I am going to run to the grocery store and try to bake something today - will keep me busy, and also get a snack at the end, so win win. I also thought about going to see a movie in the theatre for a few hours of not being able to check my phone or think about things.
  7. Out of curiosity, how many people's rankings were different before/after interviews? For me, I had 5 interviews -- my #1 choice going into applications is still my #1, but the others definitely moved around based on more intangibles that I maybe hadn't considered initially. That being said, I would be thrilled to go to any of the places I visited. I think that's what is making this hard - I really liked them all, and I also am afraid of thinking too much about 'ranking' and setting myself up for disappointment on Monday if it turns out that this cycle doesn't work at at all. I am trying to just keep an open mind and see how things go, but that is easier said than done!
  8. Hi - congrats on the job offer! That is very exciting and I'm sure relieves some of the stress of this application cycle. That is definitely a tough question. If I can ask, what is it that makes your 'dream school' a 'dream school' for you? And is it the 'dream program,' or the college itself that you have had a lifelong interest in? Understanding what it is that appeals to you about this program in particular might help in providing advice! Is it a school you applied to this cycle?
  9. Anyone who has been to Brandeis already have any tips on places to stay, or impressions from the interview? Was hoping to stay an extra night and explore but I don't know that I can afford an extra night in Boston right now after all of the other traveling. Agreed that this board has been really helpful in just being able to check in with other people going through the same thing!
  10. Just received an interview offer at Maryland! There are 5 dates to choose from, all in March. So excited about this program!
  11. Thanks for sharing this link! A lot to explore here. =) I also love Jodi Picoult - Handle with Care and Nineteen Minutes were my favorites. I have not read the newer one that you mentioned, will probably download that today! TY for the tip
  12. Jenny, I also took the USC online class and found it incredibly helpful and interesting! I felt like it gave a good 'range' of topics that I might not otherwise have bumped into or been exposed to at this point. The support work that you do with grieving children sounds incredibly difficult and important - kudos for taking the time to help support others make sense of a difficult time. I keep checking this board and my email out of nervousness! I also need to download a new book for my kindle. Anyone reading anything good at the moment or have any recommendations? Bonus points if it is somewhat GC-related! I typically prefer non-fiction, but am open to anything.
  13. I visited the SLC campus, and it is definitely not a 'big city' feel at all - it is actually located north of NYC and is in a very beautiful town. I suppose its all relative as I am from a city lol, and also know that many rotations for them do take place in NYC and metro areas, but the location of the campus itself is very open and green and outside of the bustle.
