  1. Hey guys! I've been lurking on here (and probably will still be on here until the semester starts in August - it gives me something to do while at work haha) and I figured I'd help out with some questions:

@AspiringGC Here's how I worded my email to Emory when I initially received my denial:

"I just received my denial from Emory for the Genetic Counseling Training Program, and I was wondering if you could tell me what areas my application needed strengthening in. I realize my submitted GRE scores were low, but I recently retook the GRE and have attached my new scores. If you could advise me on whether or not I should retake it once more, I would appreciate that, as well as any other feedback you can provide me with. Thank you!"

I was pretty sure it was my GRE scores that caused me to not receive an interview, but they were pretty receptive to that email.

@TAGC In terms of the pre reqs - I do think you'll have to take both Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. I graduated back in 2013 with my undergrad degree and got a master's degree in 2015 (similar to you, @Sunshine99! my Master's is in Pharmacogenetics!), and during undergrad I only took Organic Chem I and II. Because of that, I had to take Biochemistry this past fall, and enrolled at my undergrad university as a non-degree seeking student to take both Biochem and Psychology.

@GeneDawg what you have so far sounds amazing! I'm sure you'll get in somewhere!

@dragongc10 I have an MSc in Pharmacogenetics and Stratified Medicine, which I believe definitely helped me get into a GC program. If you still intend to get an MPH after getting your GC degree, then I'd say go ahead and do it. However, I would keep in mind the cost of these degrees, lol. Let's just say I'm in a ton of debt right now from undergrad and my MSc, and although I would never regret going to London for that MSc, I also wish I had discovered the field of genetic counseling before getting that MSc. Just a bit of advice =)

I am wondering the same thing!!

From what I have heard, they are going to implement drug development/response topics into their curriculum, but still have regular clinical rotations in peds, prenatal, and cancer!  I found an article where they talk about their goals for the program.  I will try to find it and send it to you!  I think pharmacogenetics is super interesting.  I haven't heard of genetic counselors who have practiced in this specific field, but who knows. I am sure they are out there!

Hey guys! Sorry, I'm lurking around here to see if I could be of any help - but I have a master's degree in pharmacogenetics! so I was discussing with all of the programs about ways to add pharmacogenetics into the curriculum! I'm so excited to know that I'm not the only one with this idea!!

the hospital near me with a GC dept doesn't allow shadowing. They're apparently starting a small one at another hospital in town, so pray for me they'll let me see. That should strengthen my application for next year.

can you sign up at the hospital as a volunteer and then just volunteer in the GC Dept? That's what I had to do - I was technically a hospital volunteer but the GC allowed me to sit in on sessions and do paperwork and stuff.

I'm disappointed to hear we wont be classmates!  SLC was a great school though, and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it there!

I'm sure we'll cross paths somewhere! I was emailing Deborah and she was really nice about everything - I told her I'm definitely coming home to central FL  to start my career, and she said to contact her in the future for job prospects and I should come to the FL GC Meeting in the Spring (which I might just do, if it's during Spring Break!). =) I'm happy for you though - and excited for USF's inaugural class!

Who's still waitlist locked? Who has an offer but is waiting for their top school?

USF only has one spot left and 3 people ahead of me on the waitlist, so I highly doubt I'll get in...but I can't help but have some hope. I'm waiting until 1pm to accept my offer at SLC.

  6. @GCFaith92 SLC is def #2 - I honestly didn't feel positive vibes from Rutgers when I interviewed. I know the school is great and the program seems good, but I wasnt too happy about it. USF just had all the right things for both personal and academic reasons - I'm tempted to just turn down other offers (if I get them) and reapply to USF next year =/ Blah. This sucks. I already ate all the chocolate in my house. I wonder if there's ice cream somewhere. Might have to move onto the hard stuff tomorrow and buy some wine...

  7. @GCFaith92 She said I was in like, the top 1/3? So I guess that's good, lol. I figured if they interviewed around 24 people, and accepted 6 of them, that would mean there are 18 people waiting so I'd be somewhere in the top 6 which isn't too bad. Trying to stay positive lol.

@Ellaie Aww congrats!! I hope I get in too - if not, you'll definitely be seeing me there next year during interviews lol =) I refuse to give up!

  8. @Ellaie I might be biased here since I really want your spot at USF (lol) - but I moved to London for my first Master's degree, for a year, and it was the best year of my life. My heart aches to be there every day. If I wasn't in debt from that move, I would have probably considered applying to Cali or one of the schools in Canada. But if you have the $$ and the opportunity, the program is less than two years - it's not too long to be away. And you could always try to get rotations in Florida. Just my input. =)

Also - I've been waitlisted at all 3 schools - SLC, Rutgers, and USF. Idk how I'm going to get through these next two days. My boyfriend said to save my tears for Wednesday, if need be -_-

  9. Do you guys know what to do if we can't find an interviewer's email address to send them a thank you email? I've searched everywhere online, all I could find was a LinkedIn and the other two I can't find at all =/

Also, has anyone started getting the rejection nightmares? I had one last night...it involved UFO's on an island and strange interviewers who didn't like me  13 days until match day!!!
