I think I am going! I think its good to go to at least learn about the program and even if you're waitlisted they can put a name to a face.

Oh wow, I just saw your reply. I actually just made the impromptu decision to RSVP just now for the same reason lol Trying to figure out in my head what's the appropriate attire

I've been waiting to hear back since people got accepted this week and my heart skipped a beat when I saw that I got an email from Hofstra but it was asking me to attend an open house ..?

YEP. Saaaame here. Smh. That's why I'm wondering if going to the open house will up my chances of getting in if they meet me or something ??

@SpeechLaedy I was actually really nervous cause it was my first and only interview with a grad program so I prepared a lot but they ended up asking nothing speech related except asking me how I got to where I was. Group interview, was really relaxed, and was asked questions that came up at the moment (and totally not speech related AT ALL) cause I guess they wanted to see how quick/creative you can be with your answers.. Not sure how it went cause I kind of feel like I was overshadowed by this one girl but just hoping for the best.

Did you find out if you got the call?

I actually ended up double checking the QC online application the day you told me they call for decisions and saw that I actually put down my cell! So I'm happy I won't have to worry about my parents not getting the message to me when they call. Thanks so much for all that great info about the interview process! Hopefully I'll get an acceptance or at least a chance to interview there. I love that school since I graduated from there. So I'm hoping they will give me the chance to stay. Good luck to you!! Hoping you get in!!

@SpeechLaedy Ugh I'm sorry! Don't beat yourself up though, the CUNYs are damn near impossible to get into. Plenty of people with amazing stats get rejected every year. I haven't heard back from the two I applied to either and didn't get asked to interview.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks! I'm trying not to. At the same time, I'm starting to prepare a backup plan just in case (praying I won't need to go through with it). I def hope we get an acceptance soon!

  4. So far I got rejected to 2 out of 8 schools and had one interview (no decision made from that one yet). I'm getting that knotty feeling in my stomach after getting the second rejection today. This waiting game is awful, especially when all you're getting so far is rejection. Really praying to get some better news as time goes on. My backup plan is to apply to schools for the Advanced Certificate in ABA since I planned on getting that anyway. My stats are average but based on the relationship I had with my professors, I can only assume that I have strong LOR. And I think my personal statement really showed my passion for the field. So idk. I'm going through all kinds of emotions now smh ??

Yeah I'm definitely liking it right now. I had to survive off the school computer lab for a few months so I definitely don't mind having to do that again if something is not compatible with it! It's also super lightweight which is a plus if you're having to commute by bus or walking across a decent size campus

Unbeknownst to me (until right AFTER I bought my laptop of course), there were laptops students were able to rent on my campus. I'm not exactly sure how it worked but it may be something worth looking into for some of you especially if you have to walk a lot. My back definitely deteriorated a bit from 3 yrs of carrying my books + my Toshiba Satellite laptop (which I obviously would NOT recommend).

  6. Ugh. Got my first official response from a school and it's a rejection (from Lehman College). I had a feeling it would be anyway though since I didn't get the chance to emphasize the importance one of the faculty had in my decision to become an SLP. I think if I had done that, I would've at least had a shot. Anyway, ah well. 7 more to go... praying for some acceptance(s) ??

  7. Yeap. I had an hour commute coming home from Queens College most of the time, although going there was usually less than half of that. But the hour drive was usually fine for me; irritating at times, but bearable since I blasted my music and had snacks handy. I applied to schools in Brooklyn which would be 2 hrs away in traffic (and I live on Long Island) so as much as I would HATE that commute, I may be in the position where I have to consider it.

  8. The video makers of Magoosh have a FREE WEBSITE with ALL THE SAME VIDEOS that for Magoosh are only available if you pay for it!! The site is GreenLightTestPrep.com. They also have the same videos on YouTube but I find that the website organizes them nicely and keeps track of which videos you've already watched, plus has added content/supplemental materials worth checking out.

  9. CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP! i JUST realized awhile ago that I forgot to send my interviewer a thank you email following my interview from almost two weeks ago! Smh! I actually need to ask her a question that is not pertaining to the interview or graduate admissions at all though, so would it be appropriate to still contact her with a thank you as a preface to my question, even though there's a good chance she probably has forgotten my face/background info? What I am emailing her about may jog her memory, but is it too late to mention any thanks for the interview at this point??

I would go if you were invited! It would be a chance to meet the professors so they can put a face to your name. Will you be hearing from them before the open house?

I honestly have no clue! Some people have already been notified about decisions from Adelphi but I haven't yet. The open house is in May so it's possible that my decision will be out by then..

I remember! I actually remember your name too.

What are your thoughts about the whole interview? I thought it was weird and really have no idea what they will base of on.

That's really funny that you guys ended up in the same interview! ? I was wondering if that would happen with me during my interview but the people I spoke to didn't even hear of this site lol

It's kind of a made-up title that they give us - no certification required. I think it's okay because we're not "pathologists." We go through a phonemic awareness training program before starting, but that's it. I feel like it must be like being an SLPA, but maybe with less supervision at times (I'm not sure if that's true...). Our directors are a neurologist and neuropsychologist and I have an SLP supervisor. I work with children and young adults with developmental language and behavioral disorders one-on-one. I also get to decide the treatment plan for one student at all times under lots of supervision. It's really cool because I get to see the medical, psychological, behavioral, and language pieces in play with the help of so many experts. I feel like I'm in school at all times - my old coworker who is in SLP school at MGH actually said that grad school is way less stressful than this job, ha ha. I don't think this job exists anywhere else for untrained people like me and I am grateful I found it! I don't think I could have gotten into school without it!

Woah. That sounds like great experience though! What state are you in?

I graduated with my B.A. 5 years ago. I switched majors from nursing to English. SLP had been a looming career idea since I had been a kid, but it took me a long time to figure out that it was absolutely the right thing - I also take forever to make decisions and have to research things until they die. I settled on SLP or OT and I somehow, MAGICALLY, found my current job working as a language therapist (after working totally unrelated jobs, like for a policy office of the Governor's Office in Utah). This is my first year applying. I wasn't even going to apply because of my GPA and because of all of the disappointing stories I heard around my office of people not getting in. I planned on giving it a shot but fully planned on doing a post-bacc next year. I have been taking one class at a time to fulfill the ASHA prereqs, studying and taking the GRE, completing applications, etc. after work. I am SO lucky and grateful that I got in this round. I am so ready and excited to be a passionate SLP!

What is the difference between being a language therapist and an SLP? I've never heard of a language therapist before

I posted this in another thread, but for SFSU the group consisted of 6 applicants and 3 faculty. For 15 minutes we were given a scenario, and asked to work as a team to discuss the scenario, then spend 5 minutes reaching a group conclusion. That was the entire interview, haha.

    Woah. How nerve-wracking was that??!

Hey, would you mind sharing your interview experience with Post? What was the process like and what kind of questions did they ask? How long did it take?

Interview took about 15 min. Dr. Rubinstein was great and actually told us who were waiting exactly what to expect for the interview, which I assume she may do for you or anyone else if there's a bunch of people waiting to be interviewed. So I'll tell you the same thing she said to us. You'll basically give her a brief overview of your educational experience since she knows absolutely nothing about anyone she interviews. Then you'll have to talk a bit in depth about ONE clinical observation. After, you can ask her whatever questions you may have. And then if your writing score is below a 4.0, you have to write a one page essay about a pretty easy topic related to your personal experience. They just want to make sure you can write well. But Dr. Rubinstein was an absolute joy to speak to. She makes you feel really comfortable ?

It was quick! The interviewer asked me to talk about myself, and then asked me a clinical scenario question. She then went on to ask my GPA's and GRE's. I did not have a writing assignment. I told her I scored a 5.0 both times I took the GRE- not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Nice! Yeah, it did have to do with your AW score. I hear that those who score 4.0 and up don't have to write anything. So it's good you never had to do that! Good luck!
