  1. If you don't mind me asking, how did you receive notification? - Also, thanks @Gotya64 and @luz.colorada for the positive vibes. I'm not feeling very optimistic, but discussing everything with my cohort as just shown me that this whole application process is full of surprises!
  2. Well . . . this is a little disheartening. I would have just preferred that they told me that was the situation. The email specifically said that they don't discuss admissions decisions by email or by phone, too. I doubt I'm on a waitlist, if it does exist, based off of my application record, but I would really appreciate not getting the runaround like this.
  3. Finally broke down and emailed NYU and just received a response. Admissions go out by snail mail, and unfortunately the email is no more precise than saying that admissions are made at the end of February and that decisions go out in mid-to-late March.
  4. Feel free! I learned a bit about the department and Charlottesville while I was there, and already had a little familiarity with the area through family that used to live in the region.
  5. Myself, and two others in my cohort, received rejections from Chicago at the same time yesterday. Maybe you're on an unofficial waitlist? I suspect that's the case for me with OSU, maybe. I feel you on that! I just want to go ahead and know so I can make my summer plans for sure. On that note, though I attended the UVA prospective students "weekend" the 26th-28th, so if you have any questions about that I may be able to help.
  6. Anyone else still waiting on results? I have yet to hear back from three schools still, and am eager to know what's going on. When is it acceptable to email and ask? I'd like to know what kind of living arrangements I should be making!
  7. I was never contacted for an interview at all, this is the first I'm hearing about it. Guess I didn't even make first cut. Oh well, another one to cross off the list.
  8. I am. It seems that they notified some people of acceptance/waitlist a few weeks back but nothing since then, unfortunately.
  9. I believe it is four for the GRE as well, but, yes, they must all be sent right when you take the exam.
  10. Yeahhh. I really, really dislike ETS because if you check a certain box they can even sell your name to schools for advertising purposes. I think everyone who applied to PhD programs in my cohort spent upwards of $1200 on apps when everything was said and done. I cried tears of joy for every program that said they accepted unofficial transcripts.
  11. I wish they all used something like Common App so you could just send one copy of transcripts/GRE scores. I understand needing to fund administration costs/etc. for applications, and it does make people a little more selective about where to apply, but I really really wish that I hadn't had to spend ~300 JUST on sending GRE scores out!
  12. Oops, missed your reply at first! It was a very interesting paper to write, I wish I'd kept up a little better on the topic. I'm in a very similar boat though--so far I'm only in at UVA, waiting to hear back from a variety of other places, but its looking like UVA is going to be it for me. I'm starting to get nervous about the apartment/roommate finding process!
  13. Hey everyone! I've got a question this time around--when is it appropriate to email a program and ask about your application status? I have a friend who has heard back from OSU with a rejection, but I was under the impression they'd already sent acceptances out. My portal is still telling me its "pending" and I'm going crazy. I also have a POI at my only acceptance asking me if I have any other offers. He seems very eager to know, so it's making me a little nervous that I don't have any updates to give him. I know he's probably just trying to get a sense of where I stand, but still!
  14. Oh, that sounds like something to look forward to! I'm excited to meet everyone and look around town a bit! We should stay in touch though! Are you in anywhere else? Interesting! I took a Modern Middle East class back in undergrad and wrote a paper on Israel-Palestine and bilingual schools, but I haven't kept up much with the field since then. I'm in Russian history, I'd like to focus a little bit more on Imperial Russia than I have so far, but I currently straddle the Imperial-Soviet line.
  15. I know they're reimbursing for some travel, but I know not everyone may have the upfront cash for accommodations, so I thought I'd offer! What is your field of study?
  16. Is anyone else who was admitted to UVA going to the prospective students days? If so, I have an extra bed in the Airbnb that I've booked that I can offer up!
  17. Has anyone else been put on a mailing list for the institutions they applied to? I keep getting emails from the American University with titles like buzzwords like "Graduate Student Enrollment" or "Welcome" (granted, these aren't the full titles). I keep seeing them and getting my hopes up for some kind of answer, only to immediately be let down! I have already heard back from one school, but the radio silence from everywhere else is killing me. All of my colleagues have already heard back from at least two to three of their programs and I've seen some admissions/rejections from all of the programs I've applied to up on the survey. Granted, I take it that no news from Columbia is bad news at this point, but I'm still holding out a little hope for the others.
  18. I was playing Overwatch with friends on a Friday night! I actually received an email to create an account on the University's website and I hastily did so, hoping that maybe admission decisions were posted. I left my friends hanging in the middle of a game to do that, but couldn't find anything--I just assumed it was the same kind of fake out I had had a week prior with a different school. Later on, I was messing with my headset and mic because they weren't working properly and I was on my computer looking for possible answers when the acceptance email popped up!
  19. I wonder if it's worth altering these depending on days of the week--I got my first acceptance at 10:56pm on a Friday night!
  20. Sorry if I was vague, my current emphasis is on non-Jewish emigres (mostly socialites/artistic figures that ended up in Paris), but were I to extend further back into the Imperial Era I may end up looking at Russian Jews more--that may depend on what program I end up at and my linguistic capacity. I distinguished between the two only because the exodus of Russian Jews is largely disconnected from my current research. At the doctoral level, I'm interested in stepping outside of high culture and elites more than I've been able to do so far. I'm incredibly interested in shifting my focus outside of ethnic Russians in high society. I am particularly interested in looking more towards Ukraine and the various borderlands in that region. That's one reason I'm gunning so hard for Chicago--I'd love to work with Faith Hillis. It's looking less optimistic, though.
  21. Congrats on Columbia! It was a reach for me, but I was still hoping. I'm happy for everyone who received an acceptance, though! And thanks for the info--I hear that is the story in a lot of places. I know OSU has drastically cut their intake. I was on the Graduate Studies Committee last semester at my school and heard that generally, application numbers are much lower, but that schools are also accepting fewer.
  22. True! That comment was mostly referring to NYU, who came back around the end of January last year. And it seems that some of Chicago's decisions have gone out unofficially, but the dead silence is making me nervous. I am glad that Columbia seems to send acceptances/rejections out around the same time. Being in the limbo of am I in or out, when at least some admittees seem to know, is probably the worst part for me.
  23. Ahhh, she's my POI, too. Although to be honest, Columbia Dr. Evtuhov is less of a good fit for my topic, than the fact that they have the Bakhmeteff. Unfortunately, I'm about 20 years too late to catch Marc Raeff, who wrote the book that inspired much of my thesis. Thus far, my research has been early 20th Century as I've been focusing on the emigres who fled the Revolution, but I'd like to reach back a little further into Imperial Russian history. I've been largely restricted to writing about high culture in Western Europe because of the available sources and resources. Unfortunately, not much funding to go abroad for my M.A. thesis. Your topic sounds very interesting! Any particular type/field of scientific exchange? (And congrats again on the offer!)
  24. My subfield would be Modern Europe/International & Global History. I'm primarily a Russianist, but I've been studying and am writing my thesis on non-Jewish Russian emigres in Western Europe. I'm looking at expanding my research to include themes of migration and displacement more generally, though.
  25. Good to know, thanks for the info! I've gotten one acceptance, but it's still killing me to wait and hear back from others (especially ones that I should have heard back from already, based on last year's stats)!
