I'm currently thinking about this, because (for fear of sounding like an ungrateful snozzberry) the place I'm currently accepted comes several choices down on my list, behind for instance a place I was waitlisted at last year (and so I know that theoretically I could get in) and that's my #1 choice. On the one hand, there's this lil voice that's like "BUT...if that #1 place doesn't work out, you could take post-grad classes, get a relevant job for a year, don't let anxiety and stress make you rush part XYZ of the app process, and MAYBE get into the #1 place..... But echoing what @WildeThing said, that's probably not a voice that should win out. Realistically, I know the school I got accepted to will still be a good one if not my #1 choice, and a large factor in what's driving this little voice is just classic FOMO. I also fully stand by the sentiment that things you never knew you wanted might surprise you in a good way. (And if literally all else fails...transferring isn't totally out of the possibility. I had a peer who got accepted to UPitt's PhD, attended, found it wasn't the best fit, and transferred to NYU's, the professors helping them out because they knew the person would find more personal success there.)

2018 venting thread

Unrelated vent -- I must have checked the box in the GRE that gives schools my email (past me, why?!) because I'm getting endless emails from schools warning me my application deadline is near, my fees are waived, etc, none of which I actually applied to or have an interest in. This wasn't so big of a deal a couple months ago, but now each new one in my inbox gives me a teeny heart attack! -

Oh my gosh You'd think they'd have someone keeping track of these things so they wouldn't rub salt in the wound?? Oi. Or better yet -- take the money (thanks for the offer Harvard, lol) and abscond with it elsewhere! -
Nope, I personally don't think so! Offering to cover additional costs is a good step to take. In a weird hard-to-explain story, I was having dinner with a UPenn professor who's often doing admissions, and she said that the time between when they accept you and you accept them should be the funnest time for admits, because it's when the school basically wants to court you for your favor

Popping in to ask this before wondering about it breaks my brain If a school you're admitted to asks to talk in person on the phone, to explain the financial package you're getting and to answer any questions about the department as a whole, are you supposed to enter into this with questions prepared? And what sorts of questions might that be? (The ones I'm thinking up seem somehow adversarial, ie/ if they have any particular student groups for my field, how often classes in the time period are offered, etc? They feel almost inappropriately specific?) Any help here would be appreciated!

2018 Acceptances

That's amazing -- glad to hear this! I might take you up on this offer in the weeks to come! <3 -
Just want to say on this front that I wouldn't count UCR out! Taking a look back at their results, they notify over a stretch of nearly a week! Also, in the few exchanges I had with the person who contacted me, they said they're trying to expand the amount of people in the cohort who work in earlier time periods, which I'm sure 1500s would count as! Hope is not lost! <3

I'm also stressing about this haha! For the latter two at least, they usually have a gooood few more acceptances than are up right now. UCR looks like it historically notifies over the course of a week. It seems like Davis usually has a couple more acceptances than this, but it might just be that the dispersal of acceptees posting on GradCafe is down this year...they do do it by phone call (I assume from a POI?) though, so I imagine there's a degree of fluctuation there, based on what area people are working in? UCSB also has a few more but I'm super puzzled because they seem staggered this year when in previous years it's all been at once. Someone in one of the other topics said they had intel that UCSB would be notifying (or maybe in this case, done notifying?) until the end of February. UGH! As you can tell, I spend too much time thinking about this To answer the question you initially asked though, probably yes on UCR and UCD, possibly not on UCSB?

2018 Acceptances

I wasn't the one yesterday, but I got an acceptance from UC Riverside yesterday too! Related to this, I'm such an applicant noob that I have nooooo idea what to say to them when I call in person to talk about the financial package. Email just said that she'd love to talk in person to explain the financial support and answer questions about the department as a whole -- first part is self-explanatory but are there things I should be asking in the second? Currently my brain is just making a dumb buzzing noise -

Yeww, congrats! That's where I got my master's (english & creative) so let me know if you have questions! (Does your username indicate you're a Spenser fan? Taking The Faerie Queene with Susanne Wofford was one of the best....classes....ever! ) -
Not all heroes wear capes! Hahah, sometimes pessimism seems to be a safer way to guard our tender hearts! But 1) BIG CONGRATS, and 2) thanks for this info! That does seem definitely possible -- I'm medieval, so makes sense! (Sidebar: there's got to be a better way to lay claim to studying middle ages lit than saying "I'm medieval" /dead) You've both bolstered my spirits a bit!

Is anyone else stupidly holding out hope for a non-rejection from University of Oregon, based on the fact that the couple results that came in yesterday are a few weeks ahead of their usual, and past admissions seem to span 3 or so days? Tell me I'm not the only stupidly-optimistic-against-all-odds person here (Even so, this felt most appropriate to post in projected rejections :/ )

I'm going to guess this Friday/Saturday for UCLA! That seems to be their pattern. (I noticed you applied to UCSB btw...AGHHH my top choice!) Meanwhile, I know this is crazytalk but I am KICKKINGGGGG myself over only applying to schools who start notifications of all sorts in the second full week of February!! *grumble gurmble* (Minus the predictable Stanford rejection LOL)
