  1. I heard that CU Anschutz in Colorado is particularly geared towards pediatrics from a GC on their admissions committee. Also, OSU has specific cardiology specialty (in addition to the usual curriculum), which is a little harder to find. When I went to interview there, one of the second year students said that her first job out was going to include working on the cardiology GC curriculum at another school (but I cannot remember which school for the life of me). I probably won't make any solid decisions about preference until after I've visited/interviewed, though, because my preferences will probably change. Also, if anyone has any questions about the area around either CU Anschutz or UC Irvine, feel free to PM me. I've lived near both
  2. Thank you for all of these program updates! They are super helpful! I also want to point out that some locations might be easier to fly home from than others. I mean, I can fly home from UTHouston for a weekend for like $150 the last time I looked. Flying into a major airline hub might be easier/more cost effective than driving across a few states...
  3. Hi guys! I am finally ready to think about applying for the second year--I stayed off the forum for my own sanity for the last couple of months. Last year, I applied to seven schools, and interviewed at OSU. I did not get in, but interviewing was a really positive experience. A little about me: I have a BS is psychology, and I've been involved in a bit of psychology research. My school actually requires upper level psych students to break into small groups and run their own experiments. I also interned for a summer with a psychiatrist who was involved in a major clinical trial. Unfortunately, my undergraduate GPA is looowwww (2.87) due to some health problems my last two years. I took a few years off to regroup, and then discovered genetic counseling. Since then, I've taken another 5 classes (plus labs!) to cover my pre-reqs and managed to average a 3.76 in those classes. My GRE scores were fantastic in verbal section, and good enough in the quantitative and writing sections. Unfortunately, it has now been 5 years, so my scores have expired. I'm currently studying to retake it (sigh). I've also been on an advocate on a local sexual assault crisis hotline for the past 2 years. I've spoken to a few GCs, but I have not gotten a chance to shadow. I'm hoping to change that soon, though. I recently found out that a lab with six gc's is literally right down the street (I just moved to another state), and I've just reached out to a gc who started referring to my mom (a therapist) a few months ago. Up until recently, I was working for a group of registered dietitians, and often did the initial intake and scheduling. Over the next few months, I'll be retaking the GRE, and I've enrolled in a Human Anatomy class. It's recommended, not required by a few schools. I figured it also couldn't hurt to continue to show that I'm continuing to do well academically. Also, I'm staying on the crisis hotline from my old town...they route directly to your cell phone, so it doesn't really matter that I've moved. And because of the move, I'm back on the job market. I've been specifically seeking behavioral interventionist jobs implementing in-home services for children with autism and developmental delays. I had an interview last week, and I think it went well!
  4. There's six students accepted each year. I talked to a GC on their admissions committee, and she said that they were oriented towards pediatrics more than any other specialty. That being said, there's a ton of really cool research being done on the Anschutz medical campus. Also, I realized that a few of the applicants I've spoken to did not realize that the medical campus is not technically in Denver--it's in the neighboring city in Aurora (which has both pluses and minuses).
  5. So true! My only shot is OSU, and I dreamt last night that they called me. Except whoever called me mumbled every time they told me the decision. In the dream, I ended the call and still had no closure. It was terrible! And I actually have a solid Plan B if I need to reapply next year! I'm not worried about the decision at all! I JUST WANT TO KNOW!!!!
  6. Ahahaha I grew up in Southern California...I googled the same thing when I first had to interview for jobs in Denver. Most people will wear a big coat, then slip it off once they get inside. And it's ok if the coat doesn't match the rest of your outfit as long as it is clean (a concern I had initially). If there is a larger group, they'll likely have a place to stash your coat during the interview.
  7. I have the same problem, and I cannot recommend these bandages enough: http://www.target.com/p/band-aid-heal-blister-bandages-6-count/-/A-14517967 You can pop them on at the first sign that your ankle is getting torn up. Not only do they prevent further damage, but they're stiff enough that continuing to walk in those shoes won't be a problem! And they're skin tone-ish, so they won't show too much through tights!
  8. Thank you for the info! I'm pretty sure I'm going to take the class, but right now it is more a question of when. This helps a lot!
  9. I remembered that some of you previously wrote about the Clinical Embryology online course from the University of Cincinnati, and I've been having a hard time finding information about it. I was thinking about taking it, maybe over the summer if it is possible. Is there a set schedule, or is it more of an asynchronous, go-at-your-own-pace online course? How long does it take to complete the course? Are there weekly readings, assignments, or quizzes? I just thought I'd ask while folks are checking the board more frequently!
  10. Personally, I think the cardigan could work. I may be biased because I was planning on wearing a cardigan. The one I have is a bit of a heavier knit and has a little structure to it. But I've definitely worn something what's in that picture for job interviews and gotten the job (as well as compliments for my clothing after I was hired). However, I think the girl in the picture is wearing too much jewelry for an interview. I would keep it simple. I want my interviewers to be focusing on me and not my outfit!
  11. As cringe-worthy as some of these are...I don't think I've seen anything worse than this:
  12. Thank you for the info. I can start breathing again! I have three schools where I still don't know if I will be offered an interview or not. With my spotty academics during undergrad, I honestly have no idea if I'm a decent candidate or a super long shot. These next few weeks will tell me a lot about my standing, so I'm kind of a wreck right now.
  13. Another person on the wait list here...must be a HUGE wait list...I'll put my results in the correct tab shortly! In any case, I'm new here. I just found this website today, and I really wish I had found it earlier! My boyfriend is tired of hearing about grad school My undergrad GPA was really crappy (I think I saw a GPA twin earlier with the same stunning 2.87). However, I have a 3.9 at the school I'm taking some post-bacc courses at, so that should help. I had some health issues during my undergrad, which I explained in my personal statement. I'm sure I'll be up against some skepticism that I'm ready to take on a master's program. But hey, I have one interview already and I have not heard from three programs yet. Speaking of which...I noticed that some interview invites have gone out for the University of Texas. Does anyone know if there are still more waves of invites to come? Lastly, I live in Denver and grew up 20 minutes south of UC Irvine (and still visit my parents there regularly). If anyone has any questions about either of those places, ask away!
