  1. Hi, I got accepted into two programs I was rejected the previous cycle. I used the same GRE, and your GRE scores is better than mine (V157 Q158 AWA 5.0). What I did different this time was to contact POI. I wrote a research proposal that helped me to find out what I wanted to do in the field I am interested. The exercise of design a research proposal helped me to be able to state what I am interested and why. This also helped me to have conversations with POI about my research and during the interviews it helped me to answer questions like why do you think you can do something different with so many people working in your same field. My advice would be to focus on finding out what are you really interested, and try to contact POI. At least that is what worked out for. Hope it helps!
  2. Thank you! I hope it works for you too!
  3. I follow the advice of a person that I know with low GRE scores. I had low GRE scores, I re-took the test several times and I could not get higher scores (I even got Magoosh reimbursement because I got even lower scores than ever after taking their course and doing everything following the crazy time consuming plan of study. It's not that the program does not work it's just that I am horrible taking tests and at one point I block myself, it happened to me too with the Toefl when I applied to my masters in the U.S.). After that, I realized the GRE makes me miserable. I do not have publications in the U.S either, and I did not have time to get something out there before submitting my application. I got rejected from 8 schools last year, and this year my best GRE score was the same I used in the previous application cycle. What this person recommended me was to contact POI, I contacted over 90-100 professors and applied to almost 15 schools and 18 programs (I had to save a lot and my credit card is totally collapsed). I wrote a standard e-mail introducing myself and attached my CV and a research proposal I wrote. The e-mail asked professors their advice and thoughts regarding my proposal and regarding the application. Most of them did not reply, others did. I apply to a conference (American Society of Criminology), and I contacted all the professors I was interested in working with that were attending to the conference with this strategy. I got meetings with them during the conference and talk with them about my proposal, my work, etc (it was like having the chance to have a pre-interview), I think if the know you you are not just a file, and the look you differently, beyond your test scores. I do not know if this helps, but I appreciated this advice when my friend gave it to me. She also got rejected from all schools she applied the first time (PhD in History). For me this new strategy worked, if you still want to apply it may work for you too. You can apply to fewer schools that I did (my friend applied only to 4-5 programs) and she still got positive results (she is at Princeton history department).
  4. I don't know, also take into account that I'm an international student, I do not know if that affects "my cost". Also, I have the impression that Minnesota send the results by waves, so maybe I was just waitlisted in the first round. Do not lose hope!
  5. I’m on Minnesota’s waitlist. The e-mail said they do not have funding and they hope they will get some. It says that before taking any decisión write to them if Minnesota is the first choice. They copied 5 POI in the e-mail, I don’t know why.
  6. Thank you! It is my first acceptance after Duke’s rejection, so I’m really excited. It was an e-mail from the department. I got an e-mail on Tuesday asking for more documents and an explanation about my transcripts so I think they are still reviewing things. Sure! I’m an international student (from Colombia). I did two undergrad programs at Colombia (not Columbia- Colombia) a BA in Economics and LLB in Law. Then did my masters degree in Law in the US and I’m currently finishing a JSD (it’s a research program after the masters in which you have to write a dissertation under the supervision of 3 faculty members). This is my second year applying (I got rejected from 8-10 schools last year). My GRE is not great (V157 Q158 AWA 5,0). I used the same GRE and the thing I did differently was that I contacted professors. I wrote a research proposal and started contacting professors to ask them feedback and any advice regarding the application. Let me know if you have any other question that I can help! And hopefully they are just taking more time to give you good news!
  7. I don’t think so, the deadline for soc dev was Dec 15 and for Sociology was after January 4. I think is too early for Cornell sociology decisions.
  8. The acceptance on the board is not mine, but I got mine yesterday by e-mail. The e-mail said they will send soon funding information, etc. It just said to save the date March 9 to attend the open house. Hope you get good news soon!
  9. I just saw the acceptance on the board. Let's wait and see, fingers cross we will get good news soon :)!
  10. Have you guys heard something from Minnesota?
