Thanks!  How generous is Columbia with merit-based scholarships?

Definitely not as generous as other schools. Most incoming students get some sort of institutional scholarship but I believe they are based on need, not on merit. There are other merit-based scholarships you can apply for through the school. I received $11k a year I think.

Does anyone know what is the median undergraduate GPA for accepted students?

I'm not sure the school really tracks this data. CSSW definitely looks at applications holistically though. People have been accepted with GPAs all over the charts.

Your admissions essay and experiences are just as important, if not more important than your GPA. I remember there being a lot of discussion about this on the Fall 2018 Columbia MSW thread if you care to look back.

  3. Hey everyone! I'm currently at CSSW as an advanced standing student in the policy concentration. I'll be graduating in May.

I'm happy to help with any questions based on my experiences. From what I know, admissions was short staffed last year which resulted in long application decision times. I applied before the priority deadline and didn't hear back until March. Could be different this year!

If my memory serves me right, during our orientation one of the assistant deans said that our cohort was the most competitive and that the program is getting more competitive because they receive higher amounts of applications each year. I believe the acceptance rate last year was around 60%.

You have all already shared this, but how much did y'all get in scholarship? I'm wondering what the max is. I got $11,000.

I received $11,000 in scholarships as well, $12,000 after I appealed. It seemed that a handful before me were receiving more like $18,000 and others have vaguely stated they received a "substantial" financial aid offer which made them able to go. I was a bit disappointed with my package but I accepted my offer nonetheless.

Thank you so much!! Same to you! I can’t wait! We should be meeting in class in July then? I’m an Adavnced Generalist Practice and Programming student! Moving from Los Angeles. :) I think I saw you in our CSSW new student FB group!

I think everyone on all these grad threads deserve a little party when all is settled lol. When it gets closer to the summer, I can create a New York MSWs GradCafe forum or FB group? What does everyone think? ?

haha nice! Feel free to add me :)

Yes, we will definitely have summer session together. From what I've heard, it sounds like you're basically grouped with your practice method after that.

I am happy to say that I have accepted Columbia’s offer and will be attending as a an advanced standing student! I have been going back-and-forth for a while, but I know this is the right choice for me. I am steadily rooting for you all that are waiting for your decision. I know that this is anxiety provoking experience, and I was in your shoes not too long ago. There are no right words to say for everyone but just know that your decision is coming.

The theory about them marking you down for calling multiple times, could be possible.  Anything could be possible! But I would hope that there is a high regard for professionalism at Columbia, and that it would not be the case. I also say this because I called many times before receiving my acceptance Lol.

If anyone is going back and forth, I am not qualified to tell you about the program 100% of course. But I could give you some insight on my decision!

Also, any one who is moving to New York City, I am actively looking to connect with my fellow social workers as I will be coming from across the country! Networking is key! Feel free to PM me. :)

Stay positive friends! I promise things will work out either way!

Congrats on your decision! I decided to accept my offer as well! I’ll be an advanced standing student in the policy concentration. I’m moving from Arizona!

We should definitely organize something for everyone on this thread who attends in the fall!

Good luck to all those who are still waiting!

    I was accepted!

I applied on 2/13 to the advanced standing program, policy track (contemporary social issues as my field of practice). They emailed me today at 5:17 pm.

Some stats for those who find it helpful: My cumulative GPA was 3.33 but my social work GPA was much higher probably around 3.8 though I'm not sure. I never got less than an A- in any of my social work classes. I went to NYU for my BSW. I held a variety of internships as an undergrad in the legal field. I also volunteered at a few different places which included working with holocaust survivors, youth and teaching a class for people who are incarcerated. I also always had at least two paying jobs at the same time (not including internships) while in undergrad to pay my bills and tuition.

I've been working at a public defender's office in NYC as a paralegal since graduating undergrad in 2015 and am now in a supervisory role there. I also work part time on the weekends with a youth soccer organization in E. Harlem as a youth advocate. After graduation I also started volunteering at an organization that assists people with their parole hearings in NY state.

I was open about being interested in going to law school in the future throughout my application in addition to discussing the many "adversities" I've been through in my life. I put that word in quotes because I think it's a silly way to describe obstacles folks have had to overcome but whatever. No one has really been talking about diversity here, at least from what I've seen, but I'll add that I'm a native Spanish speaker, I identify as Latina, my mom is from  the South Bronx and my dad grew up in Mexico. I wonder what, if any, bearing the admissions committee has been putting on creating diversity in their incoming class. I would hope they've been  intentional on that front!

Anyway..... I also applied to NYU and Hunter but haven't heard back from them and am 99% certain I'm going to accept Columbia's offer.

    Lmk if you have questions.

Congrats on your acceptance! I am also an advanced standing student entering the policy track concentration in contemporary social issues!

    See you this fall!

Quick question to admitted Columbia students.! For those who have received their financial packages, do you mind sharing what you received? Specifically for advanced standing applicants. If you don’t mind sharing of course!  If you would rather PM me, you are more than welcome to.

Just a little update - they accepted my appeal but only gave me $1,000 more. Not quite what I hoped for but I suppose every little bit helps!

I will be accepting my admission this week.

Thank you for this!!! Oh GOODNESS. If I only get 11k I will be highly upset. Have you been working full time or something?

Im hoping for the 18k as well. NYU offered the same.

Yeah I've been working full time and I'm also married. My wife works as well.

It isn't really fair to base it off that though because when we move I will be unemployed. Our financial situation will be so different! I received a fairly promising email from the dean on Friday who said I'll hear back about a "revised package" this week.

I received 11K in scholarships. I was a little disappointed to be honest. It seems like most others got 18k or so.

I submitted an appeal so we'll see if they'll bump me up at all. NYU offered me 17k.

I got this email as well and they responded with the exact same thing. Another friend of mine received his financial aid package yesterday and called me today, livid. He said he only received $5000 with no work-study. As out of state students, this package makes it difficult for us to consider moving to New York and attending Columbia.

Side note, I was able to visit Columbia this past Sunday and Monday and speak to the folks in admissions. I have also been speaking to student ambassadors through the Admitted Students page. I'm happy to answer any questions that folks might have about my general impressions of the student body as well as the school in general.

Woah, $5000? I'm definitely hoping for more than that. I was offered $17,000 from NYU so if I receive a low offer I will definitely use that as some leverage to appeal for more funding. I think NYU's scholarships are based off of merit and I'm not sure if Columbia is based off merit or need? I hope to know more soon!

  12. My friend is at Columbia right now in the clinical track as an advanced standing student. She mentioned she felt the classes weren't as impactful for her coming in as BSW. She said the classes felt a lot more like refreshing her memory than really teaching her new things. But she did mention that she loved her policy electives and felt she was growing a lot in those classes. I was juggling between the two tracks at the time and that really confirmed for me that the macro track is what I should do.

Oh, yikes! Is that price after books and fees, or strictly tuition?

Edit: never mind, looked it up. That's after all estimated fees, assuming you'd be buying books and whatnot full price.

Yeah. Part of it is that extra $9000 they charge you for the four week summer session. RIP.

Also, did you find out about your acceptance yet? I know you decided to attend Chicago - just curious!

Does anyone know offhand the total cost of Columbia? By my estimation it’s like 90k for tuition alone, which seems insane, but what do I know...

You can find a tuition and fee chart on the website. I haven't looked at the 2 year program costs but the advanced standing total program cost is about $62,000.
