Hey there! Your GPA is fantastic- mine is around the same; its an A- to an A (Ryerson's 4.33 scale kinda messed the calculation up); You never know about the statement! I just found out that I had a little error in mine so I hope they discount it (e.g. wrote I worked with 9 individuals on a project when it was 7 and i wrote 7 on my cv lol). I'm happy you came out to talk! I really hope it works out for all of us

When you registered with the SGS to process your app, they must have emailed you sending the following info (yourJOINid is basically your ACORN info; after you set it up using the info below, use the following link to sign in to access ACORN [ya uoft is confusing AF but it is what it is -____- ] https://idpz.utorauth.utoronto.ca/idp/profile/SAML2/Redirect/SSO?execution=e1s1): Thank you for applying to the School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto. NOTE: This e-mail message is not an offer of admission. We are sending this to give you your JOINid and instructions for enabling it. The second half of the e-mail provides information on how to use the JOINid to apply for student housing. Every applicant to the University of Toronto is assigned a JOINid. For graduate applicants, the JOINid gives early access to the online resources of the student housing office. If you begin studies at U of T, it will become your UTORid, which will allow you to access a number of services such as email, library resources, and Blackboard. Please keep your log-in information private, as you would for any other online username or password that grants access to sensitive personal information. This is your JOINid: __________________ Your JOINid will not work until you enable it. Step 1: Retrieve your student number. · Go to the SGS Admissions Application login page and log in with your 12-digit Applicant ID and password. · After logging in, click “Profile Update” in the blue menu bar at the top of the page. · Find your U of T Student Number at the top of the page that follows. Step 2: Enable your JOINid. As a new applicant, you will need to first enable your JOINid in order to login to MyRes and apply for residence. Go to the Enable Your JOINid website Enter your JOINid in the JOINid box. Enter your U of T Student Number into the “applicant/student number” box, and then click “Continue” When prompted, enter your date of birth. If you have any trouble enabling your JOINid, please contact admissions.sgs@utoronto.ca.

I called York's school of social work- they said it won't be impacting admissions at all!
-
Does anyone know if uoft does a background check after you've been accepted into the msw program? My references said they wrote great things about me, but do they end up calling them after given admission? How does this usually work for grad school lol

I pray we both get in! you sound so qualified lol- especially your gpa (kinda intimidated now haha)

Hi Friends! @MMSW1 @SW Sevante I applied to UofT for the 2-year MSW program. I'm taking the research methods course right now. I had originally signed up for it in October 2017 but wasn't able to start the course until Jan 2018 since I got busy with work and personal things swayed in. Athabasca gives an extension option (they give you an additonal 2-3 months to complete the course with a fee of $150 i believe). I started it in January and I'm literally on my last assignment right now. The tutor, peter kennett is phenomenal and super helpful I think I called him like 4 times to talk about the literature review assignment and he was super supportive. However, I will say that the research methods course is pretty heavy and I'm someone who has GAD so it really does take out of you mentally and emotionally- however, remember, its an intro class and the prof even knows to expect that the students aren't experts in social science. The course is going well so far (the GAD and my type A-ness combined is helping I guess? idk lol). Just make sure you prioritize! The quizzes are pretty easy- I didn't read the books, literally just used the online modules to get summaries but google helped a bit and control-f'ing key things. I'm no longer working anymore- so this course is literally all I'm concentrating on and have been since January. But that's because its really hard for me to juggle school and work! Definitely give it a try- I suggest you start with the quizzes and midterm first (the midterm can be saved and you can go back and complete it, same with the quizzes- no time limit which is amazing); and remember its all open book as well! you got this! i believe in you

You're literally thegradcafe whisperer haha- doing such a good job as a social worker already (boosting our confidence and reassuring us) <3 In terms of the relevance of my degree, Angela said that in the past, there have been several applicants and students who have possessed a business degree & as you mentioned, in the post prior to this, I tried my very best to explain the competencies that overlap between HR and social work, as well as similar concepts I shall do that! Sounds like a very good idea & a way to just hand that in. If you don't mind me asking, what are you coming into uoft with (in terms of degree)? and is this your first time applying to the program?

both your experience and GPA sound top notch as well! Honestly, let's just pray we all get what we deserve. I talked to a few people who graduated from the program and they said so so so many factors go into hand when determining who gets accepted. Like my friend who was on waitlist for her one year BSW last june, got accepted around then despite the fact that her GPA was a A- and research course was a B/B+ Anything can happen! and sounds like from the posts above, you too worked super hard on your personal statements! I just really hope uoft can see that

I really hope so! Everyone sounds so spectacular in terms of their experience and GPA I worked on my statements from the end of my undergrad (may 2017)! Getting so many people to look at it and tell me what they think. I lack so much confidence since I'm still working on this research course! I'll have it done in the next week or so...I just hope I'm not too late. I indicated it on my resume how I will have it done by that time frame.

I did my undergrad in business with a major in human resources management! Although my degree is in business, in HR, we have a huge emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. I've conducted a seminar in diversity and inclusion: "gender and sexuality in the workplace" where I gained knowledge regarding social work relevant issues such as misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and how they affect an individual's success in the labor market, education system, and in overall society. I also critically analyzed this through a social, cultural, economical, and political point of view and obtained info on personal struggles associated with individuals who have issues with gender identity and have faced discrimination regarding their gender and sexual orientation, as well as the gaps that currently exist in helping them integrate into society. Also conducted a training session for training and development in workplace harassment where we addressed the prohibited grounds and how this affects the workplace in the context of an organization, person, and task (so needs analysis) My GPA in my final year was a 3.98 on a 4.33 scale. I'm in the process of completing my research course (one assignment to go!) which I'm getting an A+ in (fingers crossed!) I've worked at a housing and support agency which provides services to newcomers from arabic, farsi, and spanish speaking environments; ran a few groups and helped run client programs (840 hours in total). I was also a program facilitator at a youth summer program in BC where it aiemd to strengthen and nurture the sense of belonging in the community and develop self-esteem, critical thinking, and inclusiveness (240 hours) I worked at my students union as a centre for women and trans people coordinator (450 hours), in the role of a HR coordinator (250 hours), volunteered with kids who have special needs (200 hours), community centre for newcomers (since I speak around 6 languages, I used my skill to communicate with our clients and make them feel supported and safe), a group facilitator on campus, I also went abroad to volunteer in Africa where I helped develop a microfinance program for women in the village and how they can use their skills to improve their lives on a social, economic and cultural level while encouraging empowerment (300 hours), went abroad to pakistan as well (approx 600 hours) I have many other roles as a peer mentor, mental health listener, community leader, and program assistant at a caregiving centre which takes up about 2000-2500 hours I also have experience as a research associate working at a diversity, equity, and inclusion firm which did social justice research, education, and consulting (900 hours) I myself don't know if this is enough or good experience lol- but I hope it is! Hbu?

I still haven't heard back anything! I applied to uoft for their 2-year msw

Hi everyone! I'm karisma & I'm applying to the 2 year MSW program at uoft and york as well as lakehead orillia/thunderbay, york, and mcmaster for their post degree bsw programs. Since I have an undergrad in business (a specialization in human resources), I was explicitly told by the York grad admin that I have 0 chances of getting in since they prefer students from the social sciences and humanities (its also a fully funded program hence the competitiveness). I had a few questions for you all: 1) Is anyone still in the process of completing their research methods requirement? I took a couple of statistics courses during my undergrad but did very poor in them because I took them in my first year. I'm currently getting an A+ in the research methods course, however, I'll have it completed by the end of February and I heard that mid march is when decisions come out. At this point I feel very discouraged to even get into the program since I don't have this portion completed yet...I suffer from anxiety and I'm really trying my best right now However my GPA in my last year is a 3.95 on a 4.33 scale, and I have numerous volunteer and work experiences [working with populations such as newcomers with mental health, a peer support group volunteer, volunteering internationally in africa (jump starting a women's microfinance program to promote empowerment , independence, and entrepreneurship) and pakistan as a special needs assistant at local schools, volunteering at ethnic community centres, and the list can go on]. I also was a research associate for a diversity, equity and inclusion firm for 10 months and got my supervisor to write me a reference- all 3 of my references reassured me how they wrote terrific things about my work ethic, my critical thinking, and ability to understand diverse and marginalized populations 2) My research course is taking place online with Athabasca University...any of you completed it there as well? 3) Has anyone else applied to the post degree programs at the schools I mentioned above? Or has a post degree BSW at the moment? As I mentioned above, my GPA from my last year (5 full credits) is a 3.95/4.33, but my overall CGPA is a B (because of family situations and personal mental health situations which really made it hard to focus during my 1st/2nd year of uni- but I soared with flying colours through years 3-5). I'm really leaning towards York's post degree BSW (that has a minimum B overall GPA requirement)- it has an awesome AOP framework and such diverse courses. did any of you get in with the minimum B component? Also waiting to write the Social work admissions test for mcmaster in March! I I know there isn't a thread for the post degree program but for those of you who currently possess it, do you have any advice for someone who is stressing over this such as myself?
