  1. @pdh12 huge congrats!!!
  2. Phone number
  3. I'm not sure if this is how UChicago functions, but a friend of mine who applied to something wildly different (Public Policy Master's) got in without ever getting an interview even though others did get interviews. It is definitely a possibility!
  4. I didn't think about the emails going to spam! My schools don't notify until about the same time, but I'll have to give my spam a glance every once in a while. Thanks for this tip!
  5. Sometimes I browse other humanities forums, and I think someone in history mentioned that a friend of theirs got a phone interview and found out that a lot of the people they were interested in working with were either retiring or leaving the institution! They can definitely be good for you, too.
  6. Regarding vanishing dates on a website, it's possible that those were leftover from the previous year and they only updated it in some places and not others. You might check to see how the dates line up with last year's calendar (if it's more squarely a business week).
  7. @j.alicea Big congrats to you! Thanks for the info, too.
  8. Maybe search the previous threads to see if anyone talked about their Emory experiences? If it's 4 days they're probably investing a significant chunk of coin into putting you up, transportation, etc. so they're really trying to impress you as much as you'd like to impress them--it's yours to lose at this point, so no need to be super anxious! There are usually events to show you what life is going to be like in the area, hence the city tour. EDIT: And, of course, congrats on the interview!
  9. Wow, this thread is seriously busy today! Big congrats to @Englishtea1! Just checked out the Waiting it out "awkward moments" thread... I actually googled and found the POI who ended up killing his wife by cyanide--it's legit!!! Edit: Not that I'm excited she died..Oops, just read the next few posts and they actually link to it themselves. But, still, very crazy.
  10. @mandelbulb & @dilby Thank you for the words of encouragement and comfort!
  11. Thank you so much for the comfort ❤️ Yes, I've definitely been coming to terms with the fact that we wouldn't work out long-term, and that it was better to have ended things sooner rather than later. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through something similar, but I'm so glad that you got a yoga studio membership and have been throwing yourself into that! Oooh... I don't use social media very much, and I am very thankful for that in this moment.
  12. I graduated last year and have been working at your standard office job, so I definitely appreciate that my free time is actually free time. As a student, it was very easy to feel like there were only two ways to spend my time--procrastinating vs. working, with free time activities (like watching Netflix, leisure reading, etc) feeling like the former. I have found myself thinking along these lines too--it may be very nice to continue working an office job, and reading for pleasure ALL THE TIME. I guess I'm less keen on this idea because I went through a hard breakup recently which was, in part, due to the fact that my ex didn't want me to apply/go to graduate school/do a long-distance relationship. ? But, otherwise, I do want to second that it is very nice to have free time where you actually feel free! Edit: @Bopie5 Yes! Sometimes I find myself thinking I should have secretly just applied to graduate school so that way I wouldn't have to update anyone other than my letter writers... I'd rather not face them with bad news of rejections, but at least that's a finite number!
  13. Does anybody else vacillate between thinking that they're definitely going to get into XYZ school and thinking that they're definitely going to get rejected from everywhere? I'll catch myself thinking, "I should brush up on Latin before graduate school," and other times I'm like, "Welp. Full-time office job, please don't suck too much or give me back pain from being so sedentary."
  14. I agree...It's so nice to read!!
  15. I'm from California. I didn't even realize houses could be that cheap. I'm going to look at this market... I think you MIGHT be able to buy a cardboard box on 1 sq ft of land for that much where I am. Edit: Ohmygod I just found a house for 12k. I'm so confused. Is this real??? It's not a shack/outhouse. It has 2 bedrooms!!!!!
  16. @pdh12 Congrats on the interview! RE: Seattle housing... I hadn't realized efficiency pods were legitimately a thing the first time they were mentioned (in this thread), but have just looked them up. Quite expensive!
  17. Yes, definitely! Sorry again for causing any commotion. Plus, maybe that's what they're trying to do with the interviews? Find collaborative-minded people? RE: Departmental politics--I agree there will probably always be a little something going on, but they can still be healthy environments! I'm mostly interested in a place with equal funding because from what I hear having to compete for funding sounds like it creates a lot of toxicity.
  18. Oops--so sorry, should have mentioned that he also went there decades ago (he's a full professor now), so it may have changed significantly.
  19. @flungoutofspace Will look into David Alworth as the text/image relationship is definitely of interest to me. @punctilious Thank you for weighing in your with your husband's experience so we can live vicariously @lyonel_ I'll look into Shelly Streeby's work too--I've read an article or two of hers before! Is she one of the people at UCSD that you're hoping to work with? RE: Chicago--One of my letter of recommendation writers did his PhD there, and described it as "masochism masquerading as education." From his description, everyone seemed to try to play mind games, so I would ignore the interview post for now!
  20. Same! In my own way of sticking to academic-related books though, I finished an epistolary novel called Dear Committee Members which utilized recommendation letters. Absolutely hilarious! I started Jesmyn Ward's Sing, Unburied, Sing recently. I'm also reading a popular science book called Why We Sleep (which is convincing me to sleep a little bit more/better!!)
  21. @flungoutofspace Ooh, one thing that I find great when I'm short on time is listening to the podcast series by Marshall Poe. They're all called "New Books in [field]." The idea behind them is that someone might not read the actual scholarly work a professor just spent years completing, so the books and ideas are in a podcast format. I listen to some that I find interesting from the little blurbs, and then sometimes I'll also check out the book after. Unrelated to the podcast, but I checked out a book called Picturing Identity recently. It's a recent release on contemporary US autobiographies and how they have increasingly used different media than text alone Lots of good stuff out there, and not enough time!
  22. I have been spared the stress dreams, luckily! I have no idea who I'd ask, @mandelbulb I feel like I'm jinxing myself just looking at the campus visits thread that is pinned though!
  23. If admin are still collecting rec letters from other people, the professors probably haven't started evaluating in earnest. But, I would definitely feel 100% the same way!!!
  24. That does sound super fun! I took a class that touched on conspiracy theories, and our professor mentioned that there's apparently some conspiracy theory about Disney pushing a homosexual agenda in their movies? Maybe these people would benefit from reading your finished product!
  25. I can't say I'm actively working on anything right now! Since I graduated in June, I've been trying to read up on visual culture since that's a developing interest. Otherwise, I've been indulging in some leisure reading. What about you, @Bopie5?
