  1. Looks like someone got an interview at Columbia -- not me! lol #gettingrejectedsoon
  2. Hi @Green.Mango I can write to you in private. Obviously these were the opinions of two graduate students, but it sounded like their peers shared many of them. FWIW, they are both finishing their PhDs, but are graduating with a severe dislike of the department and are refusing their faculty's requests to reach out to potential applicants in their undergraduate alma maters.
  3. Okay the day is basically over I give up. Until next week!
  4. The day isn't over yet @Carly Rae Jepsen! Keep holdin' on. Haha
  5. WashU appealed to me for many reasons, including the funding, the relationship between the French and comparative literature departments, and the depth and breadth of their certificate programs. St. Louis is also nice, but not absurdly expensive like NYC.
  6. @Carly Rae Jepsen I applied to WashU, and what you have to do to get a fee waiver is to email graduateschool@wustl.edu detailing why you believe you should get a fee waiver. It was definitely confusing when they told me to follow the instructions as well. You could also elect to not report GRE scores, and cite the cost as a reason, and they will consider your application with just your self-reported scores. Good luck! (I'll PM you the email)
  7. Will today be the day
  8. I stare at my email all day. Lol
  9. Yeah, I think in French departments, or foreign languages generally, it would be odd to not have an interview process. The wealthiest and 'biggest name' schools have Skype interviews and then interviews on-campus before admission.
  10. Hmm, people posted on the results section that they got interview requests from Michigan, and acceptances to Penn! Congrats to whoever that is!
  11. Yeah same, in no small part because I am in school atm. I can also improve my application essays over time, so I tend to put off turning in applications until the last minute.
  12. Ahh yes, IU Bloomington is a public school. It seems like private schools are open and are responding to my emails. My emails probably radiate anxiety haha, even though I just ask for logistical help.
  13. I bet we will hear something this week from some school. We've got to! Also hmmm are schools closed or open during MLK day? Not sure?
  14. I seriously hope we aren't booted for small typos. The applicant pool should be small enough that admissions can look beyond that. Lol I just reread one of my why this school and realized that one of the arguments I made for why I should work with this person.. well.. makes no sense. Oh welllll.
  15. Do you all think admissions committees run on weekends too?
  16. http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/documents/program-statistics/F15PH_adm_enr.pdf @madamoiselle The latest acceptance rate is 31%.
  17. In the ONE French word I had on my SOP, I put the wrong accent on the word. Does not bode very well for me lol.
  18. Hey our odds are better than those of the folks in the English world amirite lol Also I think Duke's admissions stats look more competitive because of all the Spanish PhD applicants.. and the applicant count at NW has gone down over the years. NYU states its acceptance rate is 10%-ish, but I think they count the applicants to the history program as well, which is always much more competitive. The only thing I do know is that admissions is becoming, in a sense, less difficult as students fully begin to understand that, well, there are simply no jobs in academia, and to spend 5-7 years training for a job that doesn't exist is unwise--my faculty members have made this abundantly clear to me and all the folks in my dept. But lol here I am!
  19. Echoing what @ba1dp said. Many universities in the Netherlands offer courses in English for an MA, for instance. But Europe is too broad, and we'd need to know where. Even places that charge tuition, like the Charles University in Prague, are quite affordable imo.
  20. Nope, not yet. Looks like UChicago does not interview and just sends out decisions. Odd...
  21. Woo! Yeah, I am anticipating a rejection letter from UChicago very soon. Or worse, a recommendation to the MAPH program.
  22. I'm starting to get impatient now lol SO angoissé
  23. Not at all haha! I attend a small LAC.
  24. Unrelated, but in the bathrooms of my undergraduate college, I quite often encounter the graffiti, "Foucault was a bottom!" lol
  25. I've gotten tons of feedback from graduate students in their 6th/7th years, warning me about the job market, even for the brightest of students in the best programs. They suggested that I get a PhD in a social science where I could explore French/literary topics but find myself with a job once I graduate, even if it isn't in academia. I have fond memories of studying sociology--definitely the field of my academic awakening--so I'm not opposed to it. If I don't get into my PhD programs this year (or even my more realistic master's programs in French with funding), I will probably go this route, taking the hint that I'm not good enough to get a PhD in French, or whatever. So yeah, I will probably get a master's in sociology in France or another European country, and then possibly reapply to American PhD programs in sociology. Doesn't have to be the best program--the whole point of being a sociologist rather than a literary theorist is to be employable elsewhere if I don't find the elusive tenure-track job. I have experience with quantitative work, so hopefully I can go into the this part of the field. My interests are in contemporary Francophone literature, and in topics in migration and diaspora, so I could fit in neatly in a sociology (or maybe anthro) department. The disciplinary lens would be different, but in this day of interdisciplinary inquiry, I am excited about the possibilities.
