Hi! I would love to know more about you! What was your gpa? Did you have volunteer hours with an SLP? Did you have anything on your CV that made you stand out? Any suggestions for a strong letter that will make me stand out?

Hey! My cumulative gpa was around a 3.8 and sub gpa was around 3.85. I had about 200 hours working with a SLP at a preschool speech and language clinic, and about 75 hours working with adults with aphasia. I also had some research experience working in a cognitive neuroscience lab that focused heavily on language. I know multiple of my friends who are in the program with me right now who had lower gpa's as well as less hours so definitely don't get discouraged if you feel like you may be lacking in either area. They really do look for overall well-rounded candidates, and in my opinion (also based on some of my classmates' stats that I've heard) your volunteer experience is more important than your gpa!

Where can we find information on the various schools and comparisons between them? (i.e., Western vs. Dal vs. Alberta, etc.). It would be helpful to know in the consideration of schools!

https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/orpas-program-requirements/ I found this link to be helpful in weighing my chances at the different Ontario schools. It shows you how many people applied vs how many seats are available and some general information about the programs. I'm not sure if there is a website that exists comparing all schools, though. Not that I have come across anyways.

    Hi everyone!

First of all, congrats to everyone that was accepted! Would those of you who were accepted to U of T and Western mind sharing your GPAs with me? Just so I have a good idea of where I should roughly try be next year.

    Thanks :)

I had a cumulative GPA of 3.83 and a subGPA of 3.89 and was accepted at both Western and Toronto. I know people who have been accepted with GPAs that are quite a bit lower than that though who had great volunteer experience so they definitely look at a combination of both!

  4. Did anyone else who applied to Western just get an email reminding you to activate your Western Identity even though you already did so? Just wondering if this was a reminder email that went out to all applicants or if I somehow did something wrong when activating my Western Identity months ago and I need to activate a new one. Thanks!

    Guys!

Whats the average acceptance GPA for U of T SLP?

I don't think they explicitly state an average GPA on their website or anywhere, but by the looks of past forums I think the average for U of T is around a 3.8-3.85. I know people who have gotten in there and other places with GPAs lower than this, but it just depends on your SLP volunteer experience as well!

    Hi everyone!

I'm a third year student looking to apply January 2019 into the SLP Masters programs. Right now I'm looking at Alberta, McGill, McMaster, Western and maybe two schools in Grand Forks. I am of indigenous ancestry and I was wondering if anyone with the same background of me would be willing to share their application experience. I do have a fairly competitive GPA but obviously nervous with such a competitive pool. I'm hoping my indigenous ancestry will help as some universities save 2 seats each year or advance indigenous students to the interview level of the application.

I would love to hear from anyone who has anymore insight and is willing to share!

Thanks so much guys and have a great day!

McMaster invites anyone of Indigenous background to their interviews (https://srs-mcmaster.ca/slp-admissions/#1491934523574-b42a1edc-1fa4) and then from there you will be considered among all other applicants based on your GPA and interview scores. I'm not sure about the other schools though!

Can someone please clarify when we will hear back from ORPAS and where this was listed? Is it the same structure every year (checking the ORPAS portal) or could individual schools contact us before that?  Thanks! :)

https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/orpas-dates/ from reading past years forums is seems that right at midnight they update ORPAS with acceptances, and you won't be contacted before then

Hey everyone, in hopes to try to distract myself for the next two weeks until we receive ORPAS results, I was wondering what are your top school choices and why? I'm from Montreal so getting the rejection from McGill really got me on a downer but I'm trying to keep positive for the other schools I applied to (McMaster, UofT, Ottawa, Western). Any responses are super appreciated :)

Hey @SLPletsgo! My top choice is definitely Western, followed by U of T and then McMaster. This is mainly because of how close Western is from where I live (only about 2 hours away, whereas McMaster is 3 hours and Toronto is about 4 hours). I'm also really interested in working with children, especially children with autism, and I have heard from many that Western has more opportunity to work with children (including their own autism research lab!!) while Toronto is more adult-oriented. I'm not sure what McMaster is like in terms of the clinical populations they tend to work with since it is so new, but it also seems like a great school from what I saw when I went for the interview, just the fact that it is not yet accredited has slightly deterred me from wanting to go there. I would be thrilled to be accepted to any school though!

I COMPLETELY AGREE! These next 3 weeks are going to be a challenge for sure - I'm trying to stay as busy as possible so I won't think about it every waking moment!

I think that my #1 choice is McMaster - I've been living in Hamilton for almost 8 years and I feel really committed to the city and the university - it would be great to not have to move! However I know there are some serious downfalls to attending a program that isn't yet accredited and is basically brand new! So I will seriously have to consider the pros and cons if I am accepted to more than 1 school.

So far I've been accepted to SUNY Buffalo and Dalhousie but hoping to attend a more local university.

McMaster seems like a great school! Going to Hamilton for the interview was the first time I'd ever been there and it seems like a really nice city, but I'm also hesitant about the program not being accredited yet. Congrats on the acceptances you already have!!

My top choice is U of A. Besides location, I know some SLPs who attended the program who said that they liked the fact that the program is more clinically focused while some programs are more research focused. I already know that research isn't what I want to do after school, so a clinically focused school would work well for me.

That's good to know! I didn't apply to Alberta only because of how far it is from my hometown (I'm from southern Ontario), but I would prefer a clinically based program over a research based program as well.

  11. These next few weeks waiting to hear back from Ontario schools will be the death of me. Such a long waiting process! While we wait, what is everyone's top school choice and why? In the unlikely event that I get accepted to multiple schools (wishful thinking), it would be really nice to know what you all think of each program!

Is anyone still waiting for an email from McMasters?

I received an email from them on Thursday March 1st which took me by surprise because they said offers would be sent out on March 2nd. I read through a lot of these forums from last year and people said they also received emails if they weren't offered an interview so I would call if you haven't heard anything yet!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted into Alberta, that's awesome! For those of us who applied to Ontario schools, we have just over a month to go. Has anyone else applied to McMaster? The MMI interviews are supposed to be coming out next Friday and I'm nervous.

I applied to all three Ontario schools. I'm also feeling very nervous for next Friday when we find out about McMaster interviews. Fingers crossed for all of us who applied!!

Hey HopefulSpeechie2018, did you get the email from UofT by any chance? Thanks :)

Hey! No I haven't heard anything yet unfortunately which I thought was kind of strange. But they confirmed when I called before that they received my application so I'm not too concerned.

I received an email from Sarah (the admission coordinator) and she told me they received my application but there is no portal (if I needed I had any more questions, I should contact OPRAS directly). So I am a bit confused in terms what specific portal is their for UofT?

Hmm, yeah I'm a bit confused as well. I still haven't received the email that they said I would but I will let you know if I do and if there is any sort of student ID or portal provided. I feel much better just knowing they received my application though!

What email did you use, this one: (slp.admissions@utoronto.ca)? I applied in December 2017 so I am a bit confused on why I haven't received any updated from UofT!

I called this phone number (416) 978-6614 and explained the situation. All they required was my OUAC reference number, name, and birthday and they were able to tell me that they have received my application and should be receiving email confirmation this week.

Glad I was able to help! Did they send you the email?

They said they receive applications on a "rolling" basis, not all at once, and they just received mine on the 11th so I should be getting the email with my ID within the next week. Hope this helps anyone else in the same position as I was!
