  1. Hi all,

I'm a first year psych phd student who has realized that I am more interested in pursuing philosophy.  I am looking to start a funded philosophy MA program in either fall 2019 or spring 2020.  Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

IMO, the largest challenge in front of you is that while you're imagining yourself doing history, the individuals with whom you'll compete for jobs are doing history. MOO, addressing this disparity should be your primary focus because your skill level is something you can control. You can learn to read, to think, to write, and to act like a historian. You cannot forecast the job market five to ten years from now.

What is the craft of history? Why do you want to be a historian? What is public history and why do you want to specialize in that field? How do you see yourself impacting the key historiopgraphical debates in public history? IMO, the answers to these questions will be of more interest to historians than your GPA.

I very strongly recommend that you start working on the thumbnail sketch that will indicate you are committed to the craft. Something along the general lines of:

History is the study of change over time. Public history is [left intentionally blank]. By focusing on A,B, and C from the perspective of a public historian, I hope to contribute X, Y, and Z to debates 1, 2, and 3. As a graduate student, I will do j,k,l, and m, ideally with Professors Curry, Durant, and James.

FWIW, one of the most brilliant people I've ever met was a UG classmate who double majored in math and history. He went to graduate school in history almost as an afterthought and he easily secured for himself a TT position.

omg wtf lol phd hth ftw imo

I posted a thread a while ago about my decision to or to not invest 100,000 dollars into NYU for grad school (my only option). After a LOT of long conversations with my friends and with my partner I'm not going to go.

I got a job at a speech clinic as a receptionist, i'm going to retake the GRE, continue working in the lab I work in, and give it all another try after one long post-bacc year. Just in case anybody is in the same place or will be in the future, I just wanted to go on record saying people DO do this. Hopefully it'll work out this next time around!!

My parents will be bummed, that will be a hard conversation. Hopefully they'll understand! They weirdly hadn't been concerned about the debt but they also aren't the ones living with it.

    Thanks for the help! ❤️

❤️ Have a great life.  It is expensive. NYU is a good school. Meaning is what really matters in life, considering that I could list a hundred facts like the two I just cited without helping unless they means something to yourself. It sounds like you'll be just fine.

As a Californian, before applying to grad school, I wouldn't have known UNC was even remotely a notable school, but I've always known Brown.

And to take it even further, before applying to grad school this fall, I did not know WUSTL, Chicago, Vanderbilt, NYU, CIT, UND, Northwestern, Emory, Georgetown, USC, UVA, Michigan, Brandeis, MIT, Bloomington, SUNY, any of those top 50 liberal arts colleges (still don't), any of those public ivies, etc......yeah, i was kinda weird. Actually, I didn't even know UPenn was an ivy until college. As a Northeasterner, whenever I thought about prestigious, basically just Boston schools, Rutgers, and UMass came to mind.  For some reason, I thought public flagships were all prestigious enough.......and, actually, I still do. Really, its SO SO SO SO bizarre because the exception was I knew almost all the best schools in Boston and New York, ie Northeastern, Tufts, BU, Syracuse, Rochester, and Fordham.....I also knew duke, carnegie mellon and johns hopkins but I had no clue they were even remotely close to an ivy and I was way more impressed when I found out someone I knew went to Rutgers for undergrad compared to the fact that they went to JH for PHD......*eyeflinch eyeflinch* haha i didnt even know what a PHD was till junior year of hs......clearly, I'm an academic. ;P ? ?

So stuck here. I got an offer from Brown's MPA program. The program is a perfect fit for me, but it's not super highly-ranked. My other offer is from UNC (top 25). Is the Ivy League brand worth it in this case? Please note that Brown's program is only a few years old. Please help!

If its a perfect fit, why worry about ranking?  Brown has a great name and as others have said, I never even knew of UNC until applying to grad school, so it seems like you would be getting "prestige" in either scenario, although Brown is a better fit. IMO, Brown would impress me 10x more even if its not top 25....

  5. Hello,

Preparing for entering grad school, and one question I have is as follows:  I have a new grad school e-mail address, yet I am cautious to login for the first time because there are indications that hackers have access to my current laptop and perhaps other devices.   So, I plan to get new devices for grad school e-mails and such. However, part of the reason I was hacked, I belivee, is because I used my undergrad school e-mail. How can I maximize grad e-mail account security this time around? I would be willing to change my password weekly, but the problem is, once a hacker gets into a computer, they can keep accessing the new passwords as they update.  Please help!

    Thanks,

Not to count my chickens before they're hatched, but as I applied to 10 different universities, have already been accepted to one and offered to interview for another, I think saying I will have more than one option is fairly reasonable. However, I've never been in that position before. For undergrad, I only applied to the school I attended. For my MA I attended the only school that accepted me. I've never had to choose between schools. Obviously money will be a factor, but what all else do you consider when deciding which offer to accept? How do you weight your considerations? Do you use pro/con lists? A chart? Flip a coin? Help a sista out and tell me what y'all do.

    Gurlll you count those chickens

Why are you driving out there for an informal visit separate from a formal visit/interview?

This is my main reservation.  Others suggested the idea, and I was thinking it may demonstrate an interest as the OP suggested, but I decided against it because the entire visit begs the question.

I applied to a clinical psych program that was due December 1st. Since then Ive learned that a cognitive scientist at the same school is working an a research project that I feel is a perfect match for my back ground. This application is due on Jan 15th. What are your opinions of applying to two programs at the same school being that both of my SOPs will naturally be structured toward each professor. I dont want to be seen as dishonest or desperate.

I'm doing this at two schools, but in both situations, they are programs similar to each other. Got an interview at one, and at the other, the POI recommended that I apply to the second program! So it is not necessarily bad at all! Sometimes it is encouraged!

  9. Hi

I was invited for interview.  My POI and I have informally interviewed via skype.  I will be driving six hours to informally tour the uni by myself.  Do you think that I could offer to meet with the POI during my time there?  It would be next week, and I think that might be short notice? Plus he might not accept the invitation, which would be awkward when I see him for the actual interview.

    Looks like it. =)

Any news so far? I only applied to two programs and they both send out invites relatively late. One PI for one of them has started sending out interview emails and Ive yet to get anything so I'm starting to sweat. I found a cognitive psych MA that can potentially transfer to a PhD at UT Dallas in case this season is a bust.

Good luck!  I got one interview but that was mid December.  I am concerned that you will get in.  It is not my concern if I get in necessarily, only because I have some thoughts about psychology concerning or regarding where I'm at right now.

I completed a 1 year at Brandeis University. The curriculum is recognized for research driven emphasis, so you'd be completing a thesis in that time too as an FYI. Some of my cohort (myself included) collected data in that time while others analyzed data that was readily available/ wrote reviews for their theses. It all depends on what you're looking to accomplish in that time, but I would not recommend a master's that is centered strictly in coursework if this is a stepping stone. I had also applied to BU but didn't receive a scholarship or any financial assistance so that guided my choice of Brandeis (they provide a merit based scholarship!)

Wonderful!  They are both in my area.  My Quantitative GRE was abysmal at 47%.  The average is so high for Brandeis.  I could definitely raise it by the deadline, unless the deadline is March.  Theirs is 158 and mine is 152. :/ My verbal is 163, 93%, and my writing is also 93%... Would they accept me? I have a year of two research experiences... edit: gpa of 3.88 and I literally got my bachelor's in two years.

  12. I am looking to compile a list of 1 year psychology MA programs. Ideally, these should be programs where the credits will transfer to Ph.D. Please let me know of any 1 year MA psychology programs! Thanks! I know BU has one...

Edit: I will post a list if I can compile one with all MAs 1-year that I encounter.

  13. Last year, I started preparing for grad school. I completed my application to Georgia Tech's psychology PhD just now, only to see at the end of the application that I am required to list fellowships to which I've applied. What? I have not applied for any fellowships! Do they require fellowships for me to be considered an applicant? Or is there something I am totally missing? Please help ASAP.

    Hi there,

I took the GRE for two times, and my scores are really awkward. I got V149, Q167, AW 5.0 for the first time, and V151, Q163, AW 3.5 for the second time. I know my score is pretty low, but which score should I send?? (I am applying to neuroscience programs)

    Thxx!!!

First scores are super impressive, and the low verbal is not concerning. I had low quant but high verbal and writing, and I've already been invited to interview at one of the two colleges I've applied for so far! Be sure the PS is good.

I think I consistently had about 156/157 on Magoosh (lower on some other practice tests), but I ended up getting 161. It really is hard to judge. Sometimes you luck out on the test, and it primarily covers the topics you were stronger at. Other times, it seems like you can't escape the concepts you were worst at.

Wonderful! So happy for you! Yeah, I was just so psyched out by the whole process. Best of luck with your apps!

  16. Congrats on a 6. You are the first person I have seen who scored 6. So impressive. I kinda feel as though that is really outstanding and it is a gold stamp verifying you are very smart, because essay writing is the number one predictor of grad school success. Again, that is awesome since I've never seen a 6.0 before.
