    Hey folks,

Long time lurker... I just signed up to share that I called York just now, and was told that anyone who has not already received a call for the advanced standing has been either waitlisted or rejected. I spoke to the Graduate Program Assistant who told me that he already personally called everyone who has been accepted.
I hope this helps everyone who has been waiting. I did not get in either. He did mention that the program is so competitive (he said possibly the most competitive, as it has an approximately 3% acceptance rate), that being accepted or denied often doesn't reflect how strong the application was. It is often decided by other factors like your research interests aligning with the research supervisors'.
    I really hope this helps!

I've been accepted to U of T and York via mail and phone call, and the online status still doesn't say if I've been accepted or a decision has been made.  Ryerson's RAMSS just changed two days after I received a  phone call offering admission.  So don't trust the online application status just yet!

I didn't think I would have this issue, but now I'm feeling all of this pressure to make the right choice for uni. CRAP, LIFE IS HURD.
Thank you everyone, for being supportive of each other and telling us your fears, advice and all of your sherlock investigation work.  This waiting was (and still is) really tough. Those people who have tried last year and the year before, I admire you for your tenacity.
Good luck and keep on going being your fabulous selves!

Hey guys, I just wanted to pipe and and say that I second this.
There have been a lot of questions on here about the size of uoft's waitlist, and the chance of getting in. I wanted to share what I've seen over the years.
Over the years I've see A LOT of my friends, classmates, co-workers, acquaintances, colleagues, whatever apply for the MSW at uoft (around 30 if you count applications and not applicants). All I can say are that from what I've seen, rejections are far and few (especially for the advanced standing), and that most of the non-acceptances are waitlists. Although I will never definitively know if this is true, it seems that a waitlist result is almost synonymous to a rejection.
I wasn't going to share this conjecture of mine because I didn't want to bring down people's hopes. But I do think that it's important for those on the waitlist not to obsess (it's not good for your health). I think that you should think of getting off the waitlist as an happy surprise. If you don't get off, that doesn't mean that you're not good enough, but know that the odds really are against you.
Again, I wasn't really going to post this because I didn't want to bring anyone down. But I think it's important to be able to move on and take up other opportunities.

Has anyone heard back from York yet? I know someone had mentioned earlier in the thread that advanced standing applicants are supposed to hear this week and 2 year applicants next week. Does anyone know from previous years whether they send out offers, rejections and waitlists all in the same couple weeks?

I called York's school of social work- they said it won't be impacting admissions at all!

I'm so sorry that you're feeling this way, @mayjohn , but – as @smntoronto said – there's still good reason to hope for U of T.
Some thoughts (that may or may not be helpful or relevant – so please ignore them, if they don't resonate and/or bring the comfort I'm intending)...
Over the years, I have seen absolutely incredible applicants not gain acceptance to MSW programs...it's been truly sobering and humbling to witness. As I said a few pages back, it's not a measure of the quality of your contributions and qualifications, but of the (ever-growing) competitiveness of Canadian MSW programs in particular: there are simply too many qualified applicants for not enough spots. I've also seen a number of forum members generously share their stories of remarkable perseverance and wise hindsight (like @kv32, above) – folks who have come to understand the immense value of the extra time they had to live life, spend time with loved ones, gain experience, and explore and refine their interests and foci. I know, intimately, how devastating rejection feels in the moment; the sadness and disappointment will eventually pass, and you will undoubtably benefit from the time and space you've had imposed upon you – the growth that comes out of struggle is a beautiful (if painful and frustrating) inevitability. Right now, though, it's important to just let yourself grieve, finding comfort in the other things that bring you joy.
With regards to your rejection from McMaster: my current university has an unwritten policy of NOT admitting former undergraduate students into their graduate programs – I know of only a very select few who have managed to circumvent this desire to bring in new blood, so to speak. Given your noted success/contributions at Mac, I'm wondering if your application suffered the consequences of this common practice.
Finally, as a child of parents with excruciatingly demanding expectations (and as a mother who did things very differently), I'll say this: do whatever you can to alleviate yourself from the burden of familial pressure (easier said than done, I know). You are a capable, independent adult with your own desires, goals, and path – while their pressure comes from a place of love and concern, you don't need to bear the brunt of their expectations along with the already immense weight of your own.

Hello all, long time lurker here... I have been anxiously waiting for a response from York U. Since a few folks in this thread have suggested that the end of February was the ETA for advanced standing (1 year) MSW decisions, and today is the last day of February, I decided to check in with the department. The dept stated that folks should start receiving responses the week of March 5th (beginning next week) for advanced standing 1 year MSW. The week after that, (beginning March 12th) is when the 2 year folks should get some news. So basically, we just need to hold on for a little while longer! Hope this is helpful.

I thought it was closer to 80 for the advanced standing? I forgot where I read that, but I know it was more for advanced and 20-30 for regular (with over 300 applicants for regular stream too).

This thread seems SO quiet compared to previous years!!! How's everyone feeling so far? I got everything sorted with my York application (I decided rather last minute to do it and had a bit of a panic, but everything's in and I'm just waiting on one more reference which I'm told is fine as their Dec 13th deadline actually has an additional ~2 weeks after it to get ALL supporting documents in) so now the freak outs have settled in!
ANYWAYS. I'm going back through last years thread (wow - there's some drama, jeez... wonder if that's why there are so few of us here this year??) and looking at the first dates candidates stated getting acceptances/rejections/waitlists and figured some of you might be interested! (PLEASE NOTE applications and rejections all seem to go out in waves and make very little sense in general - not hearing by these dates doesn't mean ANYTHING! these are all just based on the people who were commenting, who knows when the applications actually start coming out. I know we are all probably beating ourselves up a bit but: what will be will be. remember: nothing good gets away. also: last year seems to have been a little later for some places and earlier for others - there are MANY factors, I just wanted to see this for my ow personal info!)
    One year programs:
Windor's first acceptance, Feb 7th 2017 (and, around the same time, anecdotal evidence of a few rejections as well) these continue into the next week, and seem to be spread out over a few days Dalhousie (I believe 1 year?), recommended someone to the Dean on Feb 7th (still needed to be "approved by graduate studies" to be official acceptance, but I think that's a formality) Calgary's first acceptances (to the leadership specialization?), Feb 13th (via email) Laurier sends some waitlist emails, Feb 14th U of T's first acceptance, Feb 21st (via ROSI) quite a few this same date, seems to be the "first wave" York's first acceptance, Feb 23rd (via email) Laurier's first rejection, Feb 23rd (via snail mail) U of T's first waitlist, Feb 23rd (via snail mail) University of Montreal's first acceptance, Feb 24th York's first waitlist, Feb 24th (via email) UVic's first rejection, Feb 27th (email) Dalhousie's first (official) acceptance, Feb 28th (email) Carleton's first acceptance, March 1st York's first rejection, March 1st (via myfile) (*part time) York's second "round" of acceptances, March 2nd (*part time) King's (Western) first waitlist, March 3rd (email) King's first acceptance, March 3rd Windsor's first waitlist, March 3rd (email) UQAM's first acceptance, March 7th Waterloo's first acceptances, March 7th Ryerson's first acceptance, March 14th (via phone call) U of T's waitlist begins to move - one person acceped, May 11th another accepted off the wait list early June another accepted June 29th And, I didn't go quite as far, but from 2 year applicants:
UBC-O, waitlisted someone around the end of January York's first rejection, recorded Feb 3rd 2017 Carleton's first rejection, Feb 14th U of T's first rejection, Feb 15th Carleton's first acceptances, Feb 23rd UBC-O's first acceptance, March 1st King's (Western) first acceptance, March 6th (via email) more acceptances recorded March 9th, March 13th Western's first waitlist, March 8th (email) Western's first rejections, March 8th someone calls Windsor, are told acceptances have started rolling out, March 14th York's first acceptance, March 16th (myfile) more seem to be rolling out early April York's first waitlist, March 16th (email) U of T's first acceptances, March 23rd (via ACORN, as ROSI was down) apparently, all letters (acceptances, rejections, waitlists) were sent out on this day someone confirmed that ACORN didn't show all statuses - they received an "accepted" snail mail letter with nothing recorded on ACORN someone else confirmed their ROSI said "invited", ACORN said nothing, and they got a letter. who knows at this point! U of T's wait list letters begin to arrive, March 28th (via snail mail) Laurier's first acceptances, April 3rd (via email) Laurier's first waitlist, April 4th (via email) Windsor's first waitlist, April 12th (via myUWindsor) Windsor's first acceptance for the "working professionals" program, May 3rd U of T's waitlist begins to move - two people acceped, May 11th another person accepted off the waitlist, May 30th PHEW I feel like there's a ton of info to unpack there (I got carried away, it's fine). Some schools send out in waves, with rejections first. Some send out all at once (like Western's 2 year program). Feb 23rd was a popular date! Last name doesn't seem to matter at all, alphabetically speaking. Some schools send emails while others you need to check the online systems to get the info early (like U of T's ROSI). Often letters mean rejection/waitlist if you haven't heard anything else, but some people did seem to get acceptance letters before they saw anything on line. I definitely missed some stuff - sorry! But hopefully this is helpful to those of you already starting to worry just like me.
Either way. We still have time and there is no point to stressing too much (LOL). May the odds be ever in your favours!!!

    Hey there,
This is my first time using Grad Cafe, not sure if I'm posting in the right spot but I'm interested to hear from those of you who are applying for an MSW anywhere in Canada in 2018. What kind of work experience is most relevant? I've potentially found a job working in the registration department at the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario screening applicants from prospective therapists - would you say that looks favourable on an MSW application?
    Thanks for your input!
