  1. @ibtes I believe so. I have a friend that applied to some of the same programs as I did for a master's degree and she was accepted but didn't speak to faculty.
  2. @ibtes From my experience, usually how it works is faculty will reach out to you while they are reviewing your application to speak with you and get a feel for your research interests. In my case, all of these faculty members with the exception of one were professors that I had mentioned in my application. They tell you about some of the work they are currently doing/anticipating doing and try to gauge how interested you are, and whether you would be a good fit in their lab. In one case, a professor also had me speak with the graduate students in her lab. From my understanding, the faculty then submit a recommendation to the committee (i.e. they do or do not recommend you for the program). Some times there is a time gap between when the committee meets to make a decision and when they actually draft acceptance letters and send them out. During this period, the faculty that you have spoken to may email you and basically say "hey, you should except an acceptance letter in a few days!" I think it depends on the school and whether or not you enter the program knowing what faculty you will work with or whether they do lab rotations during the first year.
  3. Just got my interview email for UK study.
  4. The first round of Stanford notices for civil/environmental seem to be going out according to the results page...cue anxiety
  5. How does it work then if two students that they spoke with both decide to attend?
  6. Just curious, does anyone know if professors often reach out to multiple students that they are interested in? I assume that they wouldn't want to put all their eggs in one basket.
  7. @EllaHuang that's still a good thing though! I got an email from a professor at Carnegie Mellon today so I assume they're in the reviewing process, in case anyone else applied there.
  8. FYI I have a friend that applied to the masters program at Michigan and she just heard back yesterday. Do masters students usually hear back later than PhDs?
  9. Not yet. Do you guys know of anyone else that applied to civil/environmental programs and if they have heard back from any schools?
  10. Cool! I haven't seen many transportation students. Also I didn't realize Northwestern was so popular
  11. I agree, it does seem like a cool school. I really like their emphasis on "whole brain engineers." I also applied to Carnegie Mellon, and then 2 reach schools Stanford and MIT (don't really expect to hear back from those lol). Are you pursuing a master's or PhD in civil/environmental?
  12. @STEMinist I replied on the other thread but no you should not be concerned. Being invited to an Open House is always a good thing! I didn't have an interview but I would prepare for that just in case, whether formal or informal.
  13. Hi guys. I haven't seen many Civil & Environmental Engineering applicants on the site so I figured I would start a thread for the few that exist. I would love to know what schools people have already heard back from. So far I have been accepted to PhD programs at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Virginia Tech, and Northwestern.
  14. I got the email that I am a semi-finalist for a study grant in the UK. 110% was expecting flat out rejection. Best of luck to everyone else!
  15. @wdb17 I actually was in the same situation. My status was 'held' for over a month, I had an interview, wasn't selected for the position, and was still on 'held' status. So I emailed GEM today because I wanted to make sure that that company hadn't just forgotten to release me and I was worried it would compromise my chances with other companies. They replied and basically reiterated what they have said before about statuses, but also said that you apparently remain visible despite your status. Here is a direct quote: Thank you for contacting us at The National GEM Consortium. You will see your homepage Employer status change from unmatched, to matched, to released, to held as your application is previewed by several Employers. Do not be concerned with this status. All employers can still review all applicants at anytime. Thank you, The National GEM Consortium
  16. @balaenopter_a Did you interview with the employer? If so, how long did it take to hear back from them?
  17. Went from 'matched' to 'held', been on 'held' status for about a week now, finally got an email from a company regarding an interview. It wasn't any of the ones I listed but that's ok. Hoping it goes well. Best of luck guys!
