  1. In my non-expert opinion, I feel like your best bet moving forward would be to get your letters from your undergraduate lab and the two professors (former PI and former course professor). I essentially had the same LOR. 1 from my undergrad PI, 1 from a professor I took several courses with, and the last from my current supervisor at work. The advice I was given the first time I applied was to get as many professors who know you well enough academically to write you letters AND someone who can speak to your work ethic. If the rec from the suicide hotline is more of a form letter, that might not put your best foot forward. In terms of the professor you could potentially have a stronger relationship with around application season...I wouldn't want to put my third egg in an uncertain basket when it comes to these applications.

But those are just my thoughts based on advice I've been given the past few years!

    Hi guys,

I'm pretty late to the party but I thought I'd contribute. I'm applying for both Ed.S and Psy.S programs in School Psychology. I applied to Grand Valley State University, Michigan State, University of Toledo, Central Michigan University, Wayne State University, and Ball State. At the beginning of February, I completed all of my interviews in a 2-week time frame. I interviewed at Central Michigan, Grand Valley, Wayne State, and the University of Toledo. I was rejected already from Central Michigan, Michigan State, and Ball. Still waiting on Wayne and GVSU. I was accepted to the University of Toledo this week, and I'm am super excited! It was my first choice after Michigan State's rejection. I was very impressed with their program and the students and staff were awesome.

My interview at Wayne was atrocious, they were super nasty and rude. I understand that in some interviews they really grill you, but they became very rude midway through. I don't plan on waiting for their response, I'm figuring it is a no at this point. Would love to hear if anyone else has interviewed with them, my friend is supposed to for the same program but might cancel because of the disorganization of it all.

I wish I would have found this forum sooner! It would have been great for those grad school admissions worries.

Congrats on your acceptance! That's so great!

I don't have any input about Wayne State's interview (I didn't apply), BUT I will say that I got into one program last year and I chose not to go because I was really turned off by the way everyone was acting on interview day. I won't name the program, but it sucks because I think sometimes they forget that you're also there to scope them out and see if you could see yourself working with the faculty and students. Usually interview days can even seem fake if everyone is slapping on a happy attitude, but it's pretty telling if they're being rude and nasty. If your friend is interested in the program, I don't think it would hurt if they still went to the interview. Maybe there were some other factors that contributed to your bad interview day and they will have pulled it together by the time your friend goes.

Just received an email this morning from UNC Chapel Hill's school psychology program for me to complete a qualtrics survey by Feb. 10th in reference to potential funding opportunities for which I might qualify. This is the first email I receive from this particular program. Wondering if this means I will be interviewed/considered for admittance. I'm not really sure how this particular program does it. Has anyone else received any similar emails from Chapel Hill or any other program?

Yeah I got the same email this morning and have no idea what to make of it...

  4. Have you tried to google the POI to see what comes up? If I didn't have a CV beforehand, I at least got information from researchgate(dot)net. I don't have much information about emailing POIs after being invited to interview. Typically, it would have been ideal to email them prior to application deadlines.

If you decide to email anyone, it might be best to email current students if their information is available. If you do email a professor and they sign off with a first name, I would still use "Professor X" or "Dr. Y" since you don't know them yet.

Yes!! I can’t stress enough how important this is.

Faculty are usually pretty forgiving because they know interviews are a stressful time. But they WILL remember it if you’re unpleasant to be around, competitive, or clearly trying to overshadow the other applicants. At the interview stage, professors and grad students are really trying to find someone they want to work with for the next 5+ years. And chances are, that is not going to be the person who spends 20 minutes talking about their CV at the interview social event.

I would also like to add that you don’t want to be THAT person who’s being a Debby downer the whole time. At one of my interviews, another applicant kept complaining about how early she had to wake up that morning and how she had no idea how she was going to fit in all of her interviews ?. The worst part was that she didn’t turn off the negative vibes when we were speaking to current students! They are on the lookout for our personalities too, and she continued to be just as negative with them. She may have been nervous or something, but after that day was over, I knew that I would not want to be in a cohort with her.

Try to keep it together and remember how amazing it is that you were invited to interview for that program!

What are some questions people have asked non-POI faculty members?

I asked a non-POI about things specific to the program. I asked about the best part of the program from the faculty side. I’ve also asked what brought them to X university. I feel like that helped me get a better picture of the program and why it has to offer everyone there.

I was wondering if anyone applied to U of Washington or U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill? If so, have you heard back?

    Thanks!

On the website, UNC says that decisions for admissions begins in January and February. I haven't seen anything regarding Chapel Hill's admissions this cycle yet. I might reach out to them next week about it...

How normal is it to not have heard back at all from 20 out of 21 schools yet (one sent out rejection already)?

Just trying to brace myself for the harsh reality...

I wouldn't think too much into it at this point. They're going into the winter break, so if they haven't met yet, they probably won't until after the break.

Has anyone heard from Temple yet?  I think one online calendar said their interview date would be mid-January (I think 1/14) but only two people have posted on the results tab about interview invites, and each reference different dates (1/14 and 2/14).

I got an interview invite for the School Psych program at Temple! Their interview day is January 14th, and I got an email from the program coordinator on the 14th.

  10. From what I've learned as I look into School Psychology programs, they still want to know what your research interests could be. Programs also understand that interests change overtime and whatever you state as an interest may not be what you end up studying. Also, if you have experience teaching and your research interests are related, it would show that you have practical experience related to what you'd like to study. I'm in a similar boat where I know what my research interests are but my research experiences are not related to that topic at all! If you have interests that you'd like to investigate, I would definitely add them. And then you can wrap that into how it relates to your career interests!

(I'm applying this cycle and not in a program, so this is based on what I've learned in my school psych research. Hope it helps!)

    School: University of Connecticut (UCONN)

    Type: PhD

    Date of invite: 1/14

    Type of invite: POI email

    Interview date(s): 1/30 or 2/2

This was a big surprise, as POI is not as close of a fit as those at other programs and I thought that all invitations had been extended. I was actually searching the results page when I received the email!

Congrats! Would you mind PMing me the initials of your POI?
