I'm glad you brought up these points. The MA funding is indeed abysmal as you said, which is why my POI told me they would fund me as if I was PhD level from their own lab money. So that takes care of that. But that was the other concern I had - about practicums. I realize the GTA is full of good practicum placements.
Definitely gave me something to think about and therefore leaning more towards OISE now. Also curious about SSHRC funding as I only applied for that at Western.

Who was the PI? Also feel free to DM if you want more info! That's great since they do not offer funding. It is very rare to do you PhD practicums elsewhere (they are pretty prescribed in the program). I know alot of my friends who are currently in the PhD program only started doing assessments in their second year, and practicum placements where a bit shocked by the lack of training. Did you apply to OGS?

Following up on this from before. Received "recommendation for admission" from Western this morning as well. Someone else in this thread asked me if Western is planning to get accredited. I inquired about that this morning with the PI and I was told that all paperwork has been completed and submitted, the school is just waiting to hear back from CPA.

Was partially hoping to get rejected from one of them, as I'm not sure which school to choose between OISE and Western. Only decisive factor I can think of is if I get SSHRC at Western (didn't list OISE as a school in the research portal because I didn't think I'd ever get accepted at OISE...).

I know people in the program and while it will most likely become accrediated, you get no actual practicum experience (e.g., assessment/therapy) in your masters. In the event that you do not want to pursue the PhD, you do not have the tangable skills to even do work under supervision. Also, the program is not funded in the MA. Of course go with research interests, but I would follow up to see if they will provide these experiences. Most MA programs have significantly more and was a reason I rejected.

For those who don't follow the results page, thought I should post here as well.
Had an interview at UofT/OISE Feb. 7th for the School and Clinical Child  (with PIs not listed on my application), and this morning (16th) was told they have submitted a recommendation for me to be admitted.
Morning of 15th got an interview invitation with the two PIs I listed on my application for Western Ontario for the School and Applied Child Psychology program (they're getting accredited this year) - interview is Friday the 18th with both PIs (same time; I assume co-supervision potentially).
This is my third year applying.

Western has been saying they will get accredited for years.... what did they say?

Hi Everyone, do you know how the non-renewable CGSM works? So if you get non-renewable funding for a year (1st year of Masters) do you need to apply for the PhD level for your second year of Masters, or do you have to apply only to provincial awards for the second year? Of course this structure assumes a two year Masters and then the PhD.

Only provincial! CGSM has a lifetime maximum of one year! You could then apply at the end of second year for the CGS-D award.

Hi all, what do you guys think about going into social work vs. psych research? I ideally wanted to do clinical and after my third year applying, I still haven't been accepted. My passion is psych but I think I really need a practical element to my career. I feel like doing an MSW at UofT will be very clinically-oriented and be really similar to clinical psych. Any thoughts?? and no I will not be applying to clinical psych again LOL

MSW is a great option for clinical work. There is also a lot of opportunity in the field right now!

    Hi Everyone,

I got my acceptance from Western University for Counselling a few weeks ago. However, I also got an acceptance for a Masters of Social Work. The social work program is actually offering essentially free tuition in scholarships and after reviewing the colleges regulations for both professions a social worker is able to perform psychotherapy (after 2 years supervision)  and counsel clients as soon as they graduate; versus the counselling programs in Ontario only gives 200ish hours of practicum and you need 1000 to register to be a psychotherapist and also need to write the EEEP exam to be certified whereas social work you do not need these things. I talked with a social worker, counsellor, psychologist and all say the same: The overlap in the professions is massive and you can get to the same point career wise and see the same clients in the same settings as other mental health professionals. Ultimately this is leading me to reject my offer from Western University for counselling and pursue social work.

Some of you will be skeptical about this and possibly think it is dumb of me to do social work instead of doing counselling (which admittedly i thought of myself) but the social justice work, the ability to counsel and the opportunity to be at the same spot as a psychotherapist seems too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially with the scholarships. I say this all because like you folks, Ive been on this forum and experienced rejection from schools and been discouraged. However, please take some time to think about other avenues to get to the same spot, occupational therapists, social workers, nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, and psychologists among some others can all perform a lot of the same tasks. I wanted counselling and thought that was the only route until I learned about social work and their ability to do psychotherapy and it completely changed my view on where my career is going to go and what I value and actually want.

Good luck to everyone in the coming school year, round of applications and everything else. Im more than willing to answer any questions or concerns or PM me if you want to talk more.

As a graduate of this program (UWO) and currently working in the field - I agree. Feel free to message me!
