  1. Short answer: yes Long answer: My day job is hiring people so I'm pretty familiar with current practices when it comes to US work authorization. It definitely would be helpful to know which field you're going into but here's the basics of how things work for now (who knows where we're headed with the current administration ) Like Lemma said most students use their year of OPT to establish themselves in the job market, with a STEM degree you can extend to get a second year of OPT. After that you need a company to sponsor you for an H1B visa. This can be tricky depending on your field since sponsorship is expensive and part of the requirement for an H1B visa is that it would be difficult to find a US citizen or permanent resident who's qualified for the job. Essentially what this means is the more in demand your skill set is and the higher your degree level is higher the likelihood of getting an H1B. If you hold a Master's or PhD it might be easier to get sponsorship, but gain it would depend on your field. Any more specifics would probably help give me a better idea of what info is useful to you.
  2. Has anyone else NOT heard back from Arizona yet? I'm assuming I've probably been rejected but my application status still just says submitted.
  3. @Grace Bones I'm going to be studying linguistics! The term doesn't start until late septemeber though, so I'll probably get there right as it starts to get cold.
  4. @TheWillToDo I applied to the linguistics MA. I applied back in December, and I still haven"t heard anything
  5. I applied to SFU and I'm currently in the US. I'm not sure when we're supposed to hear back, but the portal has been incredibly unhelpful.
  6. Is anyone else freaking out a lil bit that UCSD sent out a late open house invitation? I thought I could write it off as rejection and be done with it. Now I'm back to refreshing my email like a crazy person
  7. tagging onto your post since I'm also from WA going to the UK for school! I'm getting my MA from the University of Manchester. I have a couple friends in London, but I've never been to Manchester and I'd love any tips on what the area's like/ what to expect from a UK grad program.
  8. Has anyone heard from UT Austin? There's one comment about an interview from last week, but nothing since then. I just wanna know so I can stop obsessively checking my email
  9. SOAS and Kent both have a few funding opportunities, Manchester (my top choice) doesn't have as many (of course ). Most of the deadlines for scholarships and such have passed, but in general even with the international tuition it's much more affordable. UK Master's programs are only a year long and around 20k in tuition plus, if you want it, you're guaranteed student housing at most of them. The applications were pretty easy just the statement of purpose and 2 letters or rec and no GREs! Plus they all do rolling admission so the longest I waited to hear back was about 2 weeks. Even if you're on the fence I'd recommend looking at some programs and applying since there's no application fee for most of the schools. I chose Manchester because you take 2 courses entirely dedicated to research methods and writing for linguistics before writing your MA dissertation which will hopefully make up for my lack of undergrad research
  10. OMG this thread is such a relief to find! I got accepted to all the MA programs I applied to (they're all in the UK), but I'm waiting on PhD programs and I have a feeling I won't be getting into any of them this round. But my ultimate goal is also to go into language preservation! I went to a small liberal arts school so I didn't really have any opportunities for research and we didn't even have a full linguistics department. Major: Spanish and Russian Minors: Linguistics and Computer ScienceGPA: 3.46 GRE: V 164, Q 154, AW 3.0 (yikes )Schools: UT Austin, U of A, UCSB & UCSD ( reaches obvi), Manchester (accepted), Kent (accepted), University of London SOAS (accepted) I've been working for almost two years now in an unrelated field so we'll see what ends up happening! Good luck to everyone and hopefully the wait doesn't drive any of us too crazy.
