2019 Applicants

Not a bad news at all! Congrats. Hope you'll succeed in getting into the final final round. Since I applied to their comp lit track I really have no idea how the admission process is like. Guess we'll also hear back from them next week then. -

Congrats! I know I should not pin much hope on this top dream program when I did not receive the interview. Having completed my MA at Chicago and taken tons of classes in Comp Lit, I think it'd be ideal to do scholarly work as well as live there. Hope you'll say yes -

Fabulous! No Californian schools on my list this year, cuz I've heard about the lack of funding in those CA schools, especially for international students. I'm sure whoever is fortunate to go there will have a blast though. Best to your applications as well. -

Got it! Very helpful anecdote. Where did your friend end up attending? -

Thanks for the info and encouragement! It's certainly an honor and achievement to be on the shorter list and get the interviews. Best of luck with your interview! -

Congrats! I'm desperate to hear from Columbia as well. May I ask what your areas of interest are, just so I could gauge whether I should expect an implied rejection from this last dream school? PS: In my SOP I indicate interest in working with Prof. Sarah Cole, and my focus is on global modernism (US., UK, China, etc.). Thanks so much! -

One of my favorite lyrics! Perfect for my scenario as well.

Anyone else doing comp lit?

Got it! Thanks...I'm sure a similar email will be waiting for me tomorrow. -

Hi! So sorry to hear about all our rejections...but I like the idea that these are opportunities for reflection and further growth. I've been dying to hear back from Cornell as well, although I'm pretty sure it's an implied rejection. May I ask whether you received an email about it? -

On the same boat—got the rejection from them as well. Hug... -
May I ask who your POI would be if you were to come to Chicago? My friend takes several classes in the history department, so I've heard some reviews/commentary about a few Chinese/Japanese history professors.

Thank you for the information! Congratulations to you as well, and I hope you'll enjoy the campus visit. My POI was not even on the committee this year, so I don't pin much hope on the acceptance. Fingers crossed that I'll at least be on the waitlist (if they have one)... -

Heartfelt congratulations! It's such a great program, and the campus is gorgeous. May I ask whether you received the campus visit invitation, and, if so, when the visit will be? -
Thank you, Naito! Although most of the remaining seven schools are in "implied rejection" status now, I'll keep waiting...

Sorry I wasn't clear in my last message: the offers I received from these two schools last year were MAs. Definitely the UChicago comp lit! Such a bummer that my adviser is gonna be on leave next year, which was one of the reasons that I was not on the shortlist. The comp lit programs at Northwestern and Cornell are also great for my research directions.

Hi! No words from Northwestern yet. I emailed the program coordinator and was told the following: "We hope to have our final admissions decisions made soon. Please be sure to check CollegeNet. We appreciate your patience and understanding." Dying to hear from them too--I so hope to get to stay in Chicago... -
It's my second time applying to PhD programs lol; last year I was on the waitlist of UC Irvine's comp lit program and received offers from UChicago and Oxford. I do think a prestigious MA program is in many ways conducive to a more successful Ph.D. applications, but so many factors come into play... Please let us know where you'll embark on the next academic journey!

Huge congratulations! It would be incredible to work with Ronald Egan.

Thank you! Yeah I love that 對聯 as well--we all need it at this point. I might have to reapply next year: no acceptance so far. It is somewhat frustrating that even an MA at UChicago (where I was the cash cow) could not help me get into a Ph.D. program this year to work with the scholars I yearn to consult with, but looking back there is not a single moment that I'd regret having come to UChicago. I've grown so much here and encountered many amazing people. But if the program was not partially funded I wouldn't have come in the first place. Sigh...funding in the Humanities.... 事不過三;I'll give myself the last chance in 2018!

Sorry for replying this late--traveling and work have made my life more hectic than ever! I'm so thrilled you mentioned Yeats; in fact, my MA thesis is on the extent of secularism in the literary utopias of his two "Byzantium" poems and Tao Yuanming's "Peach Blossom prose&poem 桃花源记并诗." The Irish/Chinese comparison in poetry and poetics study certainly sounds uncommon, which is why I am prepared for a rather arduous journey of Ph.D. applications, but I'm sure this angle could contribute in many ways to the field. We'll see!

Thanks so much! Already added to my book list. Wow, sounds like you'll become an aspiring comparatist in East Asian Studies, where you can be truly 如鱼得水.
-
Generally speaking, comp lit departments are downsizing due to sweeping budgeting issues, whereas East Asian Studies as a discipline is growing with more abundant donations and more promising job market. But again within the EALC there are so many options for language and discipline of focus, so a department's preference varies from school to school, from one year to another. Very hard to say... But based on your interest I assume you'd benefit more from and better enjoy training in Comp Lit? Definitely worth experimenting with during your Master's!

@spicyramenThanks! For UChicago's Comp Lit I gave up my hope a long while ago (they only admit 2 students every year), but I do wish to get into Northwestern. I don't mind applying again this year, but I'd hate packing all my stuff lol. Anyways, we should definitely meet up when the opportunity comes~
