Have you guys decided on which schools to attend? @scared @mungbean_ @BME_Engineering @lafry @DCap
    Just wondering :S

    Yes I am attending Duke!

It really wasn't a difficult decision for me. Duke is super industry focused, which is the reason I'm attending graduate schools. It's also has a very lively school population, which is what I love. I visited a couple of weeks ago, and here is what I learned:

The BME department is super close, like a family! The classes are difficult but most have many projects that you get hands-on experience with, which are meant to be able to put these many projects on your CV for internships and jobs later on. They really want you to succeed! The campus is also absolutely breathtaking! Many students chose the project track instead of the thesis track, and base this off of either one of their class projects or a project from their lab.

Overall, I think this program fits me the best and will provide the best opportunity to get a great job afterwards.

  2. Hello! I wanted to open this back up for 2018! :)

I am attending Duke for a BME Master's in the fall and am currently looking for apartments. My main questions are:

    1. How do people go about finding grad student roommates? I'd prefer not to live alone, but I don't know anyone else in the area.

    2. Which areas/complexes are the best for graduate students? I've currently been looking at the area north of Erwin road, since its the closest (0.5mi) to the BME buildings and I can walk to class. However, I am not sure if it is full of undergraduates or is the safest. The other areas are ninth street, and Central Park/Downtown.

Here's the list of apartments I've found online that I like:

Belmont, Lofts at Lakewood, Berkshire Ninth Street, Station Nine, Liberty Warehouse and West Village

    3. How far in advance should I be applying? I have read on this thread that you don't need to apply well ahead of time. If I'm not moving in until August, I am worried that there won't be any openings in the ones that I like. I am visiting in about a week and a half and might tour a couple of places.

If anyone has any advice/any other questions, please let me know! Hopefully will be able to have extra insight once I visit later in March!

  3. Thanks for creating this!! I didn't actually apply to JHU's BME MS program... but I'm pretty similar to @scared in that my main two school's I'm looking at are UMich and Duke. However, I'm pretty set on Duke since its more prestigious and better weather than UMich! I am visiting Duke in a couple of weeks, so if you have questions about it, let me know!! I've also visited UMich a few years ago. so here are my thoughts [sorry in advance that I have so many lol]:

UMich: Not as prestigious, but the main thing is that is is Public, which can make a huge difference in the atmosphere. It is large, and going to be a 'typical' American university. That said, they do have a very strong following in Engineering and the Alumni I think is quite strong since they are so large. Ann Arbor is also a cute college town, but very small. Additionally, the Engineering Campus is actually like a 10 min drive from the home campus, so its kind of isolating. However, Ann Arbor does have that midwestern, hometown feel where community is super important and everyone is SO SO nice!!

Duke: The best thing about Duke is that BME is like their "thing," so they have great resources for their students. While it is private, they do have a really strong sense of school spirit, so its sort of more typical. Based on what I found online, its a very collaborative environment, and people have a very good work/play balance, and its not a competitive environment. Alumni base is also very strong. My friend from NC also said that Durham is a super fun place to be for young people, so I don't think that living there is a disadvantage. UNC I think is right near there so theres tons of student-oriented events. I have heard their campus is beautiful! Also you can't beat Duke Basketball haha

JHU: For those accepted to JHU, I have also been there haha! Its a super tiny campus, like you can walk around it in like 10min. In my opinion, Baltimore is also not a great city to do stuff in and isn't necessarily the safest, but there is a small area right next to campus that is cute that I think students tend to stay at. Much like Duke, BME is their "thing", which is a positive. However, I have heard its a hyper competitive atmosphere, which is why many of my friends at school didn't apply. I have heard that groups form that only help each other, and its not a collaborative atmosphere, and that people can be cutthroat to be the best. One girl I know also said that their hospital is not as tied in with the program anymore, which is what has given the program its prestige. Overall, I didn't end up applying because I didn't love the feel of the campus/town, and the competitive atmosphere.

Overall, the most important thing is how the school aligns with your interests - so its great to take a look at the research options they have and the classes they offer! Also, its about where you would be happiest, regardless of the rankings, all 3 of these schools are fantastic and offer great opportunities!! :)

I applied to USC's MS biomedical engineering program but have not heard back from them. The app portal says everything has been submitted on time. Do they stagger admissions? Or is it a rolling admissions process? Admittedly, I submitted the app very close to the deadline, so maybe they notified you because you submitted your materials before me?

I just got my offer of admission, and I submitted my fully completed application in December - much before the deadline. Some of my seniors from college got theirs in March when they applied last year. So I'm not sure how this process works.

Then again, I'm international....does that make a difference?

On another note, does anybody know when the last date to accept/decline this offer is?

Yes I believe they do a rolling admission... But I can't say for sure. I also submitted mine in early December, which I guess led me to have an earlier acceptance. However, I do know they have the admitted students welcome day march 23rd, so they've gotta accept/reject everyone by then.

I got an email after my acceptance that said May 15th is the deadline.

  5. Just accepted to Northwestern's BME (biomedical engineering) MS program!

Have now been accepted to from 3 programs: Northwestern, Duke, and USC

Still waiting to hear back from UCLA, University of Michigan, University of Washington, and Purdue

Duke was my top choice (ranked higher), but Northwestern is also a great school. Do you guys think Northwestern is worth visiting? I am planning on attending Duke's admit day on April 6th, but Northwestern's deadline to respond is March 23rd. Any advice on what to do? Much help appreciated! :)

    Hi all!

I'm super glad to see a lot of BMEs

    Field/Program: Biomedical Engineering M.S. Fall '18

Schools: UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, USC, Duke & JHU

Status? Nothing T_T a little nervous since @lafry has heard back from USC (USC and UCLA were my safeties..)

    @mungbean_

    me too!

do you mind posting your profile?

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about it; I think USC just admits as they read your applications, and I submitted mine in early December, well before their deadline!

    @scared

    My stats are:

Bioengineering B.S. at top public school

    GRE: 160v/168Q/5.0

GPA: 3.75 (major), slightly lower overall

2 years research on campus, 1 research internship at major hospital, senior design project

no publications, but hoping my 3 good rec letters make up for it!

I was also worried I didn't apply to enough safety schools - then I was accepted to USC so it calmed me down! :)

Applied: UCLA, USC (accepted), JHU, Duke, Northwestern, UMich, Purdue, U Washington

    What do you guys think?

anybody heard from any biomedical programs yet? USC, UCSD, Duke, UMich, etc.

I have been accepted to USC BME! I didn't apply to UCSD, so i'm not sure what their timeline is. However, by the looks of it on the results pages Duke and UMich don't notify until march... so I'm guessing same with UCSD, since they are all top programs. I have not heard back from any other programs yet (UW, UCLA, Northwestern, Purdue, JHU), though. I will keep my earlier post updated though! :)

  9. Thanks for the information! They had mentioned that they would let everyone know of their final decisions, so I'm a bit bummed they didn't even contact me officially to let me know I wasn't invited to interview. Do you mind me asking when your interview was?

Best of luck to you! :)

  10. I have email notifications on my phone -- so every time I see that I get an email, my heart drops. I just look at it right away, most of the time its not from schools.  So far, only have gotten one email notifying me of a decision (acceptance, thank goodness).

I think its just better to look at it right away, that way you don't have to have to agonize over it all day. Waiting won't change the decision!

    Best of luck to you!

  11. Has anyone heard back from Johns Hopkins CBID (Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design) MSE program yet? Online says first round interviews would be mid-late January yet I've heard nothing back yet (its Jan 31), and haven't seen reports of anyone else hearing back yet either.
