tell me about it, the wait for fellowships sucks since it can be 3-5 months before you hear back ?

I'm just watching anime and better call saul in the mean time ?

Hello! Just joined to add another data point. I’m also 2/28 for Biosciences. If this does mean something, I’m a little surprised. The worst part of my app is my GRE score; however, I’m already in grad school. Everything else is more solid, but going off of merit, I felt having that lower score may not get me very far.

Wishing everyone the best and hoping to end the wait soon?

I don't think GRE scores matter that much tbh. So long as you didn't do *horribly* on it, and by that, I mean like 40th percentile or something crazy like that, I think you're fine.

If NSF can do it, so can NDSEG ??

idk, I just feel horrible. Worked my butt off on that application. And sincerely did the best I could. It feels like a slap in the face.

Also they called back and said not to worry about the date and that 'everybody' is still in the running. I'll trust them on this.

To play Devil's advocate, they could have said this in an attempt to calm everyone down and make people less anxious.

Erm so I found a ppt while searching for something on a different fellowship and in it are two slides from the lady that is the DoD program manager for this fellowship and they have selection criteria (loosely) and a proposed timeline though unsure how this holds up given everything going on in the world rn.

    slides 30-37 for those interested

I don't think I got it. The last updated date is 12/24 for me, which squarely lies in the preliminary review panel.  No updates beyond that. RIP.

NDSEG got back to me and said they expect results to be out no later than April 15th, but they don't have anything more concrete than that.

Thanks for this. Did they say anything about the "last application update" ? I guess not if they don't have anything more concrete.

  7. From my understanding, they do three rounds of review. The first is that they look at GPA and GRE/MCAT scores, then cut out some. Out of those, they then look at the proposal/essay, then cut out some. And finally, they forward to DoD who make the final selection. My understanding is that they don't necessarily take the highest GPAs, but rather pair the GPA with the student's ability.

Pairing this with the "last updated" date, I doubt I made it far.

Two years ago was a different contractor, so I wouldn't put too much stock into what they did, I think Sysplus is pretty organized relative to the others that ran it in previous years

That's a good point. I guess you're right. Fantasizing about different dates isn't going to make the result come out sooner.

Ah OK, makes sense. I don't think that's the case --- I emailed one of the administrators in early March and he said that in March, apps go to the DoD selection panel, which finishes evaluating the applications in April, so the actual decisions aren't made until then (aka early April). Since we're in such limbo, I emailed the administrator to see when exactly we should hear back.

This is interesting. Two years ago, they mentioned whether applicants were moving on to subject matter experts or not. Maybe a date in early March means they've moved on the application to subject matter experts?

Also interestingly, a previous poster reached out to the NDSEG and they said the following:

"The validation process is complete, and all validated applications have been forwarded to the panel. You won't see any additional status updates beyond 'Submitted' on the application until the selection is made in April 2020, at which time all applicants will receive a notification of their selection status." Hmm, I wonder if we're just reading too deeply into the dates?

I think people are hypothesising that there is an internal system where they track who has received the reward and who will not get it. Like a Boolean value or something. And if this Boolean value changes, then that date changes.

Here are the emails I was sent:

10 AM on 12/6/19 "Application Submission Confirmation"

12:30 PM on 12/10/19 “Application has been Validated”

Nothing more besides that. In the portal my application reads "Under Evaluation"

Mm, those are the two emails I've received as well. I guess we will have to wait and see. But, knock on wood, I have a promising feeling about your application !

Curious to see if anyone else sees this too, application updated last 2/28/20. Could mean nothing at all but dang, its hard to wait.

Did you have anything missing from your application? Did you receive an email on that date from them? I guess probably not. But chances are you got it ! :D

  13. I have 12/24/2019, which is my submission date. Given that, I doubt I got really far in the application process. It's a bummer since I really did my best on the application. I won't keep my expectations super high, but it is a blow. :-(

  14. I guess it''s best to be patient. Easier said than done. But it'll come ! ?

I feel like Cartman in that SP episode where he tries to wait for the Wii, but freezes himself because he's impatient.

Hopefully it isn't delayed! I know the GRFP reviews are all virtual -- maybe it's the same with the NDSEG?

Seems like it isn't ! Looks like the website itself says April 2020. Has anyone received any email communications yet? It seems very silent out there...

  16. I wonder if it will be delayed due to the Coronavirus issue. I think the chances of it are less, since they probably could work from home. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed. Oh well. I will have waited for a few months, so I can wait another.
