  1. I am soooooo annoyed by one of my LOR writers (yes, the same one I had previously complained about). The worst part is that he is one of my favorite people and I hate having to constantly remind him about deadlines. I sent him a list of deadlines, I send the recommendation link 1 week before the application is due and I send a reminder message the day before it is due. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE I CAN DO. Also because I have him as a friend on Facebook I know when he is online, and I just want to tell him l"dude you have internet access, you have submitted most of my letters you just need to change the name of the school and upload them it's not that hard"! I know that he is probably busy because has young children and they are time consuming but he submitted one of the letters like two weeks in advance, why can't he do that with the last two? I am so close to being done with my applications. I just want to not think about them.
  2. Worries: I'm worried I applied too early. I feel like I should have waited at least one more year before reapplying to grad school. I just started an independent research project at work that could really help my application and I did not include it in my CV or my SoP because I hadn't started it then. I do not have a lot of experience so this would have really helped but also if I don't get in this time I don't think I have the patience to put my life on hold for another year and apply a third time. Excitement: Last year I applied mostly to Masters programs and a PhD for shits and giggles, but this year I am 100% sure that I want a PhD and that this is the right decision for me. Considering I am a very anxious and indecisive person it feels great to be sure about something for once.
  3. Hi folks! I thought it wouldn't be a bad a idea to start one of these threads for Anthropology. So, if there's anyone out there who is applying this year, I thought it would be nice to have a space to talk about applications (at least those that have a January deadline), iterviews, results...all that nerve-racking stuff ?‍♀️ I guess I'll start: I'm applying to PhD programs at CU Boulder, CUNY, UIUC, NYU, Harvard, UF, UCSD, Vanderbilt, and American University. I am interested in social/cultural anthropology. I'm mostly done with my apps, just waiting for my professors to submit their LORs, which has been kind of stressful. So yeah, let's talk!
  4. I hate this so much, I am in the same situation!! I have an application due today and my professor still hasn't submitted it. I sent them the recommendation link yesterday and I also emailed them today telling them that I sent the link. I bet they're busy and stuff and it's the end of the semester but they also said that they would submit it yesterday. What really upsets me is that they were once in our position so they know how stressful it is!!!
  5. Hey! I had the same question so I did a little digging and found this thread: One poster mentions that the email from U Penn Annenberg mentions the deadline, in bold red letters, so probably they do? Based on this thread, I would say that telling your recommenders that your applications are due earlier than they actually are is not the best idea, but if you ask them if they could submit it by a certain date that would be fine. Basically just be honest with your recommenders, they probably went through the same process and they understand how stressful it is but at the same time they are doing you a huge favor so it would be wrong to lie. I personally decided to email my recommenders reminding them of the deadlines, just to make sure that they had them. I also let them know that some of the schools I am applying to actually say that it is the applicant's responsibility to make sure that recommenders submit their letters before the deadline. I think it depends on the type of relationship you have with your recommenders. Either way, I hope this helped and good luck!
  6. I just finished writing the first draft of my SOP and would really appreciate it if someone would take a look at it. I just graduated from college so I don't have a lot of research experience. I have just had a couple of internships in the summer and they were kind of research related but not in Anthropology. My professors and many people I have talked to have told me that I need to have a really strong SOP with a solid research proposal because I do not have that much experience, but I am worried that I focus too much on that. I am also willing to swap SOPs although I am not so sure I can provide much insight. Either way, any type of feedback is more than welcome. PM me and I'll send it to you. Thank you!
  7. @Warelin Thank you so much! I will look into these programs.
  8. Hi everyone! I am reapplying to grad school after failing miserably this year and would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. I applied to only three programs (2 MAs and one PhD) because I honestly did not know what I wanted to do. I got into American University's Public Anthropology MA program with some money (I was still unable to afford it) and Syracuse's Anthropology PhD without funding. I want to be accepted into a program that I can actually afford and was actually considering getting an MA before a PhD but I just can't afford one and it's hard to get funding as an international student. I recently graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Anthropology and a 3.6 GPA in both my major and overall. My GRE scores are 160Q/165V/4.0 AW. I am interested in Cultural Anthropology and am looking for more of an Applied Anthropology focus. My area of interest is Latin America, specifically Central America, and I have done work in education, but I am also interested in social justice and issues of identity, politics, human rights... I have had a couple of summer internships where I've done research related to education but I haven't really published anything. I am considering applying to UC Boulder, Vanderbilt, CUNY, Syracuse, McGill, UT Austin, NYU and Teacher's College-Columbia University (all of them Anthropology PhDs except for Columbia which would be a PhD in Applied Anthropology) What are my chances? Is this a good list of schools? Are there any other schools that have a focus on Latin America? Should I even be applying to PhD programs? Please share your thoughts, I could really use some feedback. Thank you!
