  1. The following appeared in a memorandum from the owner of Movies Galore, a chain of video rental stores. “In order to reverse the recent decline in our profits, we must reduce operating expenses at Movies Galore’s ten video rental stores. Since we are famous for our special bargains, raising our rental prices is not a viable way to improve profits. Last month our store in downtown Marston significantly decreased its operating expenses by closing at 6:00 P.M. rather than 9:00 P.M. and by reducing its stock by eliminating all movies released more than five years ago. Therefore, in order to increase profits without jeopardizing our reputation for offering great movies at low prices, we recommend implementing similar changes in our other nine Movies Galore stores.” Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. The recommendation provided cannot lead to the similar result which were achieved in Marston before the analysis and feasibility of the solution in different stores. As it may be true that by reducing the operating hours may not have affect in downtown but it might have a major impact on sales in town or other store locations. Furthermore, it is also required to analysis the interest of customer at different stores. The main question which need a valid answer is whether the populace living near other stores are similar to the populace living near Marston. As it is said the store, Marston, is in downtime, the main high time for the store’s operation is before 6 pm but store in city may have high rush in the store between 6pm to 9pm as in cities most the customers are corporate people and buys after working hours. The nightlife of the store’s location may vary depending on the customers. The customer in Marston where able to adapt to the change in operating hours as time is not constrain for the people in Marston whereas in some other downtown stores people may not be able to go to store due to time constraint. If the answer to the question that the all stores have a rush time before 6 pm then reduction in operating expense may not be increase profit if the reason for the decline in profit is independent of the operating hours. Another question which need a justified answer is that whether the interest of the people in all stores are alike, if not then the elimination of all movies released more than five years ago can not only help in increase of profit but may lead to decline in the profit for the stores. The customer of the store where the recommendation has been executed are more interested in the movies which are latest but it might be a possibility that the interest of the customer at other store may be more incline towards old movies. Nonetheless, a particular area might have more sales owing to a specific movie genes which have been released before 5 years. If this can be verified from the records that the sale of movies released in last 5 years is greater than earlier, it may be the case that the main reason for the decline profit is not dependent on the stock at all. The recommendation has assumed that the reason for decline all 9 Movies Galore’s store is same as the one in Marston. Different stores can have different reason for the decline in profit. Operating hours and excessive store may not be a reason for decline in profit in other stores. There are many other factors needed to be considered. One integral factor is the quality of the product, may be the company to known for the great movies at cheap price but the quality of the movies is not satisfactory for the customer. Moreover, Quality is imperative then expense. Additionally, factor for decline in the profit is stock availability of a movies. Furthermore, location is an important factor. Nonetheless, the people are less interested in renting the movies than buying them. Moreover, the customers are more inclined towards the online rental where less equipment is required than cd or dvd of the movies. The recommendation can considered to be achieve the predicated result if all these questions are answered and it may be answered if we analyses the last records of sales in the stores individually and also feedback from the people in the area where store is located as well as of the customer will help to achieve the goal.
  2. The two views stated has been debated from a long time. Though some believes that corporations should focus on the main purpose of their existence, while other believes that they should not only have economic impact but also social impact on populace. Nonetheless, the company have responsibilities towards the company and the profit they are determined to concoct. Yet the steadfast toward the society and environment cannot be neglected. More than 60% people earn their income from corporate sector, if such abound people are only focused on gaining money then the wellbeing of society and environment will be difficult to maintain. Little effects from corporations can lead to a drastic change in the environment and society. Let exemplify, if suppose textile companies, working according to the law, drain out dirty water into the river. They are having huge profit but they are damaging the environment. If a little effort of making sure that the river is cleaned from time to time, can make remarkable difference. Corporation have responsibility to make sure that the society that they are working in is not harmed in any way. This can lead to not only adverse effects on the people around them but also the people working for the corporation. Furthermore, most of the people result in having mental issue after having working only for the money. Being social, doing something good for the society increase the moral of the people working in the company. They have a relaxation which helps in better performance of people. Many corporations like google, Facebook, dell etc. have taken initiative to work towards the society and environment by launching programs where people donate their clothes for the need ones, cleaning campaigns to work on the nearby peoples to have a clean environment to work in. To extrapolate, corporation being an integral part of the society have a responsibility to make environment and society a better place to work.
  3. The best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. Positive and negative aspects are two sides of coin. It is never a good practice to focus on one side and neglect the other sides. Teaching is the basic fundamental of our life. Negligence is the foundation of the life’s study cannot be accepted. As a result, it is never a best way to teach by praising for positive actions and ignoring the negative ones. Teaching, means to learn from our actions and we cannot ignore the actions which are not right as there are the most imperative learning of our life. Let’s exemplify, if you have cooked a dish which is cooked perfectly but the salt is in excess. You can never ignore the fact that the next time you have to decrease the quantity of salt. Ignorance is bliss. Learning from the mistakes make a recipe perfect. Negative result are as integral as the positive result to learn for the future. As praise for the good indeed motivates us but only praise won’t push the person to learn from it. Before the invention of the blub, Thomas Edison failed thousands of times. If he had ignored the failure and would have settled with a short achievement, we would never have lights in our home. Furthermore, he said the failure taught him 3000 things that cannot be used in the light bulb. As a result learning from the hard way is the best way. Teaching is the most pristine and difficult jobs of all. As we don’t have to make the person learn it but remember it for rest of the life and sometimes abrasive punishment teaches us the most imperative lesson of the life. The great warrior always learnt from the failure and from the deaths of their dear one, the lessons of their life. Teaching can never ignore any side of the result whether positive or negative. The best way to teach is to go hand in hand with praising for good actions and learning from the negative ones. Neither of the two aspects can be ignored in life. The following appeared in an article written by Dr. Karp, an anthropologist. “Twenty years ago, Dr. Field, a noted anthropologist, visited the island of Tertia and concluded from his observations that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by their own biological parents. However, my recent interviews with children living in the group of islands that includes Tertia show that these children spend much more time talking about their biological parents than about other adults in the village. This research of mine proves that Dr. Field's conclusion about Tertian village culture is invalid and thus that the observation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid as well. The interview-centered method that my team of graduate students is currently using in Tertia will establish a much more accurate understanding of child-rearing traditions there and in other island cultures.” Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. The following argument is flawed for numerous reasons. Primarily, the argument is based on the assumption that time doesn’t play any role the research. Furthermore, it is also considered that the rearing and talking about parents is equivalent. Thus making the weak argument that Tertian village culture as well as the observation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid. The argument is mainly invalid owing to the reason that it doesn’t considered the fact that Dr. Field’s research was carried out twenty years ago. As the time changes the tradition also changes in the villages. The children who were observed by Dr Field are now adults and hence may be they were reared by the whole village but as the two decades have passed the parents are more protective towards the children and therefore tertian village culture is obsoleted. Dr Karp should have also interviewed the adults who were children at the time Dr Field study was executed. Though this would have given a much strong reason to extrapolate that the Tertain village culture was invalid yet this argument this fails to validate that the observation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid. The argument also fails to give strong evidence that the children of Tertain are not reared by the whole village. The argument that the talk more about their biological parents only give any strong proof that they are reared by their biological parents. May be the children are not good in communicating or maybe they are repeating the things that the children of the other islands are answering. This can also be considered that they are reared by the whole village but they have more affection towards their parents. As a result, we can say that besides interviewing the children, observing the children’s lifestyle is an integral aspect to validate that Tertain village culture is not practiced. Therefore concluding that interview based approach is better approach that observation centered is inaccurate. As the argument has left many unanswered question as well as many factors has been ignored in the argument. Thus it fails to make convincing case that interview based approach is much more accurate understanding of child-rearing traditions.
