  1. Not to read tea leaves, but I wonder if their priority in looking at TAPS apps with the e-mail we received on Jan 3 saying we should hear "by the middle of Feb" means results will come a bit later this year than in previous yrs. everyone's semester off to a good start? if you're still in school?
  2. Anxiously waiting for uchicago decisions...my top choice
  3. I've got a long break so I'm making piano music. In progress on 2 sonatas and a collection of smaller pieces. Also practicing stuff for senior solo piano recital (which will include one of my own pieces??) I'm worried Eastman's silence so far means a rejection for me. Surely if they were planning to interview me on Jan 22 they would have notified me earlier.
  4. 12 months ago I was planning to apply to comp programs but had a change of heart (and also realized I'd probably have to do an unfunded MM before a funded PhD/DMA)
  5. wow looks like there are 2 of us with Stockhausen compositions as profile names on here ???
  6. Based on previous years' threads on here it does not seem UChicago interviews applicants. I am interested broadly in 20th-century Russian/Soviet music though so far, I have focused on analyzing 1910s Russian piano music from both historical and music theoretic points of views. Actually, I was also looking primarily for programs that integrate history and theory (and composition and performance ?), and no better place for that than Chicago!. My theory background is also weak but I've spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with analytical approaches germane to my research. I imagine you're familiar with Robert Doran at Eastman?
  7. Hey good luck. AFAIK it seems UChicago in past years releases results towards end of Jan so we can expect to hear soon. If you wouldnt mind sharing, what kind of topics are you interested in researching?
  8. Oh yeah sure thing! Forgot that page existed tbh I use this page for the forums mostly.
  9. Damn, I applied to both Theory and Musicology at Eastman. I emailed them this morning asking if they'd update my CV that shows ive been recently invited to present my writing sample at a theory conference...oh well. I've got an interview at Indiana theory though in Jan.
  10. Anyone heard back from Eastman music theory/musicology about an interview?
  11. Done with all the apps! What's going on with you guys? Im excited
  12. In fact, I think GSAS would be more interested in that background than the earlier things you mention (though by all means talk about those too). I would imagine this is a unique background among those applying to grad school, so it would definitely make you a more "diverse" candidate. I would recommend not focusing too much on the little details, you will want to discuss more the bigger picture--how your experience living in a huge working-class household affected your ability to succeed, informed your decision to pursue grad school, your research interests. Don't excise all the humor from it, but be frank and direct about it, and I am sure it will come across appropriately. I just submitted my app to NYU GSAS. For my personal statement I included about one page single-spaced that just mentions a few things I thought were important. In any case, I've read everywhere the personal statement can only help you. Good luck!
  13. Thanks for the reassurance. It looks like most of the schools I applied to allowed me to upload an updated version--so I did that, but I suspect in most cases the reader will gloss over this particular error.
  14. Hello, In my statement of purpose to which I've already submitted to 9 schools I have forgot to place an "a" before a noun where it is needed. Am I doomed?
  15. anyone else applying to UCB musicology wanna exchange personal statements
  16. Sorry I misunderstood the question, I did not think op was talking about plagiarization of research in a SOP, and I am not even sure how/why that could be done, but maybe there's something about history sops I don't know about. I thought op was worried about phrasing / syntax similarities with other sops. Should have read closer.
  17. I doubt they would check for plagiarism, they've got enough work as is. Just don't be egregious and you'll be fine.
