  1. What are some things you wish you knew before starting graduate school? What would you go back and tell yourself? Any tips? Best way to prepare? I start graduate school this fall Thanks so much!
  2. This means a lot and I'm glad to know that you were happy with your decision. I just have to make the most of the experience because it truly is once in a lifetime! Thank you so much for your reply! ❤️
  3. You are totally right. If we want this career it is the choice that we have to make and I just have to remember it's temporary and it'll be worth it. Thank you so much
  4. I recently found out that I was accepted into graduate school out of state. I am extremely happy, blessed, and grateful for this opportunity as my stats were on the low end and I did not think I would get in anywhere the first time applying. This is what I have dreamt about for so long, and I want everyone to know that if it is possible for me, then it is definitely possible for you as well! ❤️ That being said, following acceptance, I think it's natural to have some nerves. I've only ever lived at home and I've never been out-of state. I'm so excited for this new experience but at the same time I feel like I may fall into a depression and get extremely homesick. I'm a little worried about balancing a whole new environment while at the same time making sure I'm staying on top of my academics. I know people move for school all the time and this is what I try to remind myself. I just get a little sad thinking about being away from the comfort of home. Anyone in the same boat?
  5. Update: I was also placed on the wait-list for a 3rd school! Of these 3, I recently found out that I was accepted into 1!!! I'M GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL!!!!!
  6. I also sent follow-up emails and I received responses basically thanking me for my continued interest and wishing me the best of luck in the process. I definitely think it's a good idea.
  7. For those who have been wait-listed, how are you doing? I applied to 8 schools. I was rejected from 4, currently on the wait-list for 2, and still waiting to hear from two others. This waiting game has been so hard for me. I thought I would make a post for all those wait-listed to express their feelings and to share their victory if they get off the wait-list. We are in this together! And for those who were accepted off the wait-list in the past, feel free to share your experience and give the rest of us hope!
  8. Hi all! I recently took the GRE and I received a 146V, 134Q (I know, super embarrassing), and I’m still waiting on the writing score. My GPA overall is a 3.21. I unfortunately don’t have time to re-take the GRE. Do I still have a chance of getting in? I’m planning on applying everywhere, I have volunteer experience, pre-school teaching experience, and SLPA experience for about a year. I’m also bilingual. Your opinions are appreciated!

  10. I just graduated with my bachelor’s degree with a 3.2 GPA and a 3.0 in my major. I realize that these are not good stats at all with how competitive grad school is. I’m going to be waiting at least a year before I try to apply to grad school and in that time I will be working as an SLPA. I also have experience working as an assistant teacher at a preschool, and some volunteer and intern hours. I was not close with my professors in my undergrad.. What else do you think will give me the best chance of getting in? What can I do to stand out? Re-taking classes would be ideal but difficult due to the fact that I already graduated and it is costly. I have yet to take the GRE so that might help. But If anyone has any tips for me and if it is even possible for me to get into grad school please let me know. I love this field and although staying as an SLPA might not be bad I know I will crave more.
  11. It’s unfortunate to say, but I never got too close to my professors during my undergrad. I know that if I asked them for letters of recommendations, they probably wouldn’t be the strongest. But I will be working as an SLPA and I’m sure I can get solid letters from SLP’s and supervisors. What I’m trying to say is, do grad schools have to see academic recommendations for you to get accepted? Or would I be better off sticking with strong letters from those outside my schooling. Let me know of your opinions and experiences on this
  12. I am starting an internship program soon that prepares me to be an SLPA. It’ll be my first time doing real hands on work within the field. I will be doing it at a pediatric therapy clinic and while I’m excited, I am also very nervous as I know I will be planning sessions, writing SOAP notes, collecting data, etc. It’ll be my first time working with clients and I’m worried I won’t know what the heck I’m doing. I’ve never planned therapy before or managed a caseload and every child is so different. Any tips would be much appreciated!
  13. I am graduating with my bachelor's in communication disorders this December. I am currently pursuing SLPA certification and my plan is to work as an SLPA until I get into graduate school. I'm nervous that my experience will not be enough to stand out in a grad school application. I have plenty of experience working with children. I've worked at an elementary school, 2 years at a preschool, and I volunteered at a pediatric therapy clinic, but I feel like I need more. I saw job postings to be an early intervention habilitation provider and I feel that it would look amazing on my application, but I am not sure how I would be able to fit this into my schedule if I also want to work as an SLPA. Any advice? Which is better? Will my SLPA job be enough? Thank you!! P.S. My GPA isn't great (probably ending with 3.2, about 3.0 in major), which is why I want my experience to make up for it. I also have not taken the GRE yet, but obviously hoping to get high scores on that. Thank you, everyone!
  14. I would like to know other’s stats/stories of those who had low GPA’s and how they got accepted into graduate school. Hopefully it can show not only me, but others who are also losing hope that there is always a chance of getting in!
  15. So, here's my situation. I have one semester left of my undergrad and then I will likely graduate with a 3.2 gpa. (Not great, I know). I do have the chance to stay another semester to try and boost my GPA, although at this point I'm just ready to graduate. I don't plan on going to grad school right away, I plan on working as an SLPA for awhile to gain some hands on experience within the field. Do you think I have a chance at getting into grad school? I have also volunteered at a speech clinic, and plan to shadow/observe more. I have also worked at a preschool for 2 years now, and have had plenty of experience with children so I'm hoping that helps as well? Thoughts?? This is my very first post on GradCafe!!
