  1. Turned down my Kansas offer—hope that helps somebody out there!
  2. Just turned down an offer from Florida State’s PhD program and plan on turning down offers later today from UNC-Greensboro and University of Florida that both include fellowships. I hope this helps someone!
  3. I was one of the Florida acceptances! Don’t know if they’re done notifying or if they’ve sent out waitlist emails yet, but I got an email from the DGS saying my offer letter was in the mail. Good luck to you!!
  4. I was accepted to Florida State on Wednesday (received an email inviting me to the open house) but I’ve heard nothing from Florida! Hope that helps!

  6. Wow, that’s such a relief! I’m having to remind myself “you’re already accepted, this isn’t an interview” over and over again. Most of my anxiety does come from the fear that I’ll be incredibly awkward and have nothing to say, so this makes me feel a lot better about it. I hope it’ll be a good call, because I truly am excited about the program and about being in communication with a scholar who’s done such great work in my field. Thank you for the validation!!
  7. @Sav thank you so much!! There are definitely some questions I have about the program in general (and I’d love to get some info about the area too), but I didn’t know if those would be appropriate in this situation—so this makes me feel so much better. *deep breath in, deep breath out*
  8. So I have a question. Yesterday one of my POIs from a program I’ve been accepted to emailed me to set up a phone call for tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone knew what I should generally be expecting from this call or had any advice in terms of talking points/questions to have ready ahead of time (he did mention that he would be glad to answer any questions I might have). I get very anxious about speaking to people over the phone, so I’m trying to be as prepared as possible! Thanks in advance!

  10. It feels like I’ve been through the emotional ringer already, yet I’ve only heard from 3 schools. How on earth am I supposed to survive the rest of this process??
  11. I feel you on the small size thing—that’s definitely nice. Good luck to you too!! I’ll definitely keep you posted!
  12. @CatBowl congrats to you too!! I applied to 10 programs total. I’ve been accepted to UNCG and Illinois so far and gotten implied rejections from Colorado and Chicago, but there’s still such a long way to go waiting for the other schools—UGH. I genuinely have no idea whether or not I’ll end up at UNCG. I applied there specifically because of Scott Romine, so working with him would definitely be hard to pass up. But Illinois is a really great school and I have no idea if I’ll get in somewhere else (I’ve also applied to Michigan, Penn, Kansas, LSU, Florida State, and Florida), so I’m already overwhelmed. I’m totally with you on wishing I could just have all the info and be able to decide! But I’ll definitely be visiting UNCG at some point—maybe even this month if I can swing it!
  13. I have! I’m focusing on 20th century American lit with an emphasis in southern studies and African American literature. Was very excited about the acceptance as well!
  14. I’m not sure about making that visit time either, but I’ll definitely schedule something in March if I can! My focus period is 20th-century American with an emphasis in African American literature and Southern studies. I was wondering the same thing about the fellowship—I got it too, and also got the vibe that it was pretty common. Maybe it’s their standard offer? Either way, I’m absolutely ecstatic!!
  15. Hi! I’m a lurker but just wanted to say that I’m also in at Illinois for the PhD! I’m so so excited!
