How are people feeling? I hope the people who got rejected aren't too depressed. Now that I"m finishing up my Masters, I see that getting rejected isn't all a bad thing in every case. For me, if I get rejected from my final place, that will give me time to define my projects much more, and look at more programs and contact people, and find somewhere that will be a better fit. I know some of us are just trying to get the degree, and we are dealing with job insecurity and stuff. But I just wanted to throw that out there... and also trying to remind myself! I just saw someone say they're glad they were rejected bc it allowed them to refine their approach and they ended up getting into a top school. Personally I know my app wasn't what it could be, so I'm trying to see it as an opportunity... xx

still trying to build up the motivation to apply again...i know for sure my biggest weak point on my apps was my gre scores..so i'm not sure if i should give that another try since i already took it 3 times and improved each time yet my score still sucked...any prep program recommendations are highed needed right now

I think it really depends on what aspect of media studies you’re interested in. I have a psychology and anthropology degree, but am also a film school grad. I’m interested in media effects on children, race, identity, and underrepresentation and have been accepted into communication programs with a media psychology focus. Depending on your interests, communication, English, sociology, psychology, history, are all good backgrounds. Research experience is also really helpful. I think a really defined interest is also important, the more clear you are on what your research interest and approach is, the better chance you have if you come from an area that doesn’t tie so closely to media studies. That and finding a POI who is currently researching what you’re interested in.

    Thank you for that info

  3. Hey I was wondering what creditials are needed for most media studies phd applicants? Do programs typically care if you have media industry experience (I.e. news/tv/magazine)? Or are they more concerned with research experience and test scores. This particular major has been so difficult to find information on even when reaching out to faculty and current students at universities.

Oh wow I'm in philosophy and I got two rejections between Friday and Sunday. It was brutal. Yale woke up early and started rejecting people today too. Probably just different departments doing different things.

Honestly I'm in a state of "just kill me now and give me a quick and merciful death" with these decisions at this point.

Lol my thoughts exactly....waking and seeing all those damn rejections is killing my anxiety. they need to hurry up and let us know already for every department...I wish they would just get a standard decision notification date for all departments like they do with the deadlines to submit applications when we applying

Yes!! I'm hoping we hear from Yale next Friday too. And yes, let's hope for a nice, big class!! It's good to have company while I wait!

Looking st the past results for American studies and a few others I see they also released results on Saturdays and sundays so it could possible post this weekend too...fingers crossed and hoping for positive results for all of us

Glad to read these updates! It's comforting to have a little bit more insight! I've learned from a Dean at Yale that their Recruitment/Admit overnight is March 24-25. But doesn't look like anyone has received word of admission yet.

I guess we all have to wait until next Friday to hear back...hopefully they admit a lot of people in the program like they did with the history program last week, so we can all have a better chance...good luck everybody!!!

Right there with you! Really curious as to what's going on with Yale right now, from past years, the ways in which applicants are notified seem pretty inconsistent!

Looking at the past years it seems like American and African studies released notification between Wednesday’s the second week in February until the Friday of the third week in February..so I’m guessing we should all know more than likely by Friday this week hopefully...

I’m confused...I don’t see any results posted for yale amst this year yet?

I saw some posted for a bunch of masters program applicants and literature/biology  PhD applicants last week and this week ...however I’m not sure if those literature and biology PhD applicants who posted their results this week were invited to that little webinar.

  9.  Has anyone who received the invite for the Yale webinar last week received an update notification regarding their application status yet stating whether they were rejected or acceptanced at this point? I’m just curious since I see some people who didn’t mention the invite have already already posted their results.

just FYI here’s a piece of info copied from an email by Yale:

Notification of the admission committee's preliminary decisions, which will include both interview invitations as well as regrets, will be sent at the close of business on Friday, February 1st, 2019 for all four programs.

    So 5pm and fingers crossed!!!

Is this for the masters programs only or both masters/phd?

hmm yea. he made a point of saying that attending the webinar does not influence your decision. and it seems like it would be so much work for departments to give the graduate school a short list of maybe's, just so they could invite them to a webinar.

I don't want to read too much into it and get my hopes up haha. but the low number of people did kinda throw me off.

yeah im trying so hard not to get my hopes up...i hope they sent out notification on feb 1st so we all know where we stand early...i looked back at the results page on here and see most people in previous years recieved notification between feb 1st and feb 15th in most cases.

Not sure what the yale webinar is about. I have a friend in the american studies program there and he doesn't recall attending such a webinar nor is that something that he's heard they've been doing the past couple of years. What did they discuss in the webinar?

they mainly just discussed what factors to consider when accepting offers such as funding, location and poi's

did anyone else end up attending the yale webinar?? I was expecting a lot more people, but there was only 100 participants...which makes me wonder if maybe there were only a select few people invited...? maybe I'm just trying to get my hopes up lol

yeah i was in the webinar. it still has me wondering why only a particular set of people received the invite and attended. i know some of the other webinars have had close to 200 attendees or more.

Did anyone else get that email from Yale office of diversity and almost poop themselves? Can't tell if they sent this to all applicants or only those that are "diverse" (i'm latina).

LOL yes i recieved that email and was so nervous when i went to open it since i thought it was a decision email. I'm african american so i'm not sure if thats why i received an email or if they sent it out to everyone who has attended one of their past webinar sessions

  15. Hello,

I’m currently in the process of applying for PhD programs. I’ve been reaching out to professors that I’m interesting in having as my advisor during the programs. However, I’m noticing the majority of them don’t have time to respond back through email or even meet me in personal to discuss the program.

So my question is how important is it to meet/talk to the potential person you want to advise you before submitting your application? Can it negatively affect you if you choose someone that you never actually spoke to before or do majority of applicants get accepted without actually expressing interest in the program to potential advisors?

  16. What inspired your research agenda topic for you dissertations? I'm currently applying for a Phd programs and just curious to about how most people decide on a precise area or topic to focus on during their Phd matriculation. Do most people know the topics they want to explore during the application process or do most people narrow down their ideas after the first year in the program?
